'Well, Sergeant, here we go then', I said. 'Getting our chance at
last of a good old crack at the Boche, eh...?' Ex-infantryman and
reconnaissance officer, author and humorist Patrick Ryan is perhaps
best remembered for this acerbically comic novel - first published
in 1963 and quickly adapted into a 1967 feature film by Richard
Lester, starring Michael Crawford and John Lennon. It is a
satirical 'memoir' of the misadventures of the haphazard and
notably naive Lieutenant Ernest Goodbody and his fellow fighting
men of Twelve Platoon - Sergeant Transom, Corporals Hink, Globe and
Dooley, Private Drogue et al - as they stumble ill-preparedly into
the theatres of World War Two.
Military academies have served youth for more than a century with
proud traditions of producing graduates who are scholars, leaders,
and athletes who adhere to a code of honor and ethical principles
as they take the knowledge, skills, and dispositions gained at
those academies into higher education, the business world, military
service, civic endeavors, and the broader workforce. There is a
current gap and need for research that explores the various
components of a K-20 military school/college education and how
those components successfully produce leaders of character for our
military, civic, academic, and business worlds both in the United
States and abroad. The Handbook of Research on Character and
Leadership Development in Military Schools synthesizes research on
the impact of military academies by providing a singular compendium
of current academic studies on the graduates of military academies
and the communities of which they enter after graduation. The
chapters will explore the academics, leadership, character
development, citizenship, athletics, and other dimensions of both
global and national, and both private and public, military
academies. This book is ideal for current leaders, staffs,
governing board members, and alumni of military academies both in
the United States and internationally along with policymakers,
government officials, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and
students interested in the implications of character and leadership
development on individuals enrolled in or graduated from military
schools.
This book shows connections between oral story listening and
unique, enduring educational effects in and outside of the
classroom. Using scientific studies and interviews, as well as
personal observations from more than thirty years in schools and
libraries, the authors examine learning outcomes from frequent
story listening. Throughout the book, Schatt and Ryan illustrate
that experiencing stories told entirely from memory transforms
individuals and builds community, affecting areas such as reading
comprehension, visualization, focus, flow states, empathy,
attachment, and theory of mind.
Patrick John Ryan was a Roman Catholic priest, bishop and
archbishop in America in very turbulent and challenging times. He
experienced the mass influx of European immigrants, anti-foreigner
and anti-Catholic prejudice, the American Civil War and efforts to
serve the needs of the African Americans and Native Americans.
Ireland prepared him for the life he chose to lead. He encountered
religious discrimination and the penal-law mentality and he
witnessed the Great Famine. Influenced by the accomplishments of
Daniel O'Connell, he began to develop his skills as an orator for
which he was to gain a world-wide reputation.
This book examines the issues and implications that mental
health professionals face when dealing with ageing and older
adults. The book focuses on the biological, psychological and
cultural influences that impact on the work of mental health
practitioners who work with this client group.
Based on current empirical research and evidence-based practical
issues this book explores topics including:
- ageing and dementia
- elder abuse
- caring for older adults
- depression and ageing
- the paradox of ageing
- how older adults are key to the success of future
generations.
Throughout the book the contributors emphasise the notion of
healthy ageing, and the importance and significance of this concept
as part of the life-cycle process. As such Ageing and Older Adult
Mental Health will be key reading not only for mental health
professionals, but also for those involved in policy making for
older adults.
Clinical formulation lies at the heart of how mental health
professionals understand psychological distress. It is the
application of a framework that cohesively integrates scientific
knowledge with the symptoms of distress. In essence, it is the
creation of order to what is often experienced as disorder. The aim
of this book is to bring awareness to the theoretical and practical
opportunities for mental health professionals that exists by using
atypical information when adapting typical formulation models. Each
chapter reflects some variation in how formulation is defined,
conceptualised and practiced, by using information that regularly
materializes from professional encounters but often is omitted from
the formulation of a particular presenting problem. Chapters on
diet and exercise, sleep, spirituality, sexuality and
meaning-making highlight how approaches to formulation can be
extended to provide additional opportunities for intervention for
the client and practitioner. A professional encounter orientated in
the manner proposed will generate a type of formulation that will
raise interesting and testable hypotheses that can assist in
understanding 'stuck' points in therapy, difficulties within the
therapeutic relationship, low motivation or inability to engage in
particular approaches and will assist in devising person-specific
mental health interventions. This book will appeal to clinical
psychologists and psychotherapists in practice and training.

In the four provinces of Ireland there are thirty-two counties.
Each county and its people have their own traditions, beliefs and
folklore - and each one is also inhabited by the Sidhe: an ancient
and magical race. Some believe they are descended from fallen
angels, whilst others say they are the progeny of Celtic deities.
They go by many names: the good folk, the wee folk, the gentle
people and the fey, but are most commonly known as 'the fairies'.
These are not the whimsical fairies of Victorian and Edwardian
picture books. They are feared and revered in equal measure, and
even in the twenty-first century are spoken of in hushed tones. The
fairies are always listening. Storyteller Steve Lally and his wife
singer-songwriter Paula Flynn Lally have compiled this magnificent
collection of magical fairy stories from every county in Ireland.
Filled with unique illustrations that bring these tales to life,
Irish Gothic Fairy Stories will both enthral and terrify readers
for generations to come.

This volume brings together exciting new field data by more than
two dozen Andean scholars who came together to honor their friend,
colleague, and mentor. These new studies cover the enormous
temporal span of Moseley's own work from the Preceramic era to the
Tiwanaku and Moche states to the Inka empire. And, like Moseley's
own studies -- from Maritime Foundations of Andean Civilization to
Chan Chan: The Desert City to Cerro Baul's brewery -- these new
studies involve settlements from all over the Andes -- from the far
northern highlands to the far southern coast. An invaluable
addition to any Andeanist's library, the papers in this book
demonstrate the enormous breadth and influence of Moseley's work
and the vibrant range of exciting new work by his former students
and collaborators in fieldwork.
