The laws of rugby are as extensive as they are confusing, their
nuances and interpretations argued over relentlessly by rugby fans
around the world and virtually impenetrable to those who are new to
the game. In an effort to provide some much-needed clarity, Paul
Williams takes an irreverent, hilarious, p*ss-taking tour through
the labyrinth that is rugby's rule book - or, for the pedantic,
rugby's law book. Hilarious, off-beat and (surprisingly)
insightful, this is the perfect gift for rugby fans all around the
world.
Sometimes you can't choose your own battles. A memoir of coming of age in Rhodesia explores the author's experiences as a young conscript caught up in the bush war of the late 1970s.
This is a compelling, touching and often humorous account of growing up in a straitlaced, racist society and the absurdity of fighting for a dying regime. The ugliness of the conflict, the trauma of transformation, the agonies of conscience of the writer, the beauty of the landscape: all are captured here in brilliant detail.
Threading through the narrative is the story of Williams’ obsessive infatuation with the enigmatic, sharp-tongued Bianca Pennefather, who leads him on a painful emotional and spiritual journey. Looming over this fragile world is the grotesque experience of the battlefield, where young soldiers like Paul Williams inexorably shed their illusions and lost their youth.

In Kuala Lumpur, a dropout British spy stumbles upon a secret
meeting between a group of men who are planning a cataclysmic
attack on Western society. In Mogadishu, a burned-out mercenary is
approached with an offer to cross over to a new job in the largest
terrorism organization in the world. In Washington, a talented, but
overworked, intelligence agent tries to make sense of a string of
suspicious, but apparently unrelated, incidents. In London, the
embattled allied intelligence services try to piece together what
it all means. Thus, Paul Williams sets the stage for his
provocative thriller, The Bam Memorandum. Meticulously researched
facts are interwoven in a plot that leads the reader across four
continents, as the British and American intelligence agencies
combine their resources in an effort to understand the gravity of
the threat they face, in a race against time to prevent a doomsday
scenario. The action extends from the mountains of Malaysia to the
convention halls of Chicago; from the Sydney Harbor Bridge to the
London Eye, and from the corridors of power in Washington to the
center of government in Europe, invisibly mixing fact and fiction
as it races to its conclusion, high above the streets of Antwerp.
As Vern reflects on a past he thought he knew he unearths some
unexpected truths, discovering that the most significant and
valuable things in life are sometimes those with no beauty or value
at all...the bullet that robbed him of his best friend...the medals
that stir his memories of two happy and haunting years in the Far
East...the locket that hides a picture of family heartache...and a
jagged shard of bombsite shrapnel that makes everything right
again.

Understanding Peacekeeping provides a comprehensive and up to date
introduction to the theory, practice and politics of contemporary
peacekeeping. It evaluates the changing characteristics of the
contemporary environment in which peacekeepers operate, what role
peacekeeping plays in wider processes of global politics, the
growing impact of non-state actors, and the major challenges facing
peacekeepers in the future. Drawing on a wide range of historical
and contemporary case studies, including: Afghanistan; Cambodia,
Cyprus; the Democratic Republic of Congo; East Timor; El Salvador;
Haiti, Liberia; Rwanda; Sierra Leone; Somalia; and the former
Yugoslavia, this book develops an original conceptual framework to
chart the evolution of the role of peacekeeping in global politics,
and highlights the unique characteristics of different types of
peacekeeping operations. Part 1 examines concepts and issues
related to peacekeeping in global politics. Part 2 charts the
historical development of peacekeeping from 1945 to the present. In
Part 3, separate chapters are devoted to different types of
peacekeeping operations: traditional peacekeeping; managing
transition; wider peacekeeping; peace enforcement; and peace
support operations. Part 4 looks forward and examines developments
in global politics that are presenting serious challenges to the
concept and practice of peacekeeping, namely, globalization, the
privatization of security, preventing violent conflict, and the
establishment of protectorates. Understanding Peacekeeping will be
essential reading for students and scholars of peace and conflict
studies, security studies, and international relations.
"The most infectiously enthusiastic introduction to Dylan yet. A
chronological study of Dylan's recorded performances, rather than
just his music or lyrics, it convincingly argues that this is where
his true genius lies."--David Sexton, "Times Literary Supplement."
Written in Williams' "warm, relaxed, chatty style" ("The New York
Times"), this book is a veritable portable jukebox of rock and roll
and the stories behind the songs. "(Williams is) one of the most
original thinkers and writers working within the dimension of rock.
His ideas are fresh, fierce, and singularly alive."--"Fusion."

