Is South Africa more equitable now than in 1994? How can domestic violence be explained? How are we as individuals shaped by larger structures, forces and institutions? Why is the environment important for society? Sociology: A Comprehensive South African Introduction provides a comprehensive introduction to the sociological theories and themes commonly taught in undergraduate courses. The book is divided into five broad sections: the foundations of sociology; the individual in society; the institutions in society; the challenges for society; and sociology in context. Each chapter addresses key issues, topics and debates in sociology today, and uses contemporary and current South African case studies to make the material relevant and meaningful to students. Chapter introductions serve as a narrative linking and providing cross-references to material covered in other chapters, where appropriate. Key Features/ benefits:
Sociology has been developed for the South African sociology student. It combines recent, contemporary and relevant theory, debates, data and topics with illustrative case studies and practices. This combination serves to make learning relevant and engaging for the South African students.

As one of the first sectors affected by the current phase of crisis in capital accumulation, the automobile industry has had much to learn and now has much to teach. A recognition of the great diversity of forms of adaptation introduced to face the uncertainties of the market, lead to the formation of GERPISA and its international programme of research on the emergence of new industrial models. This book, a product of that research, is a valuable and timely insight into the innovations and adjustments of some of the major vehicular manufacturers and through them into the future of industry as a whole.
The promotion of workplace partnership in the high performance workplace has become central to policy debates on the 'modernization' of employment relations in British industry. This book provides critical insights into the dynamics of partnership by way of in-depth case studies of employee experience in an under-researched industry noted for its high concentrations of skilled workers and graduates. Drawing on rich interview and questionnaire data, the authors highlight considerable conflicts of interest in the development of partnership that derive from the competitive capitalist environment in which management strategies operate.

Since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, the image projected of Northern Ireland in the mainstream media is frequently that of a newly prosperous, modern, post-conflict society - a rare example of a successful peace process. Promoted as a great place to live and work, the garden seemed to be getting rosier by the day, that is until the Stormont Assembly collapsed in 2017. Written to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of the GFA, this book argues that the seeds of recent problems were sown in the 1998 agreement. The fiasco of a Renewable Heating Incentive that overpaid participants, the lingering whiff of corruption, communities in crisis and growing poverty are all symptoms of the inherent failings of the supposed settlement. Current difficulties are more than teething problems arising from the transition from war to peace and neo-liberalism; they're the first instalment of a deeper crisis in a northern Irish state and society, which has never properly addressed the corrosive nature of sectarianism. Rather than ridding Northern Ireland of sectarianism, neo-liberalism, operating in the absence of armed conflict, has been able to accommodate and, in some instances, create a new form of sectarianism. The GFA has led to a profound democratic deficit. This book focuses on the nature of the North's new sectarian political class who are the principal beneficiaries of the GFA, but attention is also drawn to the labour movement, the plight of precarious and migrant workers, and the undermining of third sector autonomy. Behind the latter is the continuing suffering within communities still impacted by the long period of armed conflict and the evolution of republicanism and Unionism-Loyalism.
