Double bill of film fantasies. 'Stardust' (2007) is an adventure
based on the bestselling graphic novel by Neil Gaiman and Charles
Vess. When a young man, Tristan (Charlie Cox), tries to win the
heart of his beautiful but cold object of his desire Victoria
(Sienna Miller) by going on a quest to retrieve a fallen star, his
journey takes him to a mysterious and forbidden land beyond the
walls of his village. On his odyssey, Tristan finds the star, which
has transformed into a striking girl called Yvaine (Claire Danes).
However, Tristan is not the only one seeking the star. A king
(Peter O'Toole)'s four sons - not to mention the ghosts of their
three dead brothers - all need the star as they vie for the throne.
Tristan must also overcome the evil witch, Lamia (Michelle
Pfeiffer), who needs the star to make her young again. As Tristan
battles to survive these threats, encountering a pirate named
Captain Shakespeare (Robert De Niro) and a shady trader named Ferdy
the Fence (Ricky Gervais) along the way, his quest changes. He must
now win the heart of the star for himself as he discovers the
meaning of true love. Neil Jordan directs the Irish drama 'Ondine'
(2009). Syracuse (Colin Farrell) is a poor fisherman whose life is
changed forever when he fishes a beautiful live woman (Alicja
Bachleda) out of the sea. His young daughter, Annie (Alison Barry),
is convinced that the mysterious beauty must be a mermaid. Theories
abound about the girl's origins as she transforms the lives of
Syracuse, Annie and the local townsfolk. Stephen Rea and Dervla
Kirwan co-star.

The works of Shakespeare have become staples of literature. They are
everywhere, from our early schooling to the lecture rooms of academia,
from classic theatre to modern adaptations on stage and screen. But how
well do we really know his plays?
In this witty, iconoclastic book, the bestselling author Fintan O'Toole
examines four of Shakespeare's most enduring tragedies: Hamlet,
Macbeth, Othello and King Lear. He shows how their tragic heroes have
been over-simplified and moulded to fit restrictive, conservative
values, and restores the true heart and spirit of the classics.

The Economy of Ireland (14th edition) takes a holistic examination
of the Irish Economy in light of events including the Celtic Tiger
boom, recession, recovery and a global pandemic. The textbook
considers the evolution of the Irish economy over time; the policy
priorities for a small regional economy in the eurozone; the role
of the state in policy making; taxation and regulatory policy; and
the challenge of sustainable development. This provides a framework
for analysing policy issues at a national level, including the
Irish labour market and migration, inequality and poverty, and the
care economy. The book then considers issues at a sectoral level,
from agriculture and trade to the education and health sectors.
Packed with the latest available data, contemporary examples and
analysis of topical issues, this is an ideal text for students
studying modules on Irish Economics.

Irish Book Award We Don't Know Ourselves is a very personal vision
of recent Irish history from the year of O'Toole's birth, 1958,
down to the present. Ireland has changed almost out of recognition
during those decades, and Fintan O'Toole's life coincides with that
arc of transformation. The book is a brilliant interweaving of
memories (though this is emphatically not a memoir) and engrossing
social and historical narrative. This was the era of Eamon de
Valera, Jack Lynch, Charles Haughey and John Charles McQuaid, of
sectarian civil war in the North and the Pope's triumphant visit in
1979, but also of those who began to speak out against the ruling
consensus - feminists, advocates for the rights of children, gay
men and women coming out of the shadows. We Don't Know Ourselves is
an essential book for anyone who wishes to understand modern
Ireland.

Much more than an archive, these are the vivid, still pertinent
voices and messages of the pioneers worldwide. The nineteen
articles chosen by the editors of Applied Theatre Research
represent key themes and elements from the early days of applied
theatre that are still – and indeed now more than ever –
relevant. They are all high-quality articles, some of which were
highly influential in their own time. All of them still have plenty
to say to today’s applied theatre, both in their own terms and
sometimes in terms of how their publication influenced the
development at the time of this still-expanding field, or refracted
it in ways that give us new insights with hindsight. They have been
arranged in sections according to some of the key themes – and
problematic issues – that were discovered, thought out and
sometimes stumbled across by the pioneer writers in the collection.
