This text is an introduction to the spectral theory of the Laplacian on compact or finite area hyperbolic surfaces. For some of these surfaces, called "arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces", the eigenfunctions are of arithmetic nature, and one may use analytic tools as well as powerful methods in number theory to study them. After an introduction to the hyperbolic geometry of surfaces, with a special emphasis on those of arithmetic type, and then an introduction to spectral analytic methods on the Laplace operator on these surfaces, the author develops the analogy between geometry (closed geodesics) and arithmetic (prime numbers) in proving the Selberg trace formula. Along with important number theoretic applications, the author exhibits applications of these tools to the spectral statistics of the Laplacian and the quantum unique ergodicity property. The latter refers to the arithmetic quantum unique ergodicity theorem, recently proved by Elon Lindenstrauss. The fruit of several graduate level courses at Orsay and Jussieu, The Spectrum of Hyperbolic Surfaces allows the reader to review an array of classical results and then to be led towards very active areas in modern mathematics.

Cet ouvrage est une introduction la th orie spectrale du laplacien sur les surfaces hyperboliques (de courbure 1), compactes ou d'aire finie. Pour certaines de ces surfaces, dites surfaces hyperboliques arithm tiques, les fonctions propres sont des objets de nature arithm tique et des outils d'analyse sont employ s conjointement des m thodes puissantes de th orie des nombres pour les tudier. Apr s une introduction la g om trie hyperbolique des surfaces insistant sur celles qui sont arithm tiques, puis une introduction aux m thodes d'analyse spectrale de l'op rateur de Laplace sur celles- ci, l'auteur d veloppe l'analogie g om trie (g od siques ferm es) - arithm tique (nombres premiers) en d montrant la formule des traces de Selberg. Outre des applications importantes l'arithm tique, l'auteur propose des applications la statistique spectrale de l'op rateur de Laplace et la propri t d'unique ergodicit quantique (th or me d'unique ergodicit quantique arithm tique, r cemment d montr par Elon Lindenstrauss). L'ouvrage, issu de plusieurs cours de M2 Orsay et l'Universit P. & M. Curie, permet au lecteur de parcourir un champ math matique classique et d' tre conduit vers des domaines de recherche tr s actifs.
