This book contributes to the debate on the decoupling of emerging
economies from the advanced economies with a new, empirical
investigation approach. Taking counterfactual experiments performed
using a time-varying panel VAR model, the author argues that over
the last thirty years, emerging economies have become less
vulnerable to shocks spreading from advanced economies. This
resilience to external shocks has changed in a non-progressive
manner over time, with phases of greater resilience followed by
others of lower resilience and vice versa. This research outlines
its wave-like path and presents new results that contribute to the
discussion.
This monograph offers a comprehensive study of the topos of the
malmariee or the unhappily married woman within the
thirteenth-century motet repertory, a vocal genre characterized by
several different texts sounding simultaneously over a foundational
Latin chant. Part I examines the malmariee motets from three
vantage points: (1) in light of contemporaneous canonist views on
marriage; (2) to what degree the French malmariee texts in the
upper voices treat the messages inherent in the underlying Latin
chant through parody and/or allegory; and (3) interactions among
upper-voice texts that invite additional interpretations focused on
gender issues. Part II investigates the transmission profile of the
motets, as well as of their refrains, revealing not only
intertextual refrain usage between the motets and other genres, but
also a significant number of shared refrains between malmariee
motets and other motets. Part II furthermore offers insights on the
chronology of composition within a given intertextual refrain
nexus, and examines how a refrain's meaning can change in a new
context. Finally, based on the transmission profile, Part II argues
for a lively interest in the topos in the 1270s and 1280s, both
through composition of new motets and compilation of earlier ones,
with Paris and Arras playing a prominent role.
Most of the world knows Uruguay only for its soccer team, or its
vaunted title as the "Switzerland of South America," an enduring
moniker given to the country for its earlier social welfare
policies and relative stability. Even many scholarly narratives of
Latin America fail to integrate the country into historical
accounts, reducing the country to, as one historian has explained,
"a periphery within the periphery that is Latin America." This
volume challenges that characterization, taking one of the most
innovative small states in the region and analyzing its
transnational influence on the world. Uruguay in Transnational
Perspective takes a broad look at the countryâs
three-hundred-year history, connecting imperial practices and
resistance, Afro-Latin movements, and feminist firebrands, among
others to understand how the country and its citizens have
influenced and shaped regional and global historical narratives in
a way that has thus far been overlooked. With a true collaboration
between scholars of the Global North and Global South, the volume
is both transnational in its scholarly focus and its production.
Its interdisciplinary nature offers a broad range of perspectives
from leading scholars in the field to re-evaluate Uruguayâs
impact on the global stage.

Semiotic Theory of Learning asks what learning is and what brings
it about, challenging the hegemony of psychological and
sociological constructions of learning in order to develop a
burgeoning literature in semiotics as an educational foundation.
Drawing on theoretical research and its application in empirical
studies, the book attempts to avoid the problematization of the
distinction between theory and practice in semiotics. It covers
topics such as signs, significance and semiosis; the ontology of
learning; the limits of learning; ecosemiotics; ecology and
sexuality. The book is written by five of the key figures in the
semiotics field, each committed to the belief that living is a
process of interaction through acts of signification with a
signifying environment. While the authors are agreed on the value
of semiotic frameworks, the book aims not to present an entirely
coherent line in every respect, but rather to reflect ongoing
scholarship and debates in the area. In light of this, the book
offers a range of possible interpretations of major semiotic
theorists, unsettling assumptions while offering a fresh, and still
developing, series of perspectives on learning from academics
grounded in semiotics. Semiotic Theory of Learning is a timely and
valuable text that will be of great interest to academics,
researchers and postgraduates working in the fields of educational
studies, semiotics, psychology, philosophy, applied linguistics and
media studies.
Slated as 'the next big thing in tech', augmented reality promises
to take the screen out of our hands and wrap it around the world
via 'smart spectacles'. As a pervasive, invisible interface between
the world and our senses, AR offers unparalleled capacity to reveal
hidden digital depths, but it also comes at a cost to our privacy,
our property, and our reality. In this crucial and provocative
book, Mark Pesce draws on over thirty years' experience to offer
the first mainstream exploration of augmented reality. He discusses
the exciting and beneficial features of AR as well as the issues
and risks raised by this still-emerging technology - a technology
that moulds us by shaping what we see and hear. Augmented Reality
is essential reading for anyone interested in the growing influence
of this impressive but deeply concerning technology. As the book
reveals, reality - once augmented - will never be the same.
