The first full-length study of cycling activism through the lens of
social movement theory, this book demonstrates that, despite
tremendous differences, bike activism can be understood as a
continuous and connected activity spanning a century and a half and
across continents. With examples from street protest to
institutional lobbying, it emphasises cyclingâs current central
importance to zero carbon transport futures, while showing that
cycling activism is also not always about the bike or the cyclist,
as successive generations of activists have used cycling to
articulate different visions of freedom and autonomy. Moving from a
consideration of social movement theory as a means to understand
cycling activism, the author presents a series of case studies of
collective action, organisations, networks and campaigns in order
to illustrate and elaborate a theoretical model through which
diverse campaigns and approaches to change can be understood. As
such, Cycling Activism will appeal to those with interests in
mobilisation for social change, mobility and transport studies, and
social movement theory, as well as cycling studies.

Cycling: A Sociology of Velomobility explores cycling as a
sociological phenomenon. Drawing on extensive ethnographic
fieldwork, it considers the interaction of materials, competencies
and meanings that comprise a variety of cycling practices. What
might appear at first to be self-evident actions are shown to be
constructed through the interplay of numerous social and political
forces. Using a theoretical framework from mobilities studies, its
central themes respond to the question of what it is about cycling
that provokes so much interest and passion, both positive and
negative. Individual chapters consider how cycling has appeared as
theme and illustration in social theory, as well as the legacies of
these theorizations. The book expands on the image of cycling
practices as the product of an assemblage of technology, rider and
environment. Riding spaces as material technologies are found to be
as important as the machinery of the cycle, and a distinction is
made between routes and rides to help interpret aspects of
journey-making. Ideas of both affordance and script are used to
explore how elements interact in performance to create sensory and
experiential scapes. Consideration is also given to the changing
identities of cycling practices in historical and geographical
perspective. The book adds to existing research by extending the
theorization of cycling mobilities. It engages with both current
and past debates on the place of cycling in mobility systems and
the problems of researching, analyzing and communicating ephemeral
mobile experiences.

Routledge Companion to Cycling presents a comprehensive overview of
an artefact that throughout the modern era has been a bellwether
indicator of the major social, economic and environmental trends
that have permeated society The volume synthesizes a rapidly
growing body of research on the bicycle, its past and present uses,
its technological evolution, its use in diverse geographical
settings, its aesthetics and its deployment in art and literature.
From its origins in early modern carriage technology in Germany, it
has generated what is now a vast, multi-disciplinary literature
encompassing a wide range of issues in countries throughout the
world.
Provides a critical examination of existing cycling structures
alongside current policies and practices used to promote cycling in
Europe. Considering the cultural politics of infrastructure, urban
space wars and questions of safety and risk, it provides policy
solutions for sustainable cities. Contributors show infrastructural
provision to be an intensely political act and its meaning variable
according to larger political processes and contexts.

Managing hospitality experiences is a crucial part of the
hospitality business and industry alike. While many textbooks cover
the management of hospitality services, this text focuses
specifically on experiences, while also providing a full and
detailed insight into the ways in which experiences are designed
and delivered. Using examples from the gamut of hospitality, this
book explores issues around people, services and spaces. It covers
management issues such as marketing, human resources, operations,
quality management, facilities management, project management and
strategy, while considering hospitality operations within their
wider geo-social and geo-environmental settings. This book includes
a range of important contemporary topics, such as sustainability,
resilience and ethics; supported throughout by learning objectives,
case studies, review questions, links to videos and further reading
suggestions. This book: Emphasises experiences within hospitality,
providing students with a focused and applicable text. Includes
numerous international industry case studies to illustrate how
hospitality organisations manage experiences; these real-life
scenarios provide key teaching points. Provides wider theoretical
principles to develop the field of hospitality and place it within
an industry context. An invaluable read for undergraduate students
of hospitality and event management, this textbook also provides an
overview for postgraduate students and those studying further
education courses in hospitality and related areas.
With origins as far back as the 14th Century, Westminster School is
one of the oldest in the country with a long tradition of
scholarship - and outstanding results, both in academic and public
life. Over the centuries, Westminster has stood apart from other
prominent schools. Firmly grounded between Westminster Abbey and
the Houses of Parliament, it has remained curiously unswayed by the
influence and ethos of figures such as Thomas Arnold and the
Victorian public school tradition, combining a distinctive
evolution with the retention of much of its unique character. A
great many of the school's former pupils are famous names. At one
time, some of those pupils were uncontrolled outside school hours
and notoriously unruly about town, but always encouraged to
question, challenge and debate - and above all to respect genuine
scholarship. They rank among this country's most distinguished
thinkers, writers, theologians, scientists, politicians, artists
and musicians. Ben Jonson, George Herbert, Richard Busby, John
Locke, Christopher Wren, Robert Hooke, Lord Mansfield, Charles
Wesley, Warren Hastings, Jeremy Bentham, Henry Mayhew, A. A. Milne,
John Spedan Lewis, Richard Doll and Tony Benn are the individuals
the authors recognise as 'loyal dissenters', at once respectful of
peers, staff and principles, yet unafraid to forge their own
direction.

introduction to sustainable transport development in practice via a

sustainable transport makes a practical contribution to
post-development discourses. This book offers a practical way into
the complexities of post-development theory.

profound transformation in the industrialized nations as much as in
developing economies. This is a book of interest to anyone studying
