Oris, Gisbert L. Brunner
R1,492 Discovery Miles 14 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this new volume of the Watch Book series, successful author Gisbert L. Brunner focuses on Swiss watch history and the watch industry, and in particular on the house of Oris, because what could be a more fitting connection than that of the leading expert when it comes to mechanical timepieces with the watch manufactory that is one of the few to produce exclusively mechanical watches. Founded in 1904, the company stands out in many ways in the luxury world of horology, it is run independently and not by a large corporation, it is valued as a down-to-earth brand and - in an industry that is not necessarily known for this - it focuses on sustainability, true to the motto: "Things have to make sense". Of course, technology should not be missing from this volume; after all, Oris has developed 280 different calibres in its company history and manufactured them in its own factories. Companions have their say and the best watch models of the company's almost 120-year history are presented in this usual high-quality volume.

Necessary Intentionality - A Study in the Metaphysics of Aboutness (Hardcover, New): Ori Simchen Necessary Intentionality - A Study in the Metaphysics of Aboutness (Hardcover, New)
Ori Simchen
R2,245 R1,937 Discovery Miles 19 370 Save R308 (14%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Some things in the world-intentional items such as words, thoughts, portraits, and passport photos-are about things, whereas other things in the world-sticks, stones, and fireflies-are not about anything. Necessary Intentionality is a study of aboutness, or intentionality, with a focus on the following question: are intentional items typically about whatever they are about as a matter of necessity, or is their aboutness, rather, a matter of mere contingency? Consider, for example, a particular name referring to a particular person, or a specific belief with respect to some particular thing that it is such and so. Is it possible for the name not to have referred to the person and for the belief not to have been about the thing? Ori Simchen defends a negative answer to such questions. That the name refers to the person is necessary for the name and that the belief is about the thing is necessary for the belief. Simchen articulates his overall position in two main stages. In the first stage he fleshes out a requisite modal metaphysical background. In the second stage he brings the modal metaphysics to bear on cognition, specifically the aboutness of cognitive states and episodes. Simchen presents a productivist approach, which takes aboutness to be determined by the conditions of production of intentional items, rather than an interpretationist approach that takes aboutness to be determined by conditions of consumption of such items.

Understanding Shiite Leadership - The Art of the Middle Ground in Iran and Lebanon (Hardcover): Shaul Mishal, Ori Goldberg Understanding Shiite Leadership - The Art of the Middle Ground in Iran and Lebanon (Hardcover)
Shaul Mishal, Ori Goldberg
R2,506 R2,063 Discovery Miles 20 630 Save R443 (18%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book, Shaul Mishal and Ori Goldberg explore the ways in which Shiite leaderships in Iran and Lebanon approach themselves and their world. Contrary to the violent and radical image of religious leaderships in the Islamic Republic of Iran and Lebanese Hizballah, the political vision and practice of these leaderships view the world as a middle ground, shying away from absolutist and extremist tendencies. The political leadership assumed by Shiite religious scholars in Iran and Lebanon has transformed Shiite Islam from a marginalized minority to a highly politicized avant garde of Muslim presence, revitalized the practice and causes of political Islam in its struggle for legitimacy and authority, and reshaped the politics of the Middle East and the globe in its image. Utilizing approaches from social theory, history, theology, and literary criticism, the book presents these leaderships as pragmatic, interpretative entities with the potential to form fruitful relationships between Shiite leadership and the non-Shiite world.

Michel Oris, Caroline Roberts, Dominique Joye, Michele Ernst-Stahli
R1,579 Discovery Miles 15 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This open access book details tools and procedures for data collections of hard-to-reach, hard-to-survey populations. Inside, readers will discover first-hand insights from experts who share their successes as well as their failures in their attempts to identify and measure human vulnerabilities across the life course. Coverage first provides an introduction on studying vulnerabilities based on the Total Error Survey framework. Next, the authors present concrete examples on how to survey such populations as the elderly, migrants, widows and widowers, couples facing breast cancer, employees and job seekers, displaced workers, and teenagers during their transition to adulthood. In addition, one essay discusses the rationale for the use of life history calendars in studying social and psychological vulnerability while another records the difficulty the authors faced when trying to set-up an online social network to collect relevant data. Overall, this book demonstrates the importance to have, from the very beginning, a dialogue between specialists of survey methods and the researchers working on social dynamics across the life span. It will serve as an indispensable resource for social scientists interested in gathering and analyzing data on vulnerable individuals and populations in order to construct longitudinal data bases and properly target social policies.

