Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made

No single system of development can accommodate all variations of
the economic, social and political environments in developing
economies. The authors of this book analyse the changing role of
the public sector in promoting socioeconomic development. They
concentrate their study on the three major issues of macroeconomic
management in development planning: market mechanisms, financial
management and enterprise management, and the transfer and
development of technology. Planning practitioners and scholars and
students of economic development should find this book provides
important theoretical insights, as well as the experiences of
various countries in managing their economic progress.
The speed with which business has become globally integrated is
impressive and almost frightening. Much of this change has come
from the Pacific Basin. At the same time, however, the Taiwanese,
Chinese and Southeast Asians have also suffered from these rapid
changes. The paranoia associated with rapidly escalating rates of
foreign investment in China by a small country like Taiwan, for
example, may provide an index of the anxiety that such change can
engender.
The studies in this collection of research articles provide a
considered, rational approach to some of these changing patterns of
world business--economic growth, regional trade, foreign direct
investment, capital markets, and trade restrictions. The patterns
of changing interlocking global business systems revealed in these
articles are fascinating and reassuring. It is interesting and
enlightening to see how these Asian business systems interlock
where the parallel political systems may be in conflict.

This book is concerned with trainee professionals and their search
for meaning through the determined and creative pursuit of a
cross-cultural career transition. Adopting a qualitative research
framework, the book describes the career experience of professional
trainees from non-Western cultures who have chosen to develop their
careers in the West. It examines the process of the initial
consideration of change, the exploring of options (including
whether to emigrate) and how the many issues and challenges of
adapting to the socio-cultural environment of the host country were
met. In addition it examines how the process provided the trainee
professionals involved with greater self-understanding and how as a
result they were able to further consider their future career
plans. The book then highlights the implications of these
experiences for theory, research and practice.
This volume contains a collection of the papers presented during
the First International ACM-L Workshop, which was held in Tucson,
Arizona, on November 8, 2006, during the 25th International
Conference on Conceptual Modeling, ER 2006. The workshop focused on
enhancing the fundamental understanding of how to model continual
learning from past experiences and how to capture knowledge from
transitions between system states.
Active conceptual modeling is a continual process of describing
all aspects of a domain, its activities, and changes from different
perspectives based on our knowledge and understanding.
Included in this state-of-the-art survey are 11 revised full
papers, carefully reviewed and selected from the workshop
presentations. Rounded off with 4 invited lectures and an
introductory and motivational overview, these papers represent the
current thinking in conceptual modeling research.
This volume contains a collection of selected papers presented at
the Symposium on Conceptual Modeling, which was held in Los
Angeles, California, on December 2, th 1997, immediately before the
16 International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER'97), which
was held at UCLA. A total of eighteen papers were selected for
inclusion in this volume. These papers are written by experts in
the conceptual modeling area and represent the most current
thinking of these experts. This volume also contains the summaries
of three workshops that were held on 6 7 December 1997, immediately
after the ER'97 conference at UCLA. The topics of these three
workshops are: * Behavioral Modeling * Conceptual Modeling in
Multimedia Information Seeking * What Is the Role of Cognition in
Conceptual Modeling? Since these topics are not only very important
but also very timely, we think it is appropriate to include the
summary of these three workshops in this volume. Those readers
interested in further investigating topics related to the three
workshops can either look up the individual paper published on the
Web or contact the authors directly. The summary paper by Chen at
the beginning of this volume also includes the summary of several
interesting speeches at the Symposium.

