The spectrum of available treatment options for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is matched by the spectrum of disease severity, and with up to 90 per cent of men in their 80s suffering from BPH to some extent, it is imperative that patients are offered the full range of options to manage the disease. Pharmacologic therapies available for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to BPH include alpha-adrenoceptor antagonists, such as terazosin, doxazosin, alfuzosin and tamsulosin, and the 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, finasteride and dutasteride. Other strategies, such as plant-derived medication or watchful waiting, are applied to varying extents. Derived from the benchmark title on BPH - the Textbook of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, 2nd edition - this well written and highly illustrated guide covers all these therapies and presents physicians with all they need to know to successfully manage the disease.

Cancer Mapping (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989): Peter Boyle, Calum S. Muir, Ekkehard Grundmann Cancer Mapping (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989)

The preceding decade has seen the production of many cancer at lases. As with other techniques of descriptive epidemiology, these atlases have proved valuable in identifying areas for further re sear~h employing the methods of analytical epidemiology. How ever, the various cancer atlases produceq to date have failed to pro vide a common format of presentation, which has limited their comparability and frustrated in a large measure any attempt to compare risks across national boundaries, boundaries which in terms of environmental exposures may have little meaning. In this volume, many features of cancer atlases are presented and there are discussions on the areas where moves towards standardization could greatly increase the utility of the finished product. In contrast to topographic maps, i. e., representations of natural and man-made features on the surface of the earth, thematic maps concentrate on displaying the geographical occurrence and varia tion of a single phenomenon - the "theme" of the map. The link between thematic and base mapping is rather strong as the themat ic information to be depicted is of greater value if displayed on an accurate base map. Further, the thematic map generally uses statis tical data which are frequently related to internal administrative boundaries for enumeration. The major reason for constructing a thematic map is to discover the spatial structure of the theme of the map and to then relate the structure to some aspects of the under lying environment.

Alcohol has always been an issue in public health but it is currently assuming increasing importance as a cause of disease and premature death worldwide. Alcohol: Science, Policy, and Public Health provides an interdisciplinary source of information that links together, the usually separate fields of, science, policy, and public health. This comprehensive volume highlights the importance of bringing scientific knowledge to bear in order to strengthen and develop alcohol public policy. The book looks at the historical evolution of alcohol consumption in society, key early studies of alcohol and disease, and the cultural and social aspects of alcohol consumption. It then goes on to cover the chemistry and biology of alcohol, patterns of consumption, gender and age-related issues, alcohol and injury, alcohol and cancer and non-malignant disease, and various current therapeutic aspects. The book concludes with a section on alcohol policy, looking at issues of poverty, the availability of alcohol and alcohol control measures. This major reference, written by international leaders in the fields of alcoholism and alcohol policy, provides a comprehensive study of one of the foremost health problems in the world, and represents the highest standards of research within the field. It will be valuable to physicians and health professionals involved with patients with alcohol-related problems, scientists, public health specialists, health policy specialists, researchers and legislators as well as students of public health.

Days later he writes another poem with a tone similar to the first, entitles it 'Anima', then realizes he has just begun a series which must all bear the same title. Furthermore, the man decides that in the future and till the day of his death he is going to continue writing poems that, since they have this tone, will bear the title 'Anima.' At the end of a year, having written some 150 poems, he extracts from the accumulated mass 60 poems called 'Anima'"--Jose Kozer.

Subtitled 'The Belated Love Poems of Thean Morris Caelli' - a neglected 20th century poet much influenced by Celan and Vallejo - this collection represents the merging of two fine Australian poets into the consciousness of an other. Or An Other. Both authors worked on each individual text, and thus it is a true joint effort, not simply a kind of book-length renga. A remarkable departure for two of the finest poets from Australia's current middle generation.
