This book explores the importance of freedom and liberalism in the
context of socialities, individualities and materialities. The
authors provide a highly unusual and innovative blending of
concepts about space and landscape through a deeply theoretical
exploration of liberalism. Liberalism is often problematized in
contemporary discussions with regard to gentrification,
environmental problems and inequality. In contrast, this book
refers to a liberalism that maximizes life chances in the context
of dealing with spaces. A connection between freedom and space,
based on liberal ideas, provides a much needed theoretical
intervention in the fields of social and spatial sciences.
Ralf Dahrendorf (1929 to 2009) has worked in sociology, political
practice and political philosophy, and is associated with
significant impulses in role theory and conflict theory. This book
presents the first synthesis of his extensive oeuvre in English.
Dahrendorf's political commitment was driven largely by his desire
to maximize life chances, thus contributing to the further
development of liberalism. In the tradition of Karl Popper, his
work in all areas was aimed at defending the open society, and he
saw conflicts, if they were settled, as being suitable in principle
for contributing to social progress. This book provides insights
into the various methodological and theoretical aspects and
critiques of Ralf Dahrendorf's work, as well as his reflections on
the position of sociology in the system of sciences and in relation
to political practice. The current crisis of liberal politics has
made Dahrendorf's work more relevant than ever, and this overview
will be of great interest to students and researchers across
sociology, political science, political ideologies and European
integration.

In the face of great challenges, utopian thinking is currently in
vogue. The fact that utopias, with their ideas of an idealized
target society, are not compatible with the basic features of an
Open Society was already pointed out by Karl Popper in his book
'Die Offene Gesellschaft und ihre Feinde' (The Open Society and its
Enemies) under the impression of National Socialism and Stalinism.
In the present book, further forms of Closed Societies and the
principal similarities (and differences) of their construction are
examined. This is done by drawing on Ralf Dahrendorf's concept of
life chances, in which he deals with the interaction of options and
ligatures. The ambivalence of Dahrendorf's understanding of
ligatures, since they restrict options on the one hand, but also
give them meaning on the other, is resolved by a threefold
differentiation: into ethical and moral, internally and externally
directed, and explicit and implicit ligatures. While the former are
capable of enabling life chances, the latter tend to limit them.
Based on this, the authors elaborate on the landscape (side)
consequences of various closed societies and how ill-suited they
are for dealing with current challenges.
This book is oriented on testing and developing the neopragmatic
approach of horizontal geographies, in which we follow approaches
of natural sciences, social sciences, and cultural studies.
Regional focus is thereby put on a rapidly changing elemental space
and its social representations, characterized by unstable and not
well-defined hybridities: coastal Louisiana. This region is highly
dynamic: the Mississippi River in particular, with its extensive
sediments, has shifted the coastal fringe of present-day Louisiana
into the Gulf of Mexico. This land gain is contrasted by natural
processes, but also by processes resultant of human intervention
which cause marine encroachment. A complex interplay of different
aspects is directly and indirectly leading to coastal land loss
which makes the question of how to describe emerging hybrid spaces
virulent and highlights the limits of a positivist understanding of
boundaries that is also physically geographical. In the
neopragmatic tradition, positivist research findings will be framed
in social constructivist terms and supplemented by phenomenological
approaches to Louisiana's coastal space, thus suggesting the need
for and potentials of horizontal geographic integration of
different theoretical and methodological approaches as well as
researcher perspectives and data bases.

This volume provides a basic introduction to the philosophy of
science and its central concepts, theories, and philosophical,
scientific, and spatial positions and approaches.
The book is dedicated to a compilation of diverse and creative
landscapes which occur in games. Being part of a game setting,
these landscapes trigger social construction processes in specific
ways. A selection of twenty-four research articles addresses the
social constructions of landscapes represented in analogue, digital
and hybrid game formats as well as their theoretical framing and
future perspectives.
This book deals with foodscapes, which are still a relatively young
field of research in the social sciences and were first addressed
in the context of questions of spatial inequality in the mid-1990s.
In addition to an introduction to various landscape concepts as
well as a brief historical outline on the geographical study of
food, the volume focuses on the multidimensionality of foodscapes
and illustrates this with two case studies.
The capital of Louisiana, Baton Rouge, has been the scene of
fundamental changes in recent decades. In the context of the
tripole of petrochemistry, Louisiana State University (LSU) and
public administration (especially of the state of Louisiana), which
has been fully developed since the end of the 1920s, general
processes (such as the transition from modern to post-modern
spatial development) mix with specific local and regional
characteristics and logics, also in dealing with spaces (such as
the eccentric location of the downtown area, the limited influence
of spatial planning). The result is a social-spatial formation of a
'multivillage metropolis'. The investigation of this 'multivillage
metropolis' follows a neopragmatic approach that triangulates
different theories, methods, data and researcher perspectives.

The understanding of landscape in the German-speaking area has some
similarities with the discussions of the topic in other European
languages and scientific communities, but there are some specifics.
These specifics can be found both in the common sense understanding
of landscape and in the history of scientific conceptualization.
Special features of the common sense understanding lie on the one
hand in the medieval roots, a strong romantic charge and the strong
connection between home and landscape. With regard to the
scientific examination of landscape, there are specific fractions
and discontinuities in the German-speaking world. Contents*

In this book an international group of authors reflects mechanisms
of the cultural and social construction of landscapes.
International migration and global exchange are associated with a
multitude of different cultural meanings of landscapes. The logics
of multi-cultural perceptions and meanings of landscape call for
trans-disciplinary research, and for guidance on addressing
culturally sensitive issues and inclusion in practical planning.
Angesichts grosser Herausforderungen hat utopistisches Denken
aktuell Konjunktur.
Verschiedenheiten) ihrer Konstruktion untersucht. Dies geschieht in
Autoren heraus, welche landschaftlichen (Neben)Folgen verschiedene
'neopragmatisch' unterschiedliche theoretische Ansatze in Hinblick

in Verruf.
Hinzukommen neue Stromtrassen.

eher also gesellschaftliche und individuelle Konstruktion
verstanden werden sollte, denn als physischer Gegenstand. Aktuelle
