After trekking nearly 7,500 miles, from Istanbul, Turkey to
Xi’an, China, French travel writer Bernard Ollivier thought he
had put the Silk Road behind him—enough for a retiree to rest on
his laurels! But that was before meeting his now-partner-in-life
Bénédicte Flatet. Why, she asked, hadn’t he set out from
France? After all, the city of Lyon was once Europe’s silk
capital. Â Now, at seventy-five years old, Ollivier decides
to lace up his walking boots and head out to complete his Silk-Road
journey, once and for all: 1,900 miles, from Lyon to Istanbul. Only
this time, he won’t be alone. Flatet has long yearned to hike
side-by-side with Ollivier, so the couple sets out
together . . .
                                                                                                                      Â
This unexpected fourth volume in Ollivier’s Silk Road series (Out
of Istanbul, Walking to Samarkand, and Winds of the Steppe) is a
wonderful bonus for the author’s fans: not only is it the
enthralling continuation of his long walk across Asia, it’s a new
journey unto itself, across Europe, full of delightful firsts, such
as the inclusion of short chronicles by Flatet. Through ten
countries—from familiar France and Italy to the more mysterious
Balkans—the intrepid pair invites us to discover the sometimes
happy, sometimes tragic history of those they encounter, and to
share in their daily lives. Back to Istanbul is both a fervent
appeal for greater understanding among peoples, and a magnificent
declaration of love. Â
This book addresses contemporary issues in the assessment of
plurilingual competence and plurilingual learners. Offering
theoretical and practical lenses, it contributes towards an
integrated and holistic assessment of plurilingual competence and
plurilingual learners. The book provides both theoretical
considerations and empirical approaches around how the
specificities of plurilingual learners can be considered when
assessing their various competences. It covers topics relating to
learners in a variety of plurilingual settings: from the education
of adult immigrants, assessment of young refugees and assessment of
students in school and university, to the assessment of
plurilingual competence in foreign language education. Showcasing a
wide range of international authors, the book provides cutting-edge
research in the domain of multilingual foreign, second and heritage
language assessment, and assessment of content knowledge of
plurilingual students. It bridges the gap between the fields of
language policies and practices, research on plurilingual
competence, and assessment in language education. Providing new
insights into a crucial and contentious issue, this volume will be
essential reading for researchers and postgraduate students in the
fields of educational language policies, applied linguistics and
multilingualism, in particular those involved in the assessment of
plurilingual competence.
Sick of striving? Giving up on grit? Had enough of hustle culture?
Daunted by the 10,000-hour rule? Relax: As the French know, it's
the best way to be better at everything. In the realm of love, what
could be less seductive than someone who's trying to seduce you?
Seduction is the art of succeeding without trying, and that's a
lesson the French have mastered. We can see it in their
laissez-faire parenting, chic style, haute cuisine, and enviable
home cooking: they barely seem to be trying, yet the results are
world-famous, thanks to a certain je ne sais quoi that is the key
to a more creative, fulfilling, and productive life. For fans of
both Mark Manson's The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck and Alain de
Botton's How Proust Can Change Your Life, philosopher Ollivier
Pourriol's book draws on the examples of such French legends as
Descartes, Stendhal, Rodin, Cyrano de Bergerac and Francoise Sagan
to show how to be efficient a la francaise, and how to effortlessly
reap the rewards.

Follow Ella's rise to become a queen of jazz, renowned for her
remarkable scat improvisations, but also for her very personal
interpretations of the Broadway classics and her live performances
with Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, among others. Each spread
recounts a different stage of her life, and key moments are
captured by evocative photos from the time and by Remi Courgeon's
beautiful illustrations. The narrative of the book is recorded on
the accompanying CD, as well as 13 of the singer's most emblematic
recordings.
"Adorable book! Beautiful illustrations! What a fun way to teach
kids about certain animals- by relating them to their moms &
dads. Parents are the center of the world to kids. This book really
gives them a centered comparison they'd understand. There are lots
of facts but they're laid out in little sections which makes it
much less overwhelming. This would be a great intro to a research
project or a compare/contrast writing piece on animals life to
their life (parents)." - VR (Educator) For animals, mommies and
daddies are also very important. And the nine animals you'll get to
know in this book are very caring parents! Discover the world of
the emperor penguin, the fox, the orangutan, the clown fish, the
American flamingo, the red kangaroo, the zebra finch, the wolf, and
the yellow seahorse. Meet the best mommies and daddies in the
animal kingdom in the second book of the "Super Animals" series.

Over the past ten years, the discovery of extrasolar planets has
opened a new field of astronomy, and this area of research is
rapidly growing, from both the observational and theoretical point
of view. The presence of many giant exoplanets in the close
vicinity of their star shows that these newly discovered planetary
systems are very different from the solar system. New theoretical
models are being developed in order to understand their formation
scenarios, and new observational methods are being implemented to
increase the sensitivity of exoplanet detections. In the present
book, the authors address the question of planetary systems from
all aspects. Starting from the facts (the detection of more than
300 extraterrestrial planets), they first describe the various
methods used for these discoveries and propose a synthetic analysis
of their global properties. They then consider the observations of
young stars and circumstellar disks and address the case of the
solar system as a specific example, different from the newly
discovered systems. Then the study of planetary systems and of
exoplanets is presented from a more theoretical point of view. The
book ends with an outlook to future astronomical projects, and a
description of the search for life on exoplanets. This book
addresses students and researchers who wish to better understand
this newly expanding field of research.

innovations from a range of theories and related Conceptual

This volume's title -Knowledge Visualization and Reasoning - is
intended to highlight the shared origins of Conceptual Structures

this book are very talented builders and make their own homes!

find nearby. Each house has its own style, from small and simple to
large and complex. There are animals that prefer to live alone and
others that live in groups. Animals build nests, dig tunnels, build
roads and dams, and webs. Discover the amazing beaver, cross

What makes French girls as serenely self-satisfied as purring
cats...and catnip to the men who admire them?
We'd all be as free as the French girl if we looked like her,
right? The stereotypical French girl is often insolently thin,
casually chic, and fashionable despite a simple wardrobe. With or
without makeup she is always put together and utterly
self-confident, imbued with natural elegance and an elusive
distance that is particularly, maddeningly French.
But this stereotype obscures delicious pardoxes about the French
girl and her body. Yes, she does have an exasperating tendency to
be thin. Reams have been written trying to decode the mystery of a
people who smoke, drink, eat goose fat, and still look fabulous.
But in reality, the French girl comes in a multitude of styles and
body shapes, and whatever her figure, she looks remarkable and just
plain sexy.
The French girl understands that sexy is a state of mind. Her
relationship to food and her body is sensual, not tyrannical, and
she takes pleasure in both.