Physical Systems - Conceptual Pathways between Flat Space-time and Matter (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): Ori Belkind Physical Systems - Conceptual Pathways between Flat Space-time and Matter (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Ori Belkind
R2,878 Discovery Miles 28 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Based on the concept of a physical system, this book offers a new philosophical interpretation of classical mechanics and the Special Theory of Relativity. According to Belkind's view the role of physical theory is to describe the motions of the parts of a physical system in relation to the motions of the whole. This approach provides a new perspective into the foundations of physical theory, where motions of parts and wholes of physical systems are taken to be fundamental, prior to spacetime, material properties and laws of motion. He defends this claim with a constructive project, deriving basic aspects of classical theories from the motions of parts and wholes. This exciting project will challenge readers to reevaluate how they understand the structure of the physical world in which we live.

Acquisition Reversal - The Effects of Postlingual Deafness in Yoruba (Hardcover, New): Olanike Ola Orie Acquisition Reversal - The Effects of Postlingual Deafness in Yoruba (Hardcover, New)
Olanike Ola Orie
R4,750 Discovery Miles 47 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is the first comprehensive account of prolonged hearing loss and its impact on a language that was once spoken fluently. Although it is currently assumed that hearing loss results in speech deterioration, it is shown that language loss occurs when speakers remain deaf for a long time. The reader is introduced to a significant deaf population - postlingually deafened Yoruba speakers who have been deaf for more than twenty years and who have no access to hearing aids or speech therapy. After becoming deaf, they continue to speak Yoruba from memory and "hear" visually through lip reading. These speakers exhibit phonological, lexical and syntactic losses which mirror acquisition patterns attested in the speech of Yoruba children. Based on these similarities, it is argued that a direct link exists between language loss and first language acquisition. It is further argued that prolonged deafness results in language reversal. Finally, the book presents the first description of the sign language and gestures used by deafened speakers to augment their spoken language. These findings will be of value to linguists, speech, language and hearing therapists, anthropologists, Africanists, deaf studies researchers, and non-specialists who are interested in hearing health and wellness.

Management of Medical Technology - Theory, Practice and Cases (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): Eliezer Geisler, Ori Heller Management of Medical Technology - Theory, Practice and Cases (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
Eliezer Geisler, Ori Heller
R5,891 Discovery Miles 58 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The health care delivery system, its organizations, and its supporting industries are currently undergoing immense changes and at the center of this change is technology. This book is about the management of this technology. The authors refer to this new intellectual space as the Management of Medical Technology (MMT). From the core activities of delivering medical care, to the supporting industries producing technical systems, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, information technology, and finally to the insurers of health care - all of these demonstrate the central role technology plays in delivering health. Management of Medical Technology examines the many aspects of managing medical technology, discusses its key issues, and outlines how it can be managed more effectively. This is a foundational book in Kluwer's Series on MMT. It is designed for academics and students in all areas of management related to health care, as a text for related undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as a reference book for health care executives and managers of technology in industry. The book is divided into three complementary parts. Part 1 explores the theory of MMT and in six chapters outlines the new intellectual space of MMT and its theoretical background. Part 2 is dedicated to the practice of MMT. This part has six chapters and describes the two main empirical studies conducted by the authors on MMT; one study examined how hospitals currently manage medical technology and the second study investigated the management of medical information technology. Moreover, related to the practice of MMT, this part also discusses in detail issues of effectiveness of delivery, patient value and patientwelfare, and education in MMT. Part 3 is a thorough treatment of MMT cases in a variety of health care organizations, each describing a different phenomenon in the practice of MMT. Eleven cases are included, with discussion questions for use in the classroom.

Ori Wertman, Christian Kaunert
R3,050 Discovery Miles 30 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is the first comprehensive, book-length analysis of Israel and securitization processes. It develops an original analytical framework to ameliorate the theoretical understanding of the audience component during the securitization process, drawing upon insights from both securitization theory, political psychology, and IR theory. This gives us significant new insights into why some audiences are essential to be persuaded for securitization to occur, while others are not. This book also examines the role of the United States in defining what matters in Israeli National Security. In essence, since the United States is Israel's most significant ally, it is essential for the Israeli leadership to gain the American government's support (or its lack of resistance) for almost any securitization acts. The book analyses a highly original set of interviews with prominent figures in Israel who were at the top level of the Israeli decision-making process, including members of the political and military echelons. "Through unparalleled access to Israel's political and security echelons, Israel: National Security and Securitization provides a unique overview of Israel’s decision-maker's political perception over the years". Ehud Olmert- Prime Minister of Israel 2006-2009 "Israel: National Security and Securitization provides a powerful analysis of how the State of Israel confronted security threats, and what was the American involvement in the Israeli decision-making process".  Amos Yadlin, IDF Military Intelligence Directorate Chief 2006-2010 "This book makes us understand securitization in a novel and enlightening way, thus making a substantial contribution to our understanding of national security in general and Israeli security in particular". Gabriel Ben-Dor, University of Haifa "Wertman and Kaunert's book makes an important and unique contribution to the existing and developing literature on securitization". Kobi Michael, Institute for National Security Studies

Shi'i Theology in Iran - The Challenge of Religious Experience (Hardcover): Ori Goldberg Shi'i Theology in Iran - The Challenge of Religious Experience (Hardcover)
Ori Goldberg
R4,270 Discovery Miles 42 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Taking a theologically oriented method for engaging with historical and cultural phenomena, this book explores the challenge, offered by revolutionary Shi i theology in Iran, to Western conventions on theology, revolution and religion 's role in the creation of identity.