The Story of Attila in Prose is the first critical edition and
translation of the thirteenth century Franco-Italian prose text the
Estoire d'Atile en prose. Preserved in two anonymous and untitled
manuscripts composed between the last quarter of the thirteenth
century and the beginning of the fourteenth century, the story
recounts the fictional founding of Venice after the invasion of
Aquileia by Attila the Hun. The manuscripts, located in Zagreb and
Venice, detail Attila's pagan mother, her union with a dog, and his
feral birth, as well as his unusual death during a chess match and
the origins of the Holy Grail. This edition and translation are
based on the Zagreb manuscript, which was only recently discovered.
The book includes a full critical apparatus containing rejected
readings and variants from the Venetian manuscript, and a thorough
introduction that discusses the literary value of the text, its
possible sources, and its influence on later literature. It is
important reading for both historians of medieval Europe and
literary critics.
First full comprehensive guide to one of the most important genres
of music in the Middle Ages. Motets constitute the most important
polyphonic genre of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
Moreover, these compositions are intrinsically involved in the
early development of polyphony. This volume - the first to be
devotedexclusively to medieval motets - aims to provide a
comprehensive guide to them, from a number of different disciplines
and perspectives. It addresses crucial matters such as how the
motet developed; the rich interplay of musical, poetic, and
intertextual modes of meaning specific to the genre; and the
changing social and historical circumstances surrounding motets in
medieval France, England, and Italy. It also seeks to question many
traditional assumptions and received opinions in the area. The
first part of the book considers core concepts in motet
scholarship: issues of genre, relationships between the motet and
other musico-poetic forms, tenor organization, isorhythm,
notational development, social functions, and manuscript layout.
This is followed by a series of individual case studies which look
in detail at a variety of specific pieces, compositional
techniques, collections, and subgenres.

Liszt's Final Decade reveals in the composer's own words to his
confidantes Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein and Olga von Meyendorff
how he resolved his conflicted self-image as a celebrated performer
but underappreciated composer. Toward the end of his life Franz
Liszt maintained extensive correspondence with two women who were
at the time his closest confidantes, Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein
and Olga von Meyendorff. Liszt wrote to them regularly, expressing
his intimate feelings about personal and career events and his
conflicted self-image as a celebrated performer but
underappreciated composer. Absent a diary, the letters offer the
most direct avenue into Liszt's psyche in hisfinal years. Liszt's
Final Decade explores through these letters the mind and music of
one of the nineteenth century's most popular musicians, providing
insight into Liszt's melancholia in his last years and his struggle
to gain recognition for his music yet avoid criticism. The exchange
indicates that Liszt ultimately resolved his inner conflict through
a personally constructed Christian moral philosophy that embraced
positive resignation to suffering, compassionate love, and trust in
a just reward to come. The book also examines how Liszt's late
sacred compositions affirm the yielding of suffering to joy and
hope. Significantly, Liszt viewed these works, commonly overlooked
today, as a major part of his compositional legacy. This volume
thus challenges the idea of a single "late" Lisztian style and the
notion that despair overwhelmed the composer in his final years. We
are pleased to announce that Liszt's Final Decade is the winner of
the 2017 Alan Walker Book Award, given by the American Liszt
Society. Dolores Pesce is the Avis Blewett Professor of Music in
Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.
