A one-stop Desk Reference, for engineers involved in the use of
engineered materials across engineering and electronics; this is a
book that will not gather dust on the shelf. It brings together the
essential professional reference content from leading international
contributors in the field. Material ranges from basic to advanced
topics including materials and process selection; and explanations
of properties of metals, ceramics, plastics and composites
* A hard-working desk reference, providing all the essential
material needed by engineers on a day-to-day basis
* Fundamentals, key techniques, engineering best practice and
rules-of-thumb together in one quick-reference sourcebook
* Definitive content by the leading authors in the field, including
Michael Ashby, Robert Messler, Rajiv Asthana and R J Crawford
Plastics: Microstructure and Applications is a key text for senior
students studying the science and engineering of plastics materials
(or polymers) and will serve as a valuable introduction to the
fundamentals of polymer properties for those new to the field.
Starting from microstructure and physical properties, the book
covers the mechanical, chemical, transport and electrical
properties of plastics materials and also deals in detail with
wider issues that today's engineers and materials scientists need,
such as manufacturing processes and the design of plastics
products. A thorough revision of the book for this 4th edition
reflects advances in the field by including more detailed
discussion of characterization techniques, crystallization and
molecular structure, thermoplastic composites, 3D printing and
electrical properties of plastics. The chapter on materials and
shape selection covers sustainability, life cycle analysis and
waste disposal considerations for plastics materials.
Explores the issues and the use of best practice interpretation
principles in bringing the Roman world to life for visitors and
educational users. Issues in the public presentation and
interpretation of the archaeology of Hadrian's Wall and other
frontiers of the Roman Empire are explored and addressed here. A
central theme is the need for interpretation to be people-focussed,
and for visitors to be engaged through narratives and approaches
which help them connect with figures in the past: daily life,
relationships, craft skills, communications, resonances with modern
frontiers and modern issues allprovide means of helping an audience
to connect, delivering a greater understanding, better visitor
experiences, increased visiting and spend, and an enhanced
awareness of the need to protect and conserve our heritage. Topics
covered include re-enactment, virtual and physical reconstruction,
multi-media, smartphones, interpretation planning and design; while
new evidence from audience research is also presented to show how
visitors respond to different strategies of engagement. Nigel Mills
is Director, World Heritage and Access, The Hadrian's Wall Trust.

The early days of motoring, together with the first motor sport
events, are largely forgotten today. In order to breathe new life
into that era and to link the historical events described, the
central characters in this book are fictitious creations. The parts
they enact in the story though are those of the real people who
participated in the actual events that have all been carefully
researched. The main events covered are the 1895
Paris-Bordeaux-Paris race, the 1896 Paris-Marseilles-Paris race,
the Tunbridge Wells Show and the activities of Harry Lawson. The
author believes that by taking these few liberties with a few names
and by using the artifice of fictional linking, he is able to
introduce a wider audience to the history being enacted on those
quiet open roads at the dawn of motoring. Levassor's epic two day
drive, the city to city races and other events described here are
some of the most momentous motoring achievements to have ever taken
place. 36 Illustrations
This book has been written to help people with Multiple Sclerosis
(MS) improve their physical and psychological functioning using the
Chinese system of movement and meditation known as Qigong, closely
related to Tai Chi. Qigong focuses on the important basic
principles of balance, body alignment and energy flow without the
need to learn the complex patterns of Tai Chi. People with MS often
experience impaired balance, difficulties in walking, tremor, low
energy levels, and anxiety. Qigong can be used to improve their
day-to-day wellbeing. The program described in this book was
developed in a hospital setting and rigorously evaluated, and is
cited by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence. Most of the
participants reported specific improvements on many dimensions. The
author provides a step-by-step guide, with photographs and clear
text, to show how people with MS can improve their health and
quality of life using Qigong. Many of the exercises can be done
either seated or standing, and are suitable for anyone, regardless
of their level of ability. He explains how to use Qigong to improve
balance and walking, and promote healthy breathing and relaxation.
He also explores the role of stress in triggering relapses in MS,
and an approach designed to help people with MS overcome previous
traumatic events, manage stress, and reduce the likelihood of
further relapses is included. This practical book will help people
with MS to find achievable ways to improve their lives. It will
also be of great interest to carers, teachers of Tai Chi or Qigong,
physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses and complementary
therapists.
