This book examines the political economy of the states of Pacific
Asia, stretching from Japan to Burma since the end of WWII.
"Governance in Pacific Asia" offers a comprehensive account of the
diverse experiences of the states in Pacific Asia. Organized
thematically around government and business relations in the main
sectors of the economy, chapters cover the historical, social, and
cultural contexts for such policies as well as the social and
political consequences of rapid economic development. They also
discuss the increasing economic integration of the region as well
as its impact on global affairs and the reverse effect of
globalization upon particular political systems. Each chapter
contains case studies and examples from anywhere in the region,
with some countries appearing more regularly, such as China, Japan,
newly industrialized economies, Thailand, the Philippines,
Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. "Governance in Pacific Asia"
provides an in-depth comparative survey of a key region in world
politics and political economy. An essential text that includes
sources from the region in at least three languages (Chinese,
Japanese, and Indonesian/Malay), it will be of interest to students
and faculty in international relations, developmental politics,
Asian politics, and political economy.
This book identifies, analyzes and discusses the current trends of
digitalized, decentralized, and networked physical value creation
by focusing on the particular example of 3D printing. In addition
to evaluating 3D printing's disruptive potentials against a broader
economic background, it also addresses the technology's potential
impacts on sustainability and emerging modes of bottom-up and
community-based innovation. Emphasizing these topics from economic,
technical, social and environmental perspectives, the book offers a
multifaceted overview that scrutinizes the scenario of a
fundamental transition: from a centralized to a far more
decentralized system of value creation.
Drawing on empirical insights from the field of desktop 3D
printing, this book elaborates the concept of innovation
communities as a pattern of open and distributed innovation. As
these communities spur a fruitful exchange of explorative, open
source knowledge, they represent a novel mode of "doing
innovation", which considerably differs from established practices
in market and business realms. Hence, the people that participate
in these collective endeavors often develop entrepreneurial
ambitions and start to exploit community-based innovations
commercially. The book presents deep insights on the institutional
idiosyncrasies of innovation communities, the associated dilemma of
entrepreneurship and the strategies of 3D-printing startups to face
the corresponding challenges.
What makes an effective executive?
The measure of the executive, Peter F. Drucker reminds us, is
the ability to "get the right things done." This usually involves
doing what other people have overlooked as well as avoiding what is
unproductive. Intelligence, imagination, and knowledge may all be
wasted in an executive job without the acquired habits of mind that
mold them into results. Drucker identifies five practices essential
to business effectiveness that can, and must, be learned: Managing
time Choosing what to contribute to the organization Knowing where
and how to mobilize strength for best effect Setting the right
priorities Knitting all of them together with effective
decision-making
Ranging widely through the annals of business and government,
Peter F. Drucker demonstrates the distinctive skill of the
executive and offers fresh insights into old and seemingly obvious
business situations.
Hong Kong in Transition offers a perspective on the exceptional constitutional and administrative experiment that has been taking place in Hong Kong, based on a substantial period under Chinese rule. There have been both successes and failures, and a perceptible process of change which is important to document. The particular appeal of this volume lies in the fact that it combines a broad overview with detailed study of individual topics. It is multidisciplinary, and its chapters may be read as 'stand-alone' studies or taken as complementary parts of a whole snapshot of Hong Kong in this critical early period. The chapters are pitched at a level to make them accessible both to undergraduates and to the specialist. Contributors have been drawn from Hong Kong, Macau, the UK, the US, Australia and Germany, reflecting the international interest in the fate of Hong Kong. eBook available with sample pages: 0203222776
The Internet is transforming political institutions and modes of
political communication. It is also transforming relaitons between
states and between citizens. Above all it provides opportunities to
create new political communities. This book provides examples of
how it is beginning to do so at the sub-state, state and
international levels. Both established democracies, such as the US,
the UK and Germany, as well as authoritarian regimes in Asia and
Africa, are having to come to terms with it. But although it can be
a force for increased democracy and for the spread of human rights
worldwide, it may also be used by anti-democratic groups who have
previously been marginalised. Both ethnic minorities and neo-Nazi
groups are already trying to make the most of the Internet. Strong
democracy or a 1984-type state: both are possibilities, both
present enormous challenges.

Featuring a wide geographical scope, this collection of essays
surveys enterprise and welfare reforms in all the remaining four
Asian communist states: China, Vietnam, Laos and North Korea. Since
the collapse of the Soviet Union they can no longer place major
reliance upon assistance from other "fraternal" states and have to
devise their own strategies for survival. All have shown a trend
towards greater reliance on market forces, though in different ways
and to varying degrees.
Enterprise management has to adapt to this. In some of them
entrepreneurs have become politically and socially acceptable. They
may even begin to set trends for social evolution. Yet since state
entreprises used to be responsible for all welfare payments to
employees and their families, management reforms cannot be
separated from those of welfare arrangements. Reducing an
enterprise's non-commerical obligations for the sake of greater
market efficiency is bound to affect welfare provision. It also
reopens the role of official trade unions. How these regimes cope
with these conflicting pressures are vital factors in their
long-term viability.

We live in an age of unprecedented opportunity: with ambition,
drive, and talent, you can rise to the top of your chosen
profession regardless of where you started out. But with
opportunity comes responsibility. Companies today aren't managing
their knowledge workers careers. Instead, you must be your own
chief executive officer. That means it's up to you to carve out
your place in the world and know when to change course. And it's up
to you to keep yourself engaged and productive during a career that
may span some 50 years. In Managing Oneself, Peter Drucker explains
how to do it. The keys: Cultivate a deep understanding of yourself
by identifying your most valuable strengths and most dangerous
weaknesses; Articulate how you learn and work with others and what
your most deeply held values are; and Describe the type of work
environment where you can make the greatest contribution. Only when
you operate with a combination of your strengths and self-knowledge
can you achieve true and lasting excellence. Managing Oneself
identifies the probing questions you need to ask to gain the
insights essential for taking charge of your career. Peter Drucker
was a writer, teacher, and consultant. His 34 books have been
published in more than 70 languages. He founded the Peter F.
Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, and counseled 13
governments, public services institutions, and major corporations.
Peter F. Drucker discusses how the new paradigms of management have changed and will continue to change our basic assumptions about the practices and principles of management. Forward-looking and forward-thinking, Management Challenges for the 21st Century combines the broad knowledge, wide practical experience, profound insight, sharp analysis, and enlightened common sense that are the essence of Drucker's writings and "landmarks of the managerial profession." --Harvard Business Review
