"To photograph an eye is to see into another world, a deeper
emotional world. These photographs are like small windows into
houses that we pass every day but never look inside. In a time
where people are looking at screens and experiencing less eye
contact with each other, I am happy to put out this book that takes
a deeper look into the eyes of these famous faces." - Anna Gabriel.
It is said that the eyes are a window to the soul. They are what we
first look at when we meet a stranger, and one of the most
expressive parts of the human body. The eye speaks an intricate
language, one that cannot be heard, only felt. The size of the
pupil can signify focus or arousal. We meet each other's eyes to
show attentive interest, yet often feel discomfort when stared at:
an evolutionary trait designed to alert us to a predatory gaze.
This book is a testament to the power of the human eye. It gathers
together Anna Gabriel's collection of photographs, showing the
close-up eyes of numerous well-known rock and film stars, including
David Byrne, Helena Christensen, Willem Dafoe, The Edge, Noel
Gallagher, Annie Lennox, Susan Sarandon, Benjamin Zephaniah, Peter
Gabriel and many more.
Music is a universal human experience that's been with us since the
dawn of time. You've listened to music all your life . . . but have
you ever wondered why? It turns out music isn't just about
entertainment-it's a deeply embedded, subtly powerful means of
communication. Songs resonate with your brain wave patterns and
drive changes in your brain: creating your moods, consolidating
your memories, strengthening your habits (the good ones and the bad
ones alike) . . . even making you fall in or out of love. Your
music is molding you, at a subconscious level, all day long. And
now, for the first time ever, you can take charge. From executive
editor Peter Gabriel and the minds behind It's All in Your Head
(the ultimate user's guide for your brain), Reverberation unlocks a
world where you can actively leverage the power of music to improve
and enhance every aspect of your life. You'll learn specific songs
and techniques to help you sleep better, induce creative
breakthroughs, be more productive, have better sex, and a whole lot
more. You'll discover the amazing work happening at the
intersection of music, science, technology, and medicine. The
authors spoke to dozens of neuroscientists making exciting
breakthroughs, as well as top recording artists like David Byrne,
Branford Marsalis, Hans Zimmer, Mick Fleetwood, and Sheila E. to
gain the music maker's perspective. And you'll learn how music is
already being strategically applied to break addiction and reverse
the effects of Alzheimer's, build more productive and creative
teams, develop intuitive personalized technology, and is otherwise
changing . . . well, everything.
RFID is a key technology for Europe. Today there is a noticeable
shift away from the days of RFID pilot projects, and towards a time
where organisations are looking to RFID to drive efficiency and
innovation. Although Europe is a leading player in the world of
RFID technology, several challenges which are preventing RFID from
reaching its full potential need to be addressed. To further the
advancement of this technology, coordinated European efforts need
to be promoted, specifically in the areas of standardisation, user
guidelines, legislation, technology development, and research and
development. These themes have been analysed, and clear
recommendations have been derived, stating what the different RFID
stakeholders can do to support the technology. This book is aimed
at decision makers in all fields of society, e.g. in companies,
politics, business associations, etc. The publication is a summary
of the results of the coordination action CE RFID - "Coordinating
European Efforts in the RFID Value Chain" - and is a network of
European RFID technology providers, vendors and end users. It aims
at promoting the use of RFID technology and supporting further
development. The project was funded by the European Commission
under the 6th Framework Programme.
Social innovation and social entrepreneurship look for creative and
affordable solutions to specific societal problems. Fuelled by the
spread of the internet and the ubiquity of mobile phones, there are
more people working to solve pressing social and environmental
problems in the world today than ever before. Social
Entrepreneurship and Innovation presents the journeys of pioneering
- and often accidental - social innovators who, faced with a
problem, used their courage, tenacity and creative thinking to find
a solution. Using their own words to reflect upon their
experiences, these cases do not gloss over the setbacks and the
dead-ends social entrepreneurs can face. Instead, readers will gain
a realistic insight into the challenges and an engaging look at the
problem-solving mindset needed to overcome them. From a life-saving
project to bring solar-powered lighting to midwives in Nigeria, to
a news dissemination service that's grown from small beginnings to
have a global impact, each case study draws out the lessons learnt
by the innovators, providing guidance and advice for those looking
to follow in their footsteps. Social Entrepreneurship and
Innovation is an invaluable resource for social entrepreneurs and
innovators looking for new ideas and insight into what really works
- and what doesn't.
A quietly spoken, true English eccentric with something of a
rebellious streak, Tony Stratton Smith initially charmed and
blustered his way into the music business as a manager during the
early 1960s and a few years later, when the record labels stopped
playing by what he believed to be the rules, he simply went and
formed his own -The Famous Charisma Label - and set about spinning
the record business on its head. An independent label like no
other, it is fair to say that without Strat's total belief and
unwavering long-term support there would be no Genesis - Phil
Collins has said as much - and a long line of artists owe Tony a
similar debt of gratitude, from Monty Python to Malcolm McLaren,
Lindisfarne to Sir John Betjeman, Vivian Stanshall to Julian
Lennon. A former sports journalist and close friend to Jimmy
Greaves and Sir Matt Busby (Strat narrowly missed a seat in the
Munich Air crash) he later became a popular figure in the horse
racing world. But making money was never very high on Tony's
agenda, simply a means to an end that enabled him to fund the music
and mayhem that brought him so much enjoyment. Strat was never
happier than when the artists that he had so carefully nurtured
were fulfilling their creative potential, delighting in working
with the talents of Peter Gabriel, Alan Hull, Clifford T. Ward,
Howard Werth and Peter Hammill. Ultimately, what he really cared
about were the people, the creativity, about imagination,
inspiration and risk, and the sheer joy to be had in bringing all
those elements together, lighting the Charisma-pink touch paper and
standing back, glass in hand, to watch what might happen when the
sparks began to fly.
An illustrated reference hand-book where the complete list of
world-wide Prog artists of the musical genre are finally given
their rightful place in History. A first true encyclopedia
collecting over a thousand musicians, most of which forgotten, and
more than two thousand images of sometimes very hard to find
records, for the first time ever presented all together in the same
book. The tangible proof that Progressive Rock is still alive and
kicking even after fifty years.

The main purpose of the present work is to present to the reader a
particularly nice category for the study of homotopy, namely the
homo topic category (IV). This category is, in fact, - according to
Chapter VII and a well-known theorem of J. H. C. WHITEHEAD -
equivalent to the category of CW-complexes modulo homotopy, i.e.
the category whose objects are spaces of the homotopy type of a
CW-complex and whose morphisms are homotopy classes of continuous
mappings between such spaces. It is also equivalent (I, 1.3) to a
category of fractions of the category of topological spaces modulo
homotopy, and to the category of Kan complexes modulo homotopy
(IV). In order to define our homotopic category, it appears useful
to follow as closely as possible methods which have proved
efficacious in homo logical algebra. Our category is thus the"
topological" analogue of the derived category of an abelian
category (VERDIER). The algebraic machinery upon which this work is
essentially based includes the usual grounding in category theory -
summarized in the Dictionary - and the theory of categories of
fractions which forms the subject of the first chapter of the book.
The merely topological machinery reduces to a few properties of
Kelley spaces (Chapters I and III). The starting point of our study
is the category,10 Iff of simplicial sets (C.S.S. complexes or
semi-simplicial sets in a former terminology)."
politisch-administrati- ven Konfliktebene in detaillierter Weise
vorzustellen und Grundstrukturen der Willensbildung an einigen
zentralen Konfliktregelungsprozessen zu charakte- risieren. Die