The objective of the workshops associated with the ER'99 18th
International Conference on Conceptual Modeling is to give
participants access to high level presentations on specialized,
hot, or emerging scientific topics. Three themes have been selected
in this respect: - Evolution and Change in Data Management
(ECDM'99) dealing with han dling the evolution of data and data
structure, - Reverse Engineering in Information Systems (REIS'99)
aimed at exploring the issues raised by legacy systems, - The World
Wide Web and Conceptual Modehng (WWWCM'99) which ana lyzes the
mutual contribution of WWW resources and techniques with con
ceptual modeling. ER'99 has been organized so that there is no
overlap between conference ses sions and the workshops. Therefore
participants can follow both the conference and the workshop
presentations they are interested in. I would like to thank the
ER'99 program co-chairs, Jacky Akoka and Mokrane Bouzeghoub for
having given me the opportunity to organize these workshops. I
would also like to thank Stephen Liddle for his valuable help in
managing the evaluation procedure for submitted papers and helping
to prepare the workshop proceedings for publication. August 1999
Jacques Kouloumdjian Preface for ECDM'99 The first part of this
volume contains the proceedings of the First International Workshop
on Evolution and Change in Data Management, ECDM'99, which was held
in conjunction with the 18th International Conference on Conceptual
Modehng (ER'99) in Paris, France, November 15-18, 1999.
This book examines changes in Taiwan's policies toward Mainland
China under former Republic of China (ROC) President Ma Ying-jeou
(2008-16) and considers their implications for US policy toward the
Taiwan Strait. In recent years, the People's Republic of China
(PRC)'s increasingly assertive foreign policy behaviors have
heightened tensions with its regional neighbors as well as the
United States. However, under the Kuomintang (KMT) administration
of Ma Ying-jeou, Taiwan discounted Beijing's coercion and pursued
rapprochement on the basis of the "1992 consensus," which was a
tacit agreement reached between the KMT and Chinese Communist Party
in 1992 that both Taiwan and the mainland belong to one China
though that "China" is subjected to either side's different
interpretations. The author of this volume analyzes why Taipei
underreacted towards the security challenges posed by the PRC and
chartered policies that sometimes went against the interests of
Washington and its allies in the Asia-Pacific. The KMT was pushing
for nation-building initiatives to rejuvenate the ROC's "one China"
ruling legitimacy and to supplant pro-independence forces within
Taiwan. The island's deeply fragmented domestic politics and
partisanship have led policy elites to choose suboptimal strategy
and, thereby, weakening its security position. The implications
from this study are equally applicable to Taiwan's newly elected
Democratic Progressive Party government that has taken off ice in
2016.
This book explores U.S.-Taiwan-China relations during both the
Trump and Biden administrations, revealing how policy changes under
both presidents have impacted Washington's decades-long strategic
policy framework for Cross-Strait Relations. By tracing the
continuities and changes of U.S. Strategic ambiguity and One-China
Policy framework between the Trump and Biden administrations, the
book assesses how the foreign policy prism, through which U.S.
leaders view China and Taiwan, has experienced a distinct
alteration and subsequently led to a policy adjustment. Utilising a
wide range of documents and primary material, such as White House
documents (ranging from the Clinton to the Biden administrations)
in conjunction with interviews with Taiwan officials, this volume
brings a detailed portrait of past, present, and potential future
U.S.-Taiwan-China relations. Moreover, it provides a succinct
examination of U.S. foreign policy traditions such as
internationalism, nationalism, and multilateral nationalism
(providing a study of U.S.-China relations and policies from Nixon
to Biden) and the resulting influence of such traditions on recent
U.S. Cross-Strait policy. Presenting a comprehensive study of both
the Trump and Biden administrations approach to Taiwan, this will
be a valuable resource for any scholar or student of U.S. Foreign
Policy, U.S.-Taiwan-China Relations and Cross-Strait Relations.
This book examines a research study that describes the critical
interaction between ethnicity and career development in lives of
Chinese-Canadian young adults. Through an empirical inquiry
following a qualitative research framework, the book provides an
in-depth foundation for the scarcely researched area of career
development of Chinese-Canadians, engendering original new
knowledge contributing to the interdisciplinary studies of
vocational and career psychology and cross-cultural psychology.
Drawn from several major career development theories and other
pertinent literature, the research participants' dynamic and
complex processes involved in career choice and decision-making are
identified and analysed.

The book presents a research study that examined the retraining and
career development experiences of new and professional immigrants
in Canada. The study intended to provide an in-depth perspective
into the influence of immigrants optimism and self-efficacy on
their retraining and career development experiences. Using a
qualitative methodology, in-depth interviews were conducted and a
grounded theory approach was employed to analyze the data. Central
themes within participant narratives emerged and key results were
introduced. Participants experiences included a myriad of barriers
and challenges, yet many viewed this experience as a positive
opportunity for growth and development. The results explored
differences between optimists and pessimists retraining and career
development experiences, as well as the role of self-efficacy
within immigrants career development. Results have implications for
career and vocational psychology literature, practice, and career
counselling, and include suggestions for future researchers.
A collection of articles related to college application and
children education.
