First published in 1924, Veinte poemas de amor y una cancion desesperada remains among Pablo Neruda's most popular work. Daringly metaphorical and sensuous, this collection juxtaposes youthful passion with the desolation of grief. Drawn from the poet's most intimate and personal associations, the poems combine eroticism and the natural world with the influence of expressionism and the genius of a master poet. This edition features the newly corrected original Spanish text, with masterly English translations by award-winning poet W. S. Merwin on facing pages.Includes twelve sketches by Pablo PicassoNew introduction by Cristina GarciaA Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition pacjaged with French flaps

Correspondence - Pablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein (Paperback): Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso Correspondence - Pablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein (Paperback)
Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso; Translated by Lorna Scott Fox; Edited by Laurence Madeline
R667 Discovery Miles 6 670 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Pablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein. Few can be said to have had as broad an impact on European art in the twentieth century as these two cultural giants. Pablo Picasso, a pioneering visual artist, created a prolific and widely influential body of work. Gertrude Stein, an intellectual tastemaker, hosted the leading salon for artists and writers between the wars in her Paris apartment, welcoming Henri Matisse, Ernest Hemingway, and Ezra Pound to weekly events at her home to discuss art and literature. It comes as no surprise, then, that Picasso and Stein were fast friends and frequent confidantes. Through Picasso and Stein's casual notes and reflective letters, this volume of correspondence between the two captures Paris both in the golden age of the early twentieth century and in one of its darkest hours, the Nazi occupation through mentions of dinner parties, lovers, work, and the crises of the two world wars. Illustrated with photographs and postcards, as well as drawings and paintings by Picasso, this collection captures an exhilarating period in European culture through the minds of two artistic greats.

Tardieu's poetry has an almost childlike simplicity, and in France his work is studied both in universities and schools. He addresses problems of experience and language central to modern literature, bringing lively wit and humor to bear upon an anguished interrogation of the world. Tardieu was born in 1903, and this selection spans seventy years of his writing. In his early years the difficulties of writing lyric poetry in a schizophrenic age led him to a multiplication of poetic voices, and so to working for the stage, where he was writing what was subsequently dubbed 'Theatre of the Absurd' before Beckett's or Ionesco's plays had ever been performed in public.

Pablo Picasso always maintained a complex and intense relationship with photography and with the photographers in his milieu, something that could be seen when he pretended to be a reporter one summer, when he used his image as an icon, or when he took inspired and playful self-portraits. This book, which is also the catalogue of the exhibition of the same name at the Museu Picasso of Barcelona, immerses the reader in the universe of Picasso through photography and brings together images that explore all the facets of a creator who is simultaneously the author, model, witness and viewer of his work and life.

This spectacular volume, co-published with the Centro Botin, collects the works shown in the Picasso Ibero exhibition, where the relationship of the genius from Malaga to Iberian art is analyzed. The artist probably came into contact with the Iberian universe when he was still living between Madrid and Barcelona, but it was during his visits to the Louvre Museum in Paris that this encounter came to life. The book splendidly shows this fertile relationship, comparing works by Picasso with Iberian pieces from the Louvre and the main Spanish archaeological museums, to form an intense and beautiful artistic dialogue.

In the 1940s, Picasso wrote two plays in French: the first, Desire Caught by the Tail, was conceived during the German occupation of Paris and features a cast of grotesque allegorical characters such as the Onion, Silence or Fat Anxiety discussing the crucial wartime themes of hunger, cold and love; the second, The Four Little Girls, came about a few years after the end of the war on the French Riviera, and presents the stream-of-consciousness thoughts of four unnamed girls in a vegetable garden, revealing an unexpectedly evil aspect of childhood. These surreal compositions, which were meant to be read aloud rather than formally staged, are a testament to the great artist's imaginative powers, and have been considered as forerunners to the theatre of the absurd of the 1950s, as exemplified by Beckett, Ionesco and Adamov. This volume also contains the accompanying illustrations by Picasso himself.

ABOUT THE SERIES: The 101 Pages series has been created with the aim of redefining and enriching the classics canon by promoting unjustly neglected works of enduring significance. These texts have been treated with a fresh editorial approach, and are presented in an elegantly designed format.

At the age of 81, Yvon Lambert is one of the most influential collectors of our time. He was only 14 years old when he used his pocket money to buy his first work of art. In 1966, he opened his own gallery in Paris, which soon became a top venue for contemporary art. It was Lambert who introduced the minimal art, land art and conceptual art movements to a wider European audience at a time when they were still relatively new. Besides his work as an art dealer, Lambert has spent the past fifty years creating one of the most prominent collections of contemporary art. In 2011, he donated more than 600 of his works to the French state, which are now on display in a specially dedicated museum in Avignon. In the context of the art project Skulptur Projekte Munster 2017, the Pablo Picasso Art Museum in Munster brings the Lambert Collection to Germany for the first time. In particular, the exhibition features works of artists who have been part of the Skulptur Projekte programme since its early years. Some of their works include installations that still exist in the city today.

Between 1917 and 1962, Pablo Picasso was involved in creating the designs for nine ballets including 'Parade', 'Pulcinella' and 'L'Apres-midi d'un Faune', in collaboration with such artists as Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Igor Stravinsky, Claude Debussy, Leonide Massine and Vaslav Nijinsky. Picasso, a native of Andalusia, also created the sets and costumes for the very Spanish ballet, 'Le Tricorne' ('The Three-Cornered Hat'). This release features the entire ballet along with a documentary which traces the story of Picasso's involvement with designs for ballet.
