Early childhood care and education (0-4): A transdisciplinary approach takes a holistic approach to early childhood development (ECD) by integrating knowledge from various disciplines, such as education, social sciences, health sciences, and the creative arts. The large and diverse author team comprises 31 contributors from 15 higher education institutions, spanning a variety of different disciplines, enriching the book with a nuanced range of expertise. The transdisciplinary framework adopted in the text equips students with an integrated understanding of the development of the child and prepares educators and those who work in various fields of ECD to collaborate with a range of professionals and stakeholders in order to offer the best support for the young child. Though specifically aimed at degrees in Education (ECCE birth to four focus), including the Bachelor of Education in ECCE and the Diploma in ECCE, the book can also be used across disciplines for relevant modules in social work, nursing sciences, psychology, and related subjects. The book is also aimed at early childhood development practitioners and at staff in community-based organisations, private pre-primary schools, training colleges and in the National Development Agency and the Departments of Education, Health, and Social Development. It may be used as a practical workbook by all involved in ECD as part of short learning programmes in ECD.
This book is designed for English First Additional language student teachers and in-service teachers. It addresses EFAL teaching in both urban and rural contexts. Practical examples with case studies are used to portray issues that reflect the everyday challenges teachers meet in mediating learning and making sure that learners use English proficiently. Issues deemed important for facilitating English as First Additional Language are covered, such as the importance of mother tongue in learning a second language, theories of second language development and acquisition and methodologies for teaching First Additional Language. Student teachers and practicing teachers can explore examples of trialled approaches on how to introduce English to contexts where the teacher is the only source of the language, as the learners don’t encounter the language in their daily lives.
