Idealism after Existentialism - Encounters in Philosophy of Religion (Hardcover): N. N. Trakakis Idealism after Existentialism - Encounters in Philosophy of Religion (Hardcover)
N. N. Trakakis
R1,542 Discovery Miles 15 420 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

A century ago the dominant philosophical outlook was not some form of materialism or naturalism, but idealism. However, this way of thinking about reality fell out of favour in the Anglo-American analytic tradition as well as the Continental schools of the twentieth century. The aim of this book is to restage and reassess the encounter between idealism and contemporary philosophy. The idealist side will be represented by the great figures of the 19th-century post-Kantian tradition in Germany, from Fichte and Schelling to Hegel, followed by the towering Hegelians in Britain led by T.H. Green, F.H. Bradley and Bernard Bosanquet. Their 20th-century adversaries will be represented by the secular existentialists, especially the famous French trio of Sartre, Beauvoir and Camus, who sought to follow Nietzsche in philosophizing in light of the death of God. And the arena of encounter will be the philosophy of religion-more specifically, questions relating to the nature and existence of God, death and the meaning of life, and the problem of evil. The book argues that the existentialist critique of idealism enables an innovative as well as a more critical and adventurous approach that is sorely needed in philosophy of religion today. Idealism after Existentialism will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working in the history of 19th- and 20th-century philosophy and philosophy of religion.

Medieval Philosophy of Religion - The History of Western Philosophy of Religion, Volume 2 (Paperback): Graham Oppy, N. N.... Medieval Philosophy of Religion - The History of Western Philosophy of Religion, Volume 2 (Paperback)
Graham Oppy, N. N. Trakakis
R1,301 Discovery Miles 13 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Medieval period was one of the richest eras for the philosophical study of religion. Covering the period from the 6th to the 16th century, reaching into the Renaissance, "The History of Western Philosophy of Religion 2" shows how Christian, Islamic and Jewish thinkers explicated and defended their religious faith in light of the philosophical traditions they inherited from the ancient Greeks and Romans. The enterprise of 'faith seeking understanding', as it was dubbed by the medievals themselves, emerges as a vibrant encounter between - and a complex synthesis of - the Platonic, Aristotelian and Hellenistic traditions of antiquity on the one hand, and the scholastic and monastic religious schools of the medieval West, on the other. "Medieval Philosophy of Religion" will be of interest to scholars and students of Philosophy, Medieval Studies, the History of Ideas, and Religion, while remaining accessible to any interested in the rich cultural heritage of medieval religious thought.

Life-Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Commercial Buildings - An Analysis for Green-Building Implementation Using A Green Star... Life-Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Commercial Buildings - An Analysis for Green-Building Implementation Using A Green Star Rating System (Hardcover)
Cuong N. N. Tran, Vivian W. Y. Tam, Khoa N Le
R4,731 Discovery Miles 47 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book develops a model to evaluate and assess life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions based on typical Australian commercial building design options. It also draws comparisons between some of the many green building rating tools that have been developed worldwide to support sustainable development. These include: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) by the Building Research Establishment, Comprehensive Assessment System for Building Environmental Efficiency (CASBEE) by the Japanese Sustainable Building Consortium, and Green Star Environmental Rating System by the Green Building Council of Australia. Life-cycle assessment (LCA), life-cycle energy consumption, and life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions form the three pillars of life-cycle studies, which have been used to evaluate environmental impacts of building construction. Assessment of the life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions of buildings is one of the significant obstacles in evaluating green building performance. This book explains the methodology for achieving points for the categories associated with reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the Australian Green Star rating system. The model for the assessment uses GaBi 8.7 platform along with Visual Basic in Microsoft Excel and shows the relationship between the building's energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions released during the lifetime of the building. The data gathered in the book also illustrates that the green building design and specifications are becoming more popular and are being increasingly utilized in Australia. This book is important reading for anyone interested in sustainable construction, green design and buildings and LCA tools.

Molly N.N. Lee, Hoe Yeong Loke, Chang Da Wan
R1,253 Discovery Miles 12 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume seeks to identify and explore the dynamics of global forces on the development of higher education in Asia, in particular, how neoliberalism has affected reforms on university governance and management in the region. It includes a set of country-specific studies on how various countries have responded to the dominant neoliberal ideology at the systemic, institutional, and process levels. The focus is on the relationship between the state and the universities, which is usually reflected in the degree of autonomy and accountability allowed in a particular higher education system. The selected countries are Cambodia, China, Indonesia, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand. Each case study examines the establishment of corporatised or autonomous universities in the country focusing on (i) the acts, reports, and/or policies that led to such a move as well as the rationales behind the move; (ii) the changes in the governance and organisational structure of the universities, highlighting the kinds of autonomy that the universities have; (iii) the new management strategies, techniques, and practices that have been introduced to the university including the internal and external quality assurance mechanisms, and (iv) some of the tensions, conflicts, and acts of resistance that may have emerged.

