This book focuses on innovative strategies to manage and build
software systems for generating new knowledge from large
archaeological data sets The book also reports on two case studies
carried out in real-world scenarios within the Cultural Heritage
setting. The book presents an original conceptual framework for
developing software solutions to assist the knowledge generation
process in connection with large archaeological data sets and
related cultural heritage information- a context in which the
inputs are mainly textual sources written in freestyle, i.e.
without a predetermined, standard structure. Following an in-depth
exploration of recent works on the knowledge generation process in
the above-mentioned context and IT-based options for facilitating
it, the book proposes specific new techniques capable of capturing
the structure and semantics implicit in such textual sources, and
argues for using this information in the knowledge generation
process. The main result is the development of a conceptual
framework that can accommodate textual sources and integrate the
information included in them into a software engineering framework.
The said framework is meant to assist cultural heritage
professionals in general, and archaeologists in particular, in both
knowledge extraction and the subsequent decision-making process.
This book presents an interdisciplinary study of the El Mirador
cave located on the Atapuerca karstic system, one of the longest
Pleistocene and Holocene archaeopaleontological deposits in Iberia.
This book presents the results including new unpublished and
published data to discuss different aspects related to the
prehistoric herders and farmers that occupied this territory.
Divided into four parts, the book covers site presentation and the
paleoenvironmental reconstruction covering a chronological span
between 7060 +/- 40-3040 +/- 40 yrs. The history of the excavation
and the excavation methodology is detailed in this part including
new unpublished recording techniques using 3D scanning and
photogrammetry and a very meticulous sampling strategy. The book
presents formation processes of the deposit which are key to
understanding the successive occupations of the caves regarding its
use as sheepfold cave as well as human remains that are part of
different funerary contexts in the cave. In the last section, the
book covers material culture found in the cave including lithic
tools and pottery. This interdisciplinary work is of interest to
scholars in anthracology, zooarchaeology, paleoanthropology, lithic
technology, and experimental archaeology.
This text demonstrates how collective reflection can function as a
central part of effective teacher preparation for work in inclusive
bilingual environments. Through analysis of rich qualitative data,
Teacher Education for Inclusive Bilingual Contexts shows how group
reflection supports pre-service educators to recognize the
intersectional circumstances faced by students and understand their
identities beyond the possible confines of disability. This, in
turn, engenders reconceptualization of standardized expectations
and implicates the educator in developing student agency through
individualized use of routine, language, and materials. The author
offers cultural historical activity theory and disability studies
in education as a basis for dialectal interactions to unearth
contradictions and misunderstandings surrounding language
acquisition and the learning of emergent bilinguals and highlight
the ways in which educators can disrupt oppressive practices
through expansive learning opportunities. This insightful volume
will be of interest to researchers, scholars, and postgraduate
students in the fields of inclusive education and disability
studies, bilingual and language education, and teacher education.
School leaders search for effective and practical ways to live out
what research tells us makes a difference in student learning.
Research literature is easy to embrace theoretically, but it is
much more difficult to turn research into compelling collective
action. How do we create the climate where the trusting members of
a 'professional learning community' improve the results of their
practice? What does it take to be the 'small learning community'
that includes students and parents as well as professional
educators? What will we do to harness the positive power of
'community' to transform the learning and achievement of all
students? This walk-through protocol provides both a process and a
tool for inquiry-based professional development, community
engagement, and ultimately, student self-direction. It starts with
a school's commitment to build an inquiry model that assumes the
capacity for extraordinary learning on the part of students,
teachers, administrators, and families. The protocol can be
employed narrowly_to guide the improving practice of a couple of
teachers with a passion for biology, for example_or more broadly.
Many of the improving schools highlighted in the chapters of this
book chose the walk-through protocol as a frame for school-wide
professional development that led to exceptional growth in learning
and student achievement. This process allows schools to create a
community where all members approach learning as an inquiry and are
proactive designers of their success.
Grounded in authentic teaching and learning experiences, this book
shows elementary school educators how to create spaces that more
respectfully and humanely address the needs of emergent bilinguals
with disabilities. While the fields of bilingual education and
disability studies have been traditionally kept separate,
Martinez-Alvarez argues that many of the constructs researchers and
educators employ in their respective fields can be combined to
improve instruction. This book establishes a dialogue among
important constructs such as issues of assimilation and ableism,
and the expansion of identity, agency, and humanistic pedagogies.
It then looks at how these constructs can be used to better
understand children who have been assigned inflexible labels that
do not cohesively represent their bilingual/bicultural identities
and their varied ways of learning. The text explores the
limitations of categorizing children into "boxes," particularly
those of minoritized backgrounds, and focuses on actual practices
that will engage and empower learners. Book Features: Combines the
fields of bilingual education and disability studies so that
bilingual students with disabilities can be understood and taught
from a strengths-based perspective. Includes activity invitations
to help teachers create high-quality learning spaces. Provides
sample work from diverse elementary school-aged children, as well
as children's responses to the learning activity. Proposes
curriculum to expand what identity and agency look like in schools
embracing more humanistic pedagogies.

This unique work presents one of the most significant organ failure
condition - cardiocirculatory shock - and the prominent role of
Methylene Blue (MB). Through their extensive experience, the
authors' consider that the lifesaving feature of MB is still
underestimated. For this reason they outline key concepts of MB,
mentioning essential experimental data, yet focusing mainly on its
application in the care of critically ill patients. In an
easy-to-read format, the 18 chapters were organized in a
didactically structured order, distributed in four parts. The first
part introduces the general conceptual aspects and physiology of
the endothelium. The second part presents the particularities of
endothelial dysfunction in different types of shock. Methylene blue
is discussed in detail in the third part. In the fourth part,
particular situations of endothelial dysfunction, such as heart
surgery and organ transplantation, are described. Additionally, the
two complementary subjects of acid-base balance and the therapeutic
use of inhaled nitric oxide are mentioned. Finally, looking for
therapeutic alternatives for what we classify as "vasoplegic
endothelial dysfunction", MB remains promising as an adjuvant to
sympathomimetic amines. The combination of three recently proposed
concepts may be useful in obtaining better results against the high
mortality rates in critically ill patients. These three concepts
are "wide-spectrum vasopressors", vasopressor economy strategies,
and microcirculation protection against the harmful effects of
using high concentrations of amines. This books translational
approach will appeal to a variety of readers within the health
specialties of medicine, biomedicine, physiotherapy, nursing,
odontology, and basic science.

This book covers the topic of discourse and argumentation in
archaeology with an aim to serve the archaeology community. The
book presents discourse and argument analysis approaches and
techniques in an affordable manner and applied to archaeological
situations. It focuses on techniques and approaches that can be
applicable to multiple situations, periods and cultures. The book
begins with an introduction to discourse and argumentation analysis
as a general field and also as an auxiliary technique to
archaeology. The work includes conceptual applications, ranging
from causality, ontological connections, vagueness, social
production of discourse and public debates. The work also devotes a
section to computational approaches and describes the specifics of
some well-known families of algorithms such as lexical processing,
information extraction or sentiment analysis. The conclusion
comments on the future and which reflects on the previous chapters
and discusses how the presented techniques and approaches should be
adapted or improved for easier and more powerful application to
archaeology. Contributing authors bring perspectives from
archaeology, linguistics, and computer science.