Each section is preceded by a critical editorial commentary on
those themes, besides thorough introductions to all the articles
and in some cases re-evaluations. The editors have added
substantial additional new material to the collection and in doing
so, bring their own applied theatre experience to bear on these
themes, as they raise general questions that are wide-ranging,
contemporary and urgent: from the vital and contested issues of
power, partnerships and the giving of voice through theatre to
applied theatre’s proactive response to COVID-19, to the need to
identify, take account of and address the needs of all stakeholders
in any applied theatre project. The articles are grouped in
six sections, covering areas such as diversity of geography,
community contexts, forms of applied theatre and organizational
factors that characterize applied theatre; the definition and
nature of applied theatre; how the best intentioned projects could
be compromised by any of the many opportunities for applied theatre
to go wrong; opportunities for change it can offer and the
incorporation of new media technologies, and ethnographic
performance, two factors that have now become major preoccupations
for our field, particularly in the years since the articles were
written. The final section recognizes that applied theatre has been
around not for 30 years, but for thousands, and in countless
cultures. The editorial chapters have strong connections with the
rest of the book, but are written with the editors’ deep insights
into the field, and are sharp in their focus and context. The book
offers useful insights into the start of applied theatre and its
development as an area of practice and research. The chapter
collection is relevant and includes influential names in the field
who have contributed significantly to the development of applied
theatre over time. The primary market will be academics and
advanced practitioners in applied theatre, drama education and
theatre studies – including the expanding fields of drama
therapy, theatre and health etc. It will also be useful for
educators exploring creative pedagogy and drama in education
strategies across the curriculum. It will be valuable
introductory background reading for advanced undergraduate and
post-graduate students in drama, theatre studies and theatre arts,
performance studies and community theatre. Â
Spurred on by her Irish Catholic upbringing in the 1950s, Eileen
Tegins decided to enter the convent and become a nun at the young
age of seventeen. Almost immediately, she ran smack up against
rules, regulations, and arcane practices that ran counter to her
free-spirited nature. Deciding this life was not for her she tried
to escape, not once but three times in the first year. During the
second year in the novitiate she was assigned to a mission where
she would meet the person who would change her life forever. There,
the elderly mother superior, Sister Anna, taught her how to develop
her true spiritual self. As the years passed, her work taking care
of those who lived in the poverty-stricken Brooklyn neighborhood of
her parish and beyond, brought her much joy and solidified her
commitment to being a nun. However, all that would change when she
was reassigned to a wealthy parish on Long Island. No longer
allowed to attend to the poor, her life in the convent became
unbearable. She knew the only way she could be true to herself and
to the mission instilled in her by Sister Anna was to escape. But
the decision was a lot easier than the deed.
This book offers a complete and detailed account of the evolution
of an internationally successful, evidence-based program that has
been the result of almost two decades of action research into
conflict and bullying. It addresses one of the most serious
problems encountered in schools and work places worldwide: that of
bullying and inter-personal conflict. The book presents a
comprehensive account of the research, development and refinement
of the DRACON Project and the Acting Against Bullying and Cooling
Conflicts programs. The effective strategies that emerged from the
extensive international research and practice use a combination of
theories of conflict and bullying management with drama techniques
and peer teaching which have been unique in their application. The
book analyses their evolution into an effective program that has
impacted positively on bullying and conflict in a number of
settings. In the UK the program successfully addressed behavioural
problems amongst girls in schools through the use of peer teaching
in a drama setting. In Sweden the program assists nursing students,
nurses and other health professionals to deal with conflict in the
workplace. In Australia it has been applied in hundreds of schools
to reduce bullying and assist newly arrived refugees to deal with
cultural conflict and develop resilience and self- identity in
their new country. This volume makes a major and authentic
contribution to the international effort to find effective
strategies and techniques to deal with interpersonal conflict and
bullying across a range of contexts.
