This volume of proceedings contains the papers from the third in a successful series of conferences organized by the Deutscher Verband fur Materialforschung undprufung DVM]. The purpose of the conference was to review methods of improving the performance of materials and structures and to extend working life, especially under complex loading conditions such as environmental attack and high temperature degradation as well as providing a comprehensive evaluation of recent progress in low cycle fatigue and elasto-plastic behaviour of materials. Safe design and effective operation of highly stressed structures rely on the extensive use of mechanical approaches and micromechanics analysis to predict the deformation and fracture response of materials in service. Because of the need to create greater confidence in the engineering world in advanced materials as efficient replacements for conventional materials, many of the papers emphasize the role of new materials and emerging technology.

Applications of communication networks lead to radical changes in human life. Fieldbus technology is part of this development acting in close connection to systems control and in critical domains. Equipped with sensitive sensors, fieldbus technology becomes the backbone of many processes of our daily life. In automation technology, fieldbus systems are essential parts of modern applications. In airplanes and in near future also in automobiles, mechanical control is replaced by "x by wirea systems based on fieldbusses, a technique more efficient and flexible, but also cheaper. Moreover, fieldbus technology, used in factories, hospitals, laboratories for the collection of numerous data, enables a more efficient and reliable operation of these complex environments. This book is a collection of articles submitted to the fieldbus conference FeT'99 in Magdeburg, Germany. The articles were reviewed by an international program committee which decided to include some high quality articles not presented at the conference. The book comprises chapters dealing with important aspects of fieldbus technology and reflecting areas of main activity in science and industry: real-time aspects, networking, management, OPC, system aspects, realization, protocol specifications (supplements to introduced fieldbus systems), validation, profile development (i. e. specification of application semantics) and research projects. A further chapter reports on the European harmonization project NOAH.

Arusha National Park in northern Tanzania, known for its scenic beauty, is also a battleground. Roderick Neumann's illuminating analysis shows how this park embodies all the political-ecological dilemmas facing protected areas throughout Africa. The roots of the ongoing struggle between the park on Mount Meru and the neighboring Meru peasant communities go much deeper, in Neumann's view, than the issues of poverty, population growth, and ignorance usually cited. These conflicts reflect differences that go back to the beginning of colonial rule. By imposing a European ideal of pristine wilderness, Neumann says, the establishment of national parks and protected areas displaced African meanings as well as material access to the land. DNA methylation is a type of chemical modification of DNA that can be inherited without changing the DNA sequence. As such, it is part of the epigenetic code and is the most characterised epigenetic mechanism. DNA methylation involves the addition of a methyl group to DNA -- for example, to the number 5 carbon of the cytosine pyrimidine ring. DNA methylation is probably universal in eukaryotes. In humans, approximately 1% of DNA bases undergo DNA methylation. In adult somatic tissues, DNA methylation typically occurs in a CpG dinucleotide context; non-CpG methylation is prevalent in embryonic stem cells.In plants, cytosines are methylated both symmetrically (CpG or CpNpG) and asymmetrically (CpNpNp), where N can be any nucleotide. The methylation status of specific cytosines can be determined using methods based on bisulfite sequencing. This book presents leading-edge research advances in the field.