R5,054 Discovery Miles 50 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nitroalkenes have often been referred to as "synthetic chameleons" owing to their reactivity, synthetic utility and biological significance. In the last two decades, the reactivity of nitroalkenes as substrates in diverse catalytic asymmetric transformations has been of tremendous interest on account of the powerful abilities of the nitro group to coordinate and withdraw electrons, as well as its amenability to undergo a wide variety of synthetic transformations. Although numerous original articles and reviews have appeared in the literature, a monograph providing a comprehensive coverage of this topic was conspicuous by its absence. This book features: A systematic, up-to-date, in-depth and well-organized compilation, spread over 12 chapters, of various catalytic asymmetric reactions of nitroalkenes with diverse substrates reported to date A wide coverage of reactions such as Michael additions, Friedel-Crafts reactions, cycloadditions, asymmetric reductions, multicomponent and cascade reactions, as well as other miscellaneous reactions Various chiral organo, metal and even biocatalysts involved in the stereoselective synthesis of multifunctional adducts via catalytic asymmetric reactions of nitroalkenes Schemes and figures detailing all the reagents, reaction conditions and product profiles Mechanistic details, including transition state models, which will be useful for effective catalytic design This book will be an invaluable resource for those who are working in the area of asymmetric catalysis and synthetic methodologies.

Space Debris - Hazard Evaluation and Debris (Paperback): N.N. Smirnov Space Debris - Hazard Evaluation and Debris (Paperback)
N.N. Smirnov
R1,951 Discovery Miles 19 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When the first sputnik was launched and the space era began, few gave thought to the possible negative impact of putting satellites into orbit. In fact, man's space activity has led to the formation of a new media named "space debris," i.e. man-made objects and their fragments launched into space, currently inactive and no longer serving any useful purpose. Space Debris: Hazard Evaluation and Mitigation will appeal to readers unfamiliar with the issues, as well as experts and designers. It introduces concepts behind the problems of space ecology. The volume features actual data on the space debris environment; new mathematical models for space debris evolution, production and self-production; description of the existing software and concepts for shield design. The author also reviews methods of collision risk assessment, including the attitudes and inclinations of orbits, collision hazard evaluation and suggestions for preventative measures.

Social Work, Psychiatry and the Law - Second Edition (Paperback): N.N. Pringle, P.J. Thompson Social Work, Psychiatry and the Law - Second Edition (Paperback)
N.N. Pringle, P.J. Thompson
R1,081 Discovery Miles 10 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1999, this volume is a revision of an earlier edition, after which there has been a virtual transformation in the provision of mental health services, examining issues including disturbances in children and adolescents, severe and enduring mental illness, drugs, ethical issues and developing a psychotherapeutic approach to approved social work. Many asylums have been closed, community care has been introduced and law, policy and practice have necessitated institutional change although, at an operational level, resources and perceptions have not always kept pace with change, resulting in increased levels of stress and, sometimes, public tragedy. This revision attempts to reconsider these changes from a social work perspective, along with contributing to the debate on professional and interprofessional practice.

Interreligious Philosophical Dialogues (Paperback): Graham Oppy, N. N. Trakakis Interreligious Philosophical Dialogues (Paperback)
Graham Oppy, N. N. Trakakis
R3,297 Discovery Miles 32 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This set of volumes provides a unique approach to the philosophy of religion - a dialogical conversation embracing a wide range of religious faiths and spiritualities, both Western and Eastern, in all their multifarious diversity and concrete manifestations. Each volume stages a highly interactive, genuinely comparative and thoroughly cross-cultural dialogue involving leading scholars and philosophers of religion. Each scholar, as a representative of a particular faith-tradition, is invited to consider how they think the divine; how they believe they are related to it; and how divinity figures in their lived experience. These dialogues not only traverse the traditional terrain of Judeo-Christianity but also explore an array of religions from across the world, from Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism to traditions which are rarely (if ever) studied in contemporary philosophy of religion, such as Daoism, Shinto, Confucianism, and Native American spirituality. In bringing these groups together in meaningful and productive interaction, this set of volumes uncovers the rich and diverse cognitive and experiential dimensions of religious belief and practice.
