Practical Stone Masonry is the first major book in nearly seventy
years on the craft of the stonemason. Today the work of the
stonemason is almost exclusively confined to the repair of historic
buildings, requiring a full working knowledge of the detailed
traditional craft practices relating to repairs. This book
addresses that need. It covers the basic methods of working stone,
the making of specialized tools, and, for the first time, a full
analysis of the procedures for setting-out for repairs. A broad
description of the nature and problems of stone also includes
guidance on selection. In addition, the authors look at the causes
of decay in stone and outline methods for repair of both stone and
mortar. "Practical Stone Masonry" contains essential advice for
working masons and apprentices, and all those engaged in planning
and supervising such works. It includes: the basic methods of
working stone; how to make specialized tools; the procedures for
setting-out for repairs explained; and, the nature and problems of
stone plus a guide to selection.

Re-issued to coincide with the centenary of Messiaen's birth, The
Messiaen Companion was the first major study to appear after the
composer's death in April 1992. It was the first book to offer both
a complete survey of Messiaen's extraordinary achievements and a
comprehensive guide to his music, also examining in detail the
enduring inspiration which Messiaen derived from his religious
faith and from his lifelong passion for ornithology and the natural
world. The contributors, all of whom have made a special study of
the composer, include two biographers of Messiaen and a number of
the foremost interpreters of his music. Messiaen's influential
teaching is recalled in essays by three of his pupils (Pierre
Boulez, George Benjamin, and Peter Hill), and the composer is also
remembered in a remarkable and moving contribution from his widow
and devoted musical companion, the pianist Yvonne Loriod.
The Rite of Spring is Stravinsky's most revolutionary work. This comprehensive guide tells in vivid detail the story of its inception and composition, of the stormy rehearsals that led to the scandalous premiere in 1913, and of Stravinsky's later betrayal of the ballet's first choreographer, Nijinsky. Peter Hill probes beneath the surface of the music to reveal an architectural conception of unsuspected guile and subtlety. He provides a detailed discussion of the work in performance and a hard-hitting conclusion, which poses a radical challenge to the orthodox view of the work.
Roderick Chadwick and Peter Hill give a detailed account of the
evolution of Olivier Messiaen's Catalogue d'oiseaux for piano solo,
from its initial conception in the Black Forest in 1953 to its
completion and premiere in the Parisian 'Concerts du Domaine
Musical' at the end of the decade. Through close examination of the
composer's birdsong cahiers they demonstrate how Messiaen
translated nature into music in a way that had a major impact on
his later work. They also consider issues of performance, and
Messiaen's artistic relationship with his dedicatee and wife-to-be,
Yvonne Loriod, including the significance of her two recordings of
the cycle. This book illuminates the Catalogue from a variety of
angles: its historical significance, as a study of how mimicry of
nature can be transformed into music of mesmeric originality, and
as a guide that offers a wealth of fresh insights to listeners and
performers.

When Peter Hill, a student at Dundee College of Art, answered an
advert in The Scotsman seeking lighthouse keepers, little did he
imagine that within a month he would be living with three men he
didn't know in a lighthouse on Pladda, a small remote island off
the west coast of Scotland. Hill was nineteen, it was 1973 and,
with his head fed by Vietnam, Zappa, Kerouac, Vonnegut, Watergate
and Coronation Street, he spent six months on various lighthouses,
"keeping" with all manner of unusual and fascinating people. Within
thirty years this way of life was to have disappeared entirely. The
resulting book is a charming and beautifully written memoir that is
not only a heartfelt lament for Hill's own youth and innocence but
also for a simpler and more honest age.
This reassuring guide explains prescribed ADHD medicines for
children in clear, everyday language. Based on questions the author
has received from countless families in his work as a Consultant
Psychiatrist, the expert information in this book answers the most
pressing questions a parent will have about ADHD medicines: how
they work, what they do, what is available and how to talk about
them to your children. This book sheds light on why not all
medicines are easily available, the differences between certain
medications and their level of effectiveness, all based on
scientific evidence. This information will support parents in
discussions with medical professionals, explaining the
practicalities and demystifying the terminology around medication
and treatments. The book also provides insights into the decisions
behind prescribing certain medicines and how they should be taken.
Armed with this guide, parents - as well as teachers and others
working with kids with ADHD - can feel confident and assured when
their child is prescribed treatments for ADHD.