The Irish New Woman explores the textual and ideological
connections between feminist, nationalist and anti-imperialist
writing and political activism at the fin de siecle. From the 1880s
on, the 'Irish Question' was a central site of struggle in British
and Irish public discourse, and in this turbulent period a new
generation of Irish literary writers began to resist hegemonies of
a different kind, subverting gender and sexual identities and
challenging prescribed roles in the family. This important new book
is the first in-depth study which foregrounds the Irish and New
Woman contexts, effecting a paradigm shift in the critical
reception of fin de siecle writers and their work.
This is the first text to present a system for crowd management
which integrates security with the other concerns for the health
and safety for crowds, looking at the theories and practices of the
management processes, plans, monitoring and evaluation of crowds.
The management of crowds in events and festivals is extremely
complex as such situations are unpredictable. Whilst traditional
planning is initially used, a fixed plan only works when the crowd
is compliant. Every event management team now needs to understand
the complexity, the decisions under uncertainty and the long tail
risks in order to successfully plan and maintain optimum crowd
safety. Structured into four sections (Risk, Management, Security
and Health) with templates, explanation points and case studies
throughout, each of the sections is written by experts who have
global experience in their field of excellence. By William O'Toole,
Events Management Specialist, Sydney, Australia with Dr Stephen
Luke (Health) Senior Registrar, Team Rubicon Australia College of
Intensive Care Medicine, Australia, Peter Ashwin (Security)
Principal, Event Risk Management Solutions LLC, Idaho, USA, Dr
Jason Brown (Risk) National Security Director, Thales Australia
& New Zealand, and Andrew Tatrai (Crowds) Chairman
(Non-Executive Director), Australian Concert and Entertainment
Security The Events Management Theory and Methods Series examines
the extent to which mainstream theory is being employed to develop
event-specific theory, and to influence the very core practices of
event management and event tourism. Each compact volume contains
overviews of mainstream management theories and methods, examples
from the events literature, case studies, and guidance on all
aspects of planned-event management. They introduce the theory,
show how it is being used in the events sector through a literature
review, incorporate examples and case studies written by
researchers and/or practitioners, and contain methods that can be
used effectively in the real world. Series editor: Donald Getz.
With online resource material, this mix-and-match collection is
ideal for lecturers who need theoretical foundations and case
studies for their classes, by students in need of reference works,
by professionals wanting increased understanding alongside
practical methods, and by agencies or associations that want their
members and stakeholders to have access to a library of valuable
resources.
'Here's a knocking indeed ' says the Porter in Shakespeare's
Scottish play (Act II, Scene 3) and immediately puts himself into
role in order to deal with the demands of such an early call after
a late night of drinking and carousal: 'If a man were porter of
hell-gate...'. But what roles does the porter of curriculum-gate
take on in order to deal with drama's persistent demands for entry?
Ah, that depends upon the temperature of the times. We, who have
been knocking for what seems to be a very long time, know well that
when evaluation and measurement criteriaare demanded as evidence of
drama's ef cacy, an examiner stands as gatekeeper. When the
educational landscape is in danger of overcrowding, we meet a
territorial governor. And how often has the courtesan turned out to
be only a tease because the arts are, for a brief moment, in the
spotlight for their abilities to foster out-of-the-box thinkers? In
this text, we meet these 'commissionaires' and many more. The
gatekeeping roles and what they represent are so familiar that they
have become cliches to us. We know them by their arguments,
ripostes, dismissals, their brief encouragement and lack of
follow-up. And we know that behind each one (however rmly they
think they keep the keys) is a nancial and political master whose
power controls the curriculum building and everything in it."
This book offers a comprehensive and critical guide to research and
practice in the field of arts education and conflict management.
The DRACON project explores the relationship between drama and
conflict transformation. This international, interdisciplinary and
comparative action research project, begun in 1996, is aimed at
improving conflict management and transformation among adolescent
school students using the medium of educational drama. The book
reports on the underpinning principles, and on action research
practice in Malaysia, Sweden and Australia. The strategies and
techniques, which were revolutionary when first introduced, are now
tried and tested. The book chronicles the history, successes,
opportunities and challenges of the original 10-year project, and
brings the story up to date by highlighting some of its many
legacies and resulting influences around the world. This book will
benefit researchers, academics and graduate students in Education,
the Social Sciences, Dispute Resolution and the Performing Arts.
