This book provides a snapshot of the state-of-the art in the study of mammalian cell nuclear architecture, and features a diverse range of chapters written by top researchers. A key aspect is an emphasis on precise and repeatable quantitative analysis and simulation in addition to the more familiar biological perspective. The fusion of such material frames the future of the discipline. Quantitative contributions stress reproducible and robust 3D analysis, using a variety of tools ranging from point pattern analysis to shape registration methods. Biological insights include the role of nuclear subdomains in cancer, nuclear molecular motors, and a holistic view of gene transcription.

The general theme of the Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) Symposia is the - telligent use of computers in complex data analysis problems. The ?eld has matured su?ciently that some re-considerationof our objectives was required in order to retain the distinctiveness of IDA. Thus, in addition to the more tra- tional algorithm- and application-oriented submissions, we sought submissions that speci?cally focus on aspects of the data analysis process. For example, - teractive tools to guide and support data analysis in complex scenarios. With the increasingavailabilityofautomaticallycollecteddata,toolsthatintelligently support and assist human analysts are becoming important. IDA-09, the 8th International Symposium on Intelligent Data Analysis, took place in Lyon from August 31 to September 2, 2009. The invited speakers were PaulCohen(UniversityofArizona,USA)andPabloJensen(ENSLyon,France). The meeting received more than 80 submissions. The Programme Committee selected 33 submissions for publication: 18 for full oral presentation, and 15 for poster and short oralpresentation. Eachcontribution was evaluated by three expertsandhas beenallocated12pagesintheproceedings.Theacceptedpapers cover a broad range of topics and applications, and include contributions on the re? ned focus of IDA.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of an international workshop on Pattern Detection and Discovery organized by the European Science Foundation in London, UK in September 2002.The 17 revised full papers presented were carefully selected and reviewed for inclusion in this state-of-the-art book. Cell biology is a rapidly advancing subject. Understanding principles of nuclear architecture is a key question. Researchers are starting to develop more strict and rigorous methods of image processing and quantitative analysis to provide an end-to-end process supporting the fundamental biology.

This book has chapters contributed by experts in the field that address the whole endeavour of teasing out the principles of nuclear architecture: ranging from fundamental science, through imaging processing and quantitative analysis, to applications, related to disease. This material is focussed on the latest breakthroughs, and moreover will emphasise a strict and rigorous development of the scientific process. A systems view is stressed where relevant. The objective is not to provide an encyclopaedic compendium of nuclear architecture information, but rather to present state of the art tools in specific contexts, which will readily generalise.

The background to IDA 2010, the 9th International Symposium on Intelligent DataAnalysis(IDA), is ratherunusual. Previously, thesymposiawereheldbi- nially at European venues. Over this time, the IDA Symposium had established an identity, a dedicated group of Program Committee members, and a regular audience. However, this success had come at a cost to the original ambitions for the symposium - concerned with interfacing AI, statistics and computer science for important and di?cult real-world data analysis problems - being comp- mised in favor of more standard data mining content. IDA 2010 was organized explicitly to re-align the IDA Symposia series with a set of objectives evolved from the original ambitions. This should be construed not as a criticism of r- tine data mining research but rather as an admission that the IDA symposium had taken the path of least resistance with respect to the call for papers and the reviewing process. This is the proceedings volume of IDA 2010, a special event held only a year after the eighth symposium in an attempt to revitalize the area of IDA. There were two major changes compared to previous symposia. First, the Call for - pers (CfP) was completely rewritten, placing great emphasis on algorithms and systems thatsupportmodelling andanalysisofcomplex real-worldsystems. - reover, the CfP explicitly discouraged submissions that might be characterized as "incrementaladvances indata mining algorithms. "Second, the reviewing- chanism was extended to include a "senior ProgrammeCommittee," in response to perceived shortcomings in the existing reviewing process.

Cyber-security is a matter of rapidly growing importance in industry and government. This book provides insight into a range of data science techniques for addressing these pressing concerns.The application of statistical and broader data science techniques provides an exciting growth area in the design of cyber defences. There is increasing pressure to protect computer networks against unauthorized intrusion, and some work in this area is concerned with engineering systems that are robust to attack. However, no system can be made invulnerable. Data Analysis for Network Cyber-Security focuses on monitoring and analyzing network traffic data, with the intention of preventing, or quickly identifying, malicious activity. Such work involves the intersection of statistics, data mining and computer science. Fundamentally, network traffic is relational, embodying a link between devices. As such, graph analysis approaches are a natural candidate. However, such methods do not scale well to the demands of real problems, and the critical aspect of the timing of communications events is not accounted for in these approaches. This book gathers papers from leading researchers to provide both background to the problems and a description of cutting-edge methodology. The contributors are from diverse institutions and areas of expertise and were brought together at a workshop held at the University of Bristol in March 2013 to address the issues of network cyber security.The workshop was supported by the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research.