Offering a stringent critique of current literature on political Islam and on Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, the author suggests that current literature fails to perceive and engage with the revolution and its thought as religious phenomena. Grounded in the experience of unconditional faith in God, Shi'i thinkers recognize a distinction between the human and the divine. Concerned with the challenge of constructing a virtuous society, these thinkers pose a model of authority and morality based on mediation, interpretation and participation in the experience of faith. Ori Goldberg considers this interpretative model utilizing a broad array of theoretical tools, most notably critical theologies drawn from Jewish and Christian thought. He draws on a close reading of several texts written by prominent Iranian Shi'i thinkers between 1940 and 2000, most of which are translated into English for the first time, to reveal a vibrant, complex discourse.

Presenting a new interfaith perspective on a subject usually considered beyond the scope of such research, this book will be an important reference for scholars of Iranian studies, political Islam, theology and cultural studies.

Managing Technology in Healthcare (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): Eliezer Geisler, Ori Heller Managing Technology in Healthcare (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
Eliezer Geisler, Ori Heller
R5,723 Discovery Miles 57 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Technology plays a critical role in the management of health care, the system, its delivery and its organizations. This book examines the role of technology in the delivery of health care by physicians and other health care workers, and their respective roles in the management of health care technology. The complexity of the health care environment and the difficulties in managing technology in general (and in health care in particular) makes this book a landmark exploration for the purpose of creating in-roads into the largely uncharted territory of health care technology. The chapters in this book will introduce the horizons that are open for scholarly pursuit in this area. Managing Technology in Healthcare has two main objectives. First, to provide the reader with an overview of the main issues of concern and the topics of study in managing technology in health care. Second, to offer the reader specific knowledge embedded in the eleven chapters of the book, covering a broad range of topics of interest to health care and to R&D/technology scholars and practitioners.

Nigerian News Coverage of Intimate Partner Violence, 2011-2022: Aje-Ori Agbese Nigerian News Coverage of Intimate Partner Violence, 2011-2022
Aje-Ori Agbese
R1,958 Discovery Miles 19 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Intimate partner violence is a prevalent problem that affects both men and women not only in Nigeria, but around the world. According to the ManKind Initiative, one in three women and one in six to seven men have fallen victim to domestic violence. Due to these large numbers, there has been an increase in news coverage, which has had both positive and negative impacts on how intimate partner violence has been defined, expressed, and handled. Aje-Ori Agbese’s book sheds light on the news coverage of intimate partner violence in Nigeria, including the hidden menace of female-perpetrated violence against men through an analysis of three national newspapers and two news blogs from 2011 to 2022. The analysis determined that women are the prominent victims and face of intimate partner violence in Nigeria, excluding many male victims. In fact, if the victim, either male or female, was not killed or did not die due to a violent attack, it was very unlikely for the mass media to cover it. Agbese explores why this is happening and provides information on how journalists and bloggers can become more inclusive in order to redefine the narrative and help manage intimate partner violence.

Philosophical Representation - Studies in Attitudinal Instrumentalism (Hardcover): Ori Simchen Philosophical Representation - Studies in Attitudinal Instrumentalism (Hardcover)
Ori Simchen
R3,687 Discovery Miles 36 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book focuses on how we should treat philosophy’s theoretical representations. It argues in favor of an instrumentalist attitude towards pivotal cases of theoretical representation in philosophy that are commonly regarded under a realist attitude. Philosophy is awash with theoretical representations, which raises the question of how we should regard them. This book argues that representations in philosophy should not be regarded under a realist attitude by default as individually disclosing the nature of what they represent. Ori Simchen introduces the reader to the general theme of representations in philosophy and our attitudes towards them via case studies: numbers, modality, and belief. He offers a framework for deciding when a realist attitude towards a theoretical representation is warranted and concludes that the representations deployed in the case studies fail the proposed test. The next part of the book illustrates the attractiveness of attitudinal instrumentalism towards representations in semantics, in the philosophy of mind, and within the problematics of rule-following. Philosophical Representation will appeal to researchers and advanced students working in philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, metaphysics, philosophical logic, and philosophical methodology.