The definitive volume on Gaetano Pesce's incomparable life and
career, as told in the iconoclastic artist-designer's own words. In
a category all his own, Gaetano Pesce is widely considered one of
the most important, and elusive, creative figures of the last half
century. Bridging numerous key art and design movements, while
never truly belonging to any of them, Pesce's singular practice has
remained steadfastly provocative, defying widely held notions of
convention, utility, and good taste. Yet as New York magazine
demonstrated in its feature on the 'Pope of Gloop' upon the opening
of his recent solo show at acclaimed gallery Salon 94, the world
has arguably caught up to Gaetano Pesce. Now in his eighth decade,
Pesce recounts his life and career to renowned design curator and
critic Glenn Adamson, generating discussion conducted over several
years that is as informative as it is surprising. Discussing his
incomparable decades-long career which includes the creation of the
classic articles of his UP series, the effusively postmodern design
for Chiat/Day's headquarters, and countless works of furniture and
design objects in his signature poured resin - Pesce shares his
wide-ranging thoughts on art, design, and architecture. Always
forward-looking, Pesce's process of reinterpreting and transforming
the premises of modern design to create idiosyncratic and deeply
personal works beat a path for multidisciplinary design practice
seen everywhere today. Particularly in his exploration of
introducing imperfections, if not 'defects' into the traditionally
uniform systems of mass fabrication, Pesce turns out to be much
more of a prophet of modern design than a curious detractor.
Gaetano Pesce: The Complete Incoherence is the long overdue summary
of an irreverent, wildly inventive career that should inspire
practitioners across all creative disciplines.
In the age of "complex Tv", of social networking and massive
consumption of transmedia narratives, a myriad short-lived
phenomena surround films and TV programs raising questions about
the endurance of a fictional world and other mediatized discourse
over a long arc of time. The life of media products can change
direction depending on the variability of paratextual materials and
activities such as online commentaries and forums, promos and
trailers, disposable merchandise and gadgets, grassroots video
production, archives, and gaming. This book examines the tension
between permanence and obsolescence in the production and
experience of media byproducts analysing the affections and
meanings they convey and uncovering the machineries of their
persistence or disposal. Paratexts, which have long been considered
only ancillary to a central text, interfere instead with textual
politics by influencing the viewers' fidelity (or infidelity) to a
product and affecting a fictional world's "life expectancy".
Scholars in the fields of film studies, media studies, memory and
cultural studies are here called to observe these byproducts'
temporalities (their short form and/or long temporal extention,
their nostalgic politics or future projections) and assess their
increasing influence on our use of the past and present, on our
temporal experience, and, consequently, on our social and political
self-positioning through the media.
Now in a fully revised and updated 6th edition, reflecting changes
in legislation and cutting-edge research, this is a complete
introduction to adapted physical education, from the underpinning
science to practical teaching strategies and program design. The
book covers a broader range of disabilities, developmental
disorders, and health conditions than any other textbook and
includes brand new material on developmental coordination disorders
and cognitive development. Full of teaching and coaching strategies
and techniques, it introduces scientific fundamentals, key
legislation, and best practice in designing effective programs. It
encourages the reader to consider the individual before the
disability and to focus on what learners can do rather than what
they can't. This is an essential reference for teachers, coaches,
or exercise professionals working with children with disabilities.
It is also an invaluable resource for undergraduate or postgraduate
students of adapted physical education, kinesiology, physical
education, physical therapy, exercise science, athletic training,
or sports coaching. The new edition features updated online
resources, including PowerPoint slides, web links, an example
syllabus, and quizzes.

First established in August 1988, the Transaction Processing
Performance Council (TPC) has shaped the landscape of modern
transaction processing and database benchmarks over two decades.
Now, the world is in the midst of an extraordinary information
explosion led by rapid growth in the use of the Internet and
connected devices. Both user-generated data and enterprise data
levels continue to grow ex- nentially. With substantial
technological breakthroughs, Moore's law will continue for at least
a decade, and the data storage capacities and data transfer speeds
will continue to increase exponentially. These have challenged
industry experts and researchers to develop innovative techniques
to evaluate and benchmark both hardware and software technologies.
As a result, the TPC held its First Conference on Performance
Evaluation and Benchmarking (TPCTC 2009) on August 24 in Lyon,
France in conjunction with the 35th International Conference on
Very Large Data Bases (VLDB 2009). TPCTC 2009 provided industry
experts and researchers with a forum to present and debate novel
ideas and methodologies in performance evaluation, measurement and
characteri- tion for 2010 and beyond. This book contains the
proceedings of this conference, including 16 papers and keynote
papers from Michael Stonebraker and Karl Huppler.
