Als am 4. August England dem Deutschen Reich den Krieg erklarte, da
musste sich jedem, der einen tieferen Ein blick in unser
Wirtschaftsleben hat, die Frage aufdrangen, ob wir in der Lage
seien, abgeschnitten von unserer gewaltigen Einfuhr an Nahrungs-
und Futtermitteln, auch wahrend eines sehr langen Krieges
durchzuhalten. Bei mir nahm die Frage die besondere Gestalt an: was
konnen wir tun? konnen wir nicht vielleicht durch eine zielbewusste
Umgestaltung unserer Gutererzeugung und Lebenshaltung es fertig
bringen, unab hangig vom Ausland, sozusagen als isolierter Staat,
beliebig lange zu wirtschaften? Aber. indem ich mir diese grosse
Frage vorlegte, empfand ich zugleich auf das tiefste, wie unmoglich
es fur irgend einen einzelnen ist, sie genau und erschopfend zu
beantworten. Der Stoff des menschlichen Wissens ist immer mehr an
gewachsen. Rettungslos scheinen wir heute einem von zwei Ubeln
verfallen zu sein: engbegrenztem, hilflosem Spezialistentum oder
oberflachlicher Vielwisserei. Ein Mittel, um beiden zu ent gehen,
ist gemeinsame Arbeit, nicht freilich in der nur zu ver breiteten
Art, dass Vertreter verschiedener Facher einen Kreis von Fragen
ausserlich zur Bearbeitung unter sich verteilen, wobei schliesslich
alles noch auf eine Steigerung und Verschlimmerung des
Spezialistentums hinauslauft, sondern im Sinne eines wirk lichen
Mit-und Zusammenarbeitens, bei dem jeder sich in del1 Gedankenkreis
der anderen einlebt, bis schliesslich, wie von einem Menschen
geschaffen, der das Wissen aller vereinigt, ein Werk aus einem
Gusse vorliegt."

alternatively as opposing authority in the conduct of human
relations. Proponents of anarchism (known as " anarchists")
advocate stateless societies based on non-hierarchical voluntary
associations.
