An understanding of the social sciences within infection prevention
and control (IPC) is important for those working in health and
social care. This new book, Infection prevention and control: a
social science perspective positions the specialty of IPC as more
than a technical discipline concerned with microbes. It is about
people and their behaviour in context and the book therefore
explores a number of relevant social sciences and their
relationship to IPC across different contexts and cultures. IPC is
relevant to every person who works in, and accesses health care and
it remains a global challenge. Exploring novel approaches and
perspectives that expand our collective horizons in an ever
changing and evolving IPC landscape therefore makes sense. Key

This book presents a variety of perceptions of and perspectives on
infection prevention and control. In doing this, the chapters will
reflect upon challenging and controversial new ways of looking at
infection prevention and control aimed at generating both
discussion and debate as well as practical solutions. With this in
mind, the book will aim not only to challenge the existing status
quo but also push the frontiers of knowledge, thinking and practice
where infection prevention and control is concerned. This is vital
when considered in the light of cross infection rates, the number
of healthcare providers who are being identified by the Care
Quality Commission as falling below acceptable standards of
infection prevention and control and the almost compulsive
persistent non-adherent behaviours of those involved in the
provision of medicine, health, social care and other disciplines
related to caring with regards to the undertaking of safe and
appropriate standards of infection prevention and control. There is
no doubt that this book will be challenging with regards to the
readers' perceptions and perspectives of infection prevention and
control. Where this topic is concerned however, such a challenging
approach is vital if the health, safety and well being of
individuals is to be positively promoted among all those involved
in the health and wellbeing of others.
Infection control is fundamental to delivering effective health and
social care at all levels. However, health and social care
professionals' actual behaviour can sometimes seem intractable to
the most rigorous training and promotion of safe practice -
including even basic hygiene precautions. Many have identified this
problem, but few have addressed why it occurs and how practices can
lastingly be changed. This book reaches beyond a prescriptive
approach to infection control behaviour, examining the psychosocial
forces that affect individual and group behaviours in practice. It
gives a strong theoretical framework for practitioners, supervisors
and managers to reflect upon and challenge behaviour, before
providing practical advice on how to create, supervise and promote
genuinely consistent safe practice. This book aims to challenge
fundamentally the way health and social care professionals,
supervisors and managers approach infection control and hygiene -
and in doing so to dramatically improve the health and safety of
their patients, clients, colleagues and the public.
Ever since its inception, British cinema has been obsessed with
crime and the criminal. One of the first narrative films to be
produced in Britain, the Hepworth's 1905 short "Rescued by Rover,"
was a fast-paced, quick-edited tale of abduction and kidnap, and
the first British sound film, Alfred Hitchcock's "Blackmail"
(1930), centered on murder and criminal guilt. For a genre
seemingly so important to the British cinematic character, there is
little direct theoretical or historical work focused on it. The
Britain of British cinema is often written about in terms of
national history, ethnic diversity, or cultural tradition, yet very
rarely in terms of its criminal tendencies and dark underbelly.
This volume assumes that, to know how British cinema truly works,
it is necessary to pull back the veneer of the costume piece, the
historical drama, and the rom-com and glimpse at what is
underneath. For every "Brief Encounter" (1945) there is a "Brighton
Rock" (2010), for every "Notting Hill "(1999) there is a "Long Good
Friday" (1980).
The New Kingdom of Egypt marks the apogee of military organisation
and preparedness. Beginning the era under foreign occupation, the
Egyptians built up an army to challenge the invaders and liberate
their land. Using the newest battlefield technologies (bows,
chariots and hand weapons) the new pharaohs pushed the frontiers of
the New Kingdom into Syria and Ethiopia. This is the era of Set I,
Ramses II and Thuthmoses III, the greatest military pharaohs in
Egyptian history. This book narrates this incredible rise to power
and then describes in detail the way in which the Egyptian war
machine was structured, how it was supplied, and how it fought. It
considers all aspects, some often neglected, such as campaign
tents, logistics and rations, as well as the design of hand weapons
and bows. Many pieces of kit have been reconstructed for the book,
giving the reader a very immediate sense of what an Egyptian
warrior's equipment looked like. --

