UV-Visible Spectrophotometry of Waters and Soils, Third Edition presents the latest information on the use of UV spectrophotometry for environmental quality monitoring. Using practical examples, the book illustrates how this technique can be a source of new methods of characterization and measurement. Easy and fast to run, this simple and robust analytical technique is one of the best ways to obtain a quantitative estimation of specific or aggregate parameters (e.g., Nitrate, TOC) and simultaneously qualitative information on the global composition of waters and soils. This third edition presents current methods and applications for water quality monitoring, including recent works and developments. Writing from years of experience in the development and applications of UV systems and from scientific and technical works, the book's authors provide several useful examples that show the great interest of UV spectrophotometry for water and soil monitoring. At the end of the book, the UV spectra library of previous editions is updated with new chemicals of interest.
UV-Visible Spectrophotometry of Water and Wastewater is the first
book dedicated to the use of UV spectrophotometry for water and
wastewater quality monitoring. Using practical examples the reader
is shown how this technique can be a source of new methods of
characterization and measurement. Easy and fast to run, this simple
and robust analytical technique must be considered as one of the
best ways to obtain a quantitative estimation of specific or
aggregate parameters (eg. Nitrate, TOC), and simultaneously
qualitative information on the global composition of water and its
variation.
UV-Visible Spectrophotometry of Water and Wastewater, Second Edition, represents an update to the first book dedicated to the use of UV spectrophotometry for water and wastewater quality monitoring. Using practical examples, the book illustrates how this technique can be a source of new methods of characterization and measurement. Easy and fast to run, this simple and robust analytical technique must be considered as one of the best ways to obtain a quantitative estimation of specific or aggregate parameters (e.g., Nitrate, TOC) and simultaneously qualitative information on the global composition of water and its variation. This second edition presents the current methods and applications for water quality monitoring based on UV spectra, including the most recent works and developments. After the introduction of the basics for UV spectrophotometry understanding, the applications of UV measurement are presented, both from the family of chemicals and water quality parameters and from the type of water. Writing from years of experience in the development and applications of UV systems and from scientific and technical works, the authors provide several useful examples showing the great interest of UV spectrophotometry for water quality monitoring. At the end of the book, the UV spectra library of the first edition is updated with dozens of new chemicals of interest.
Olivier-Thomas Venard's Thomas d'Aquin poete theologien trilogy, an in depth analysis of the scripture of St. Thomas Aquinas, is translated for a new audience in this streamlined anthology. Featuring selections from all three books in the trilogy, chosen in accordance with Venard's direction and discernment, it introduces not only arguments pertinent to the theme of this volume, but an invitation to explore the full breadth of Venard's work. Concentrating on the subjects of scripture, theology and literature, language as a theological question and the word of God, Murphy and Oakes capture the scope and energy of Venard's trilogy while collating many of its key passages. Ranging from the themes of a poetic gospel and Christology to the Thomist theories of semiology and the metaphysics of the Word, this volume sets scholars on the path to a deeper understanding of Aquinas's systematic theology.
The origin of the Intelligent Virtual Agents conference dates from a successful workshop on Intelligent Virtual Environments held in Brighton at the 13th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI'98). This workshop was followed by a second one held in Salford in Manchester in 1999. Subsequent events took place in Madrid, Spain in 2001 and Irsee, Germany in 2003 and attracted participants from both sides of the Atlantic as well as Asia. th This volume contains the proceedings of the 5 International Working Conference on Intelligent Virtual Agents, IVA 2005, held on Kos Island, Greece, September 12-14, 2005, which highlighted once again the importance and vigor of the research field. A half-day workshop under the title "Socially Competent IVA's: We are not alone in this (virtual) world!" also took place as part of this event. IVA 2005 received 69 submissions from Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia. The papers published here are the 26 full papers and 14 short papers presented at the conference, as well as one-page descriptions of the 15 posters and the descriptions of the featured invited talks by Prof. Justine Cassell, of Northwestern University and Prof. Kerstin Dautenhahn, of the University of Hertfordshire. We would like to thank a number of people that have contributed to the success of this conference. First of all, we thank the authors for their high-quality work and their willingness to share their ideas.

The unprecedented growth in the semiconductor, electronics and storage industries is the result of continued miniaturization of circuit devices, increases in chip functionality, and increased storage capacity and performance, along with a decrease in per-function cost. Hardware shrinkage has taken place, leading to similar decreases in the dimensions of interconnection wires, contact metallization and magnetic storage footprints. The increasingly important role of surfaces, interfaces, defects and impurities has raised serious materials questions about how to control the properties of polycrystalline thin films used in applications requiring tight performance tolerances. The understanding of polycrystalline film structures during growth, and the evolution of various film properties with time and temperature, is critical to the successful design and development of smaller devices. This book, first published in 1999, highlights the directions taken to understand and control the properties of polycrystalline materials. Topics include: magnetic thin films; microstructure, texture and stress; copper microstructure; nanocrystalline magnetic thin films and thin-film permanent magnets.
