Designed to encourage critical thinking about history, the Major Problems in American History series introduces students to both primary sources and analytical essays on important topics in U.S. history. This reader serves as the primary anthology for the Post-1945 U.S. History course, Comprehensive topical coverage includes the Cold War; the cultural and political movements of the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s; Vietnam; the return of conservatism; globalization; life in the new information age; the post-Cold War era; and race and ethnicity. The Fourth Edition extends its consideration of the period since the 1960s by adding two entirely new chapters and substantially reconfiguring others. In this way, this edition devotes far more attention to the 1970s, a period that has received especially notable scholarly scrutiny in the last few years, and to the period since the end of the Cold War. Key pedagogical elements of the Major Problems format have been retained: chapter introductions, headnotes, and suggested readings.

She Didn't Tell (Paperback): Paula Baker She Didn't Tell (Paperback)
Paula Baker
R426 Discovery Miles 4 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

BreeAnna Barton was born right after WWII to loving parents and was the center of their world. Her life began as ordinary as the families of the hit TV shows during the 50's and 60's. By the time she was three years old however, a drastic change was beginning to take place in her secure little world. Bree wanted so much to be a normal, happy child and teenager but the word "normal" didn't seem to exist for her. Abused, time and again, both physically and mentally until she was eighteen years old, there seemed to be nothing but black clouds on her horizon. She rose each time with another ray of hope and strong determination, only to be beaten back down. Outsiders turn their heads as the brutality that takes place inside her home stays within those walls, never to be discussed or shared by anyone involved. The rainbow was gradually fading from the clear blue sky of her dreams. As Bree's story unfolds, you'll hold your breath as she rides along with the changing winds, wanting to encourage her as she fiercely attempts to fight back against her attackers. She is courageous, determined, and through it all, still has the capacity to love. But, just how long and to what extent can these traits carry her? How much pain and suffering will this diminutive child's body be able to endure? Tiny bits of happiness are dashed as she rounds each corner, her journey reaching it's final destination.........

Paula Baker takes Bree's journey to another level in this second book. In 'She Didn't Tell', BreeAnna Barton suffered the atrocities of both physical and sexual abuse throughout her first eighteen years of life. Memories And a Cedar Chest will keep you enthralled and turning pages as Bree's story unfolds; the violence appears to be never-ending. As a young adult she believed she had left the ugly past behind; a belief that is quickly shattered by someone she trusts and allows herself fall in love with. Small rays of sunshine and hope appear from time to time, but the raging black storms and the memories continue to haunt her. At her core is a sense of strength and a powerful will to survive, but how far can these attributes carry her? She begins to think it's best to give in and lead the passive life her aggressors have suggested; but sheer determination forces her to reconsider. Will the consequences be worth the battle? If she wins the battle, will the demons of the past ever truly be gone? This is a story of life; victims and survivors, winners and losers, those loved and unloved. Only Bree can reveal the category that best describes her sordid life and her struggle to overcome.

Money and Politics (Paperback): Paula Baker Money and Politics (Paperback)
Paula Baker
R1,063 Discovery Miles 10 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

That large financial contributions distort American politics and American democracy is an idea that stands as a truism in political debate. It has fired reform movements; it has inspired round after round of efforts to limit who can give to candidates and parties, how much they can give, and how much campaigns can spend. The laws have generated constitutional arguments about free speech, a still inconclusive literature on whether contributions actually shape policy, and a great deal of work for lawyers and financial analysts who monitor compliance. In the wake of Enron's collapse and subsequent revelations about that corporation's involvement with policy makers, the public's attention has once again focused on the role that money plays in politics. Little of the scholarly work (and none of the legal work) is historical. Yet history can shed light on the long-running debate about the impact of money on politics and what, if anything, are plausible policy options.

This collection of original essays is a step in that direction. The chapters cover episodes from the early nineteenth century through the 1970s. They illustrate how deep concern about money in politics runs--and how the definition of the problem has changed over time. Through the nineteenth century, the "spoils system" in which party loyalists gained reward for their efforts appeared to be the evil that blocked responsive parties and honest public administration. Party war chests that brought howls of complaint (and great exaggeration) seemed quaint by the middle of the twentieth century. In part because reform had weakened the parties and campaigns required consultants' skills in coordination and in part because television advertising was so expensive, the cost of campaigns rose. Candidates griped and policy entrepreneurs worked out possible solutions, which were in place before the Watergate scandal focused public attention on campaign finance. In the history of campaign-finance reform, one generation's solutions have tended to become another's problem. Contributors to the volume are Paula Baker, Robert Mutch, Mark Wahlgren Summers, and Julian E. Zelizer.

R2,066 Discovery Miles 20 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

America's Promise is a concise, highly readable introduction to American History. Designed to clearly explain major themes and events, it also captures the rich and often amusing character of the American people. The strong narrative emphasizes public life and how individuals constructed public structures in which they lived and worked. Including the latest scholarship in social, cultural, and political history, the work integrates the history and importance of women and minorities. To aid students in learning and reviewing, each chapter begins with a preview of the main ideas that will be discussed and ends with a conclusion that reinforces the key concepts. Rather than being simply declaratory signposts, section headings highlight main ideas and help carry along the narrative. A glossary defines main terms, and a timeline helps students keep track of events. Selected readings are also included to encourage further reading and study. Finally, carefully selected illustrations and maps portray, pinpoint, and illuminate important episodes in American history. The most concise and competitively priced book available, America's Promise is a breath of fresh air in the introductory market.

Election 2008 made American history, but it was also the product of American history. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Sarah Palin smashed through some of the most enduring barriers to high political office, but their exceptional candidacies did not come out of nowhere. In these timely and accessible essays, a distinguished group of historians explores how the candidates both challenged and reinforced historic stereotypes of race and sex while echoing familiar themes in American politics and exploiting new digital technologies. Contributors include Kathryn Kish Sklar on Clinton's gender masquerade; Tiffany Ruby Patterson on the politics of black anger; Mitch Kachun on Michelle Obama and stereotypes about black women's bodies; Glenda E. Gilmore on black women's century of effort to expand political opportunities for African Americans; Tera W. Hunter on the lost legacy of Shirley Chisholm; Susan M. Hartmann on why the U.S. has not yet followed western democracies in electing a female head of state; Melanie Gustafson on Palin and the political traditions of the American West; Ronald Formisano on the populist resurgence in 2008; Paula Baker on how digital technologies threaten the secret ballot; Catherine E. Rymph on Palin's distinctive brand of political feminism; and Elisabeth I. Perry on the new look of American leadership.