Guns N' Roses emerged from Los Angeles in the 1980s to become a
global rock'n'roll phenomenon, selling in total more than 100
million albums. Three decades on, Guns N' Roses are once again
headline news around the world - with the return of iconic
guitarist Slash marking the end of his bitter 20-year feud with
singer Axl Rose. When Guns N' Roses' debut album Appetite For
Destruction was released in 1987, the band were so out of control
that their record company stated: "They'll make it - if they live."
And yet, somehow, they did. Appetite For Destruction became the
biggest selling debut in the history of American music, and songs
such as "Sweet Child O' Mine", "Welcome To The Jungle" and
"Paradise City" became era-defining classics. Known as The Most
Dangerous Band In The World, Guns N' Roses' success continued into
the 1990s with the albums Use Your Illusion I and II, but by the
end of that decade only singer Axl Rose remained from the original
line up. This book follows the complete story of Guns N' Roses: the
highs and lows, the triumphs and failures, the fights, the excess,
and the great music that shook the world. Now, with Axl and Slash
reunited - along with another member of the band's classic line-up,
Duff McKagan - Guns N' Roses are set to make history once again
with one of the biggest tours ever. The story continues...

Orbital 2100 is a science fiction setting for Cepheus Engine and
other Classic 2D6 SF RPGs. It has realistic (TL 9) feel that is set
within our own solar system. The Earth is locked in a Cold War with
the people of Luna. Both face off, 400,000 km apart, threatening
mutual annihilation whilst they compete to colonise the moons of
Jupiter and Saturn. Older colonies such as Mars and Mercury are
independent and caught up in this struggle for solar system
supremacy. Spacecraft use nuclear thermal rockets and create
gravity by spinning pods or centrifuges, this is spaceflight as
envisaged today! In keeping with the near-future and hard-science
fiction themes, role-playing campaigns focus on real people doing
real jobs. The game has rules, technology and advice to allow
scenarios based around deep space haulage, asteroid mining,
salvage, rescue and exploration. Requires the use of the Cepheus
Engine or a 2D6 SF rules-set. Visit Zozer Games at

Guattari Reframed presents a timely and urgent rehabilitation of
one of the twentieth century's most engaged and engaging cultural
philosophers. Best known as an activist and practising
psychiatrist, Guattari's work is increasingly understood as both
eerily prescient and vital in the context of contemporary culture.
Employing the language of visual culture and concrete examples
drawn from it, this book introduces and reassesses the major
concepts developed throughout Guattari's writings and his call to
transform the deadening homogeneity of contemporary existence into
the 'universe of creative enchantments'. Paul Elliott asserts the
significance of Guattari as a revolutionary philosopher and
cultural theorist, and invites the reader to transform both their
understanding of his work and their lives through his ideas.
A rhetorical examination of the rise of populist conservatism. I
The People: The Rhetoric of Conservative Populism in the United
States examines a variety of texts-ranging from speeches and
campaign advertisements to news reports and political pamphlets-to
outline the populist character of conservatism in the United
States. Paul Elliott Johnson focuses on key inflection points in
the development of populist conservatism, including its
manifestation in the racially charged presidential election of
1964, its consolidation at the height of Ronald Reagan's reelection
campaign in 1984, and its character in successive moments that saw
its fortunes wax and wane, including 1994, the Obama era, and the
rise of Donald J. Trump. theorizing conservative populism as a
rhetorical form, Johnson advances scholarship about populism away
from a binary ideological framework while offering a useful lens
for contextualizing scholarship on American conservatism. I The
People emphasizes that the populist roots of conservative hegemony
exercise a powerful constraining force on conservative
intellectuals, whose power to shape and control the movement to
which they belong is circumscribed by the form of its public-facing
appeals. The study also reframes scholarly understandings of the
conservative tradition's seeming multiplicity, especially the
tendency to suggest an abiding conservative unease regarding
capitalism, showing how racist hostility underwrote a compromise
with an increasingly economized understanding of humanity. Johnson
also contests the narrative that conservatives learned to practice
identity politics from social progressives. From the beginning,
conservatism's public vernacular was a white and masculine identity
politics reliant on a rhetoric of victimhood, whether critiquing
the liberal Cold War consensus or President Barack Obama.