This concise yet comprehensive study explores innovative practice
in the novel and, from the perspective of creative writing, the
astonishing resilience of the novel form. It offers a practical
guide to the many possibilities available to the writer of the
novel, with each chapter offering exercises to encourage innovation
and to expand the creative writer's narrative skills. Beginning
with early iterations of the novel in the 17th century, this book
follows the evocation of innovation in the novel through Realism,
Modernism, Postmodernism and into today's dizzying array of digital
and interactive possibilities. While guiding the reader through the
possibilities available (in both genre and literary fiction), this
book encourages both aspiring and established writers to produce
novels with imagination, playfulness and gravitas. Dynamic and
interactive, this text is distinctive in offering a grounding in
the literary history of the novel, while also equipping readers to
write in the form themselves. It is an essential resource for any
student of creative writing, or anyone with an interest in writing
their own novel.
Drawing on years of experience of writing, teaching and publishing,
this book offers essential tools for writers interested in honing
their craft. Whether you're a poet, non-fiction writer, novelist,
journalist, student or simply a lover of words, it will take you on
an exciting and challenging journey to becoming a sophisticated
writer. As in the learning of any true craft or art, first the
focus is on specific skills, then on consolidating those skills,
which by the end will be innate. Through a variety of exercises and
freewriting prompts, Playing with Words will help you develop your
writing, trying out new styles and approaches along the way. Use
this book in a class, in a group, or alone in a writer's attic.
"Anything Bob Dylan sings--and any way he chooses to sing it--is
worth hearing. Anything Paul Williams writes about Bob Dylan--and
always in his wonderfully unpretentious, conversational and
heartfelt manner--is worth reading. "Performing Artist" immediately
enters the canon as one of the few necessary books on Bob
Dylan."--Jonathan Cott, contributing editor, "Rolling Stone."
Today's project manager has more to manage than just project scope,
deliverables, communications and teams. They are also expected to
manage large volumes of project-related data. And the expectation
goes beyond just managing the data. It extends into creating great
visualizations that allow stakeholders to fully digest that large
volume of data in a manner that is quick, effective and clear. They
are also expected to serve as facilitators in the use of visual
thinking tools as a method for working through project issues,
risks and problems. These new expectations require new skills. The
era of multi-page, text-based project status reporting is over. The
era of visual project management is here. Time to "skill up!"
This insightful and beautifully written work explores nonlinear
processes of recovery of the loss of Self. The inherent healing
power of hard-earned, wholehearted self-acceptance is conceived
through the authority of tenderness. The book is the final volume
in The Fifth Principle trilogy (the second book being Scum), which
chronicled, through the course of one boy's lifetime, the methods
of a mind which is not a mind, in its efforts to prevail under
oppressive circumstances. The Authority of Tenderness comes at the
end of the journey, is written by the adult self of the child, and
uses poetic vignettes, references to foundational psychoanalytic
literature and analyses of critical treatment situations to convey
the experiences of someone who has been both patient and analyst.
The book offers a vivid psychotherapeutic perspective for
clinicians, trainees, students and general readers alike.
One of the outstanding accounting theoreticians of the twentieth
century, Carl Thomas Devine exhibited a breadth and depth of
knowledge few in the field of accounting have equalled. This book
collects together eight previously unpublished essays on accounting
theory written by Professor Devine. Professor Devine passed away in
1998, prior to the significant scandals that have plagued
accounting and business since the collapse of Enron and Arthur
Andersen. Many of the essays collected here are particularly
important given these events. The first three essays are devoted to
ethics and provide profound insights into the importance of a
profession's ethical presuppositions. The book then presents
essays, which provide a critical examination of the relevance of
hermeneutics and deconstruction to an understanding of accounting
practice and an analysis of the academic 'game' particularly with
respect to Professor Devine's experiences in the Florida university
system. The final essay in the volume is devoted to a critique of
rational choice theory applications in accounting. Revisiting and
building upon themes developed in earlier work, this collection of
essays will be essential reading for accounting historians,
accounting theoreticians and all those interested in the work of
Carl Thomas Devine.
The primary objective underlying the Handbook on Modelling for
Discrete Optimization is to demonstrate and detail the pervasive
nature of Discrete Optimisation. While its applications cut across
an wide range of activities, many of the applications are only
known to specialists. The aim of this handbook is to correct this.
It has long been recognized that modelling is a critically
important mathematical activity in designing algorithms for solving
these discrete optimization problems. Nevertheless solving the
resultant models is also often far from straightforward. In recent
years, it has become possible to solve many large-scale discrete
optimization problems. However, some problems remain a challenge,
even though advances in mathematical methods, hardware, and
software technology have pushed the frontiers forward. This
handbook couples the difficult, critical-thinking aspects of
mathematical modeling with the hot area of discrete optimization.
It will be done in an academic handbook treatment outlining the
state-of-the-art for researchers across the domains of the Computer
Science, Math Programming, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, and
Operations Research. Computer Science, and Combinatorics.
