Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy - Principles and Spectral Interpretation (Paperback, 2nd edition): Peter Larkin Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy - Principles and Spectral Interpretation (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Peter Larkin
R2,459 Discovery Miles 24 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy, Principles and Spectral Interpretation, Second Edition provides a solid introduction to vibrational spectroscopy with an emphasis on developing critical interpretation skills. This book fully integrates the use of both IR and Raman spectroscopy as spectral interpretation tools, enabling the user to utilize the strength of both techniques while also recognizing their weaknesses. This second edition more than doubles the amount of interpreted IR and Raman spectra standards and spectral unknowns. The chapter on characteristic group frequencies is expanded to include increased discussions of sulphur and phosphorus organics, aromatic and heteroaromatics as well as inorganic compounds. New topics include a discussion of crystal lattice vibrations (low frequency/THz), confocal Raman microscopy, spatial resolution in IR and Raman microscopy, as well as criteria for selecting Raman excitation wavelengths. These additions accommodate the growing use of vibrational spectroscopy for process analytical monitoring, nanomaterial investigations, and structural and identity determinations to an increasing user base in both industry and academia.

Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy - Principles and Spectral Interpretation (Hardcover, New): Peter Larkin Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy - Principles and Spectral Interpretation (Hardcover, New)
Peter Larkin
R2,227 Discovery Miles 22 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy: Principles and Spectral Interpretation explains the background, core principles and tests the readers understanding of the important techniques of Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy. These techniques are used by chemists, environmental scientists, forensic scientists etc to identify unknown chemicals. In the case of an organic chemist these tools are part of an armory of techniques that enable them to conclusively prove what compound they have made, which is essential for those being used in medical applications.

The book reviews basic principles, instrumentation, sampling methods, quantitative analysis, origin of group frequencies and qualitative interpretation using generalized Infrared (IR) and Raman spectra. An extensive use of graphics is used to describe the basic principles of vibrational spectroscopy and the origins of group frequencies, with over 100 fully interpreted FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra included and indexed to the relevant qualitative interpretation chapter. A final chapter with forty four unknown spectra and with a corresponding answer key is included to test the readers understanding. Tables of frequencies (peaks) for both infrared and Raman spectra are provided at key points in the book and will act as a useful reference resource for those involve interpreting spectra.

This book provides a solid introduction to vibrational spectroscopy with an emphasis placed upon developing critical interpretation skills. Ideal for those using and analyzing IR and Raman spectra in their laboratories as well as those using the techniques in the field.

Uniquely integrates discussion of IR and Raman spectra

Theory illustrated and explained with over 100 fully interpreted high quality FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra (4 cm-1 resolution)

Selected problems at the end of chapters and 44 unknown IR and Raman spectra to test readers understanding (with a corresponding answer key)

If Trees Allay an Earth Retrialling: Peter Larkin If Trees Allay an Earth Retrialling
Peter Larkin
R427 Discovery Miles 4 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

“Larkin’s way of pulling language up by the roots – literally, as we have frequently to go back to the root meanings of words to understand his unorthodox grammar – does not make it easy for the reader, but he is a rewarding and deeply original poet.” —Isobel Armstrong “No poet has ever given so much to trees – his thought, his attention, his invention – which lets him then, in turn, give these trees to us, and in ways that highlight the complexities of their architectures and their contexts, their interactions with the myriad communities in which they participate. This new collection branches out toward grasses, seeds, electricity … all propelled by a wonderful tanglework of sound that reflects the environmental networks in which trees play such a crucial role. This book is a sheer gift – of trees and to trees, and above all, to readers who love them.” —Cole Swensen

Encroach to Resume (Paperback): Peter Larkin Encroach to Resume (Paperback)
Peter Larkin
R423 Discovery Miles 4 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

These poems entwine round such matters as how roots move as they grow or how feet plant themselves, why a forest admits lanes and lines but obstructs them into shelter, how a tree might relate to all it isn't, what the hidden domains of nature can mean in and for trees, or the way in which trees cast the skies themselves into flight. The two last poems envisage a body language for trees, or how a dead upright tree remains a living nub of forest. "Setting up an ecological orientation against habitual ways of reading and perceiving language, Larkin's poems offer scientifically descriptive close investi-gations of trees whilst implying an allegorical dimension. They do so by means of a range of registers that only gain their scarce value in relation to one another." —Katharina Maria Kalinowski "Peter Larkin's radically de-anthropocentrized poetry offers restorative glimpses of a possible 'dimensional commons'. Encroach to Resume continues that dedicated project, now branching beyond our Anthroposcenic 'gap in the planet baled out by tree-pumps' towards a hyper-extensive terrain of organic and poetic interrelation. Through metamorphic expressions of encroachment and resumption, congealment and bifurcation, collapse and recovery, these poems are saturated by thresholds of contact between things 'differently given, not / riven in difference'. The collection represents another landmark in Larkin's own conceptual forest, furthering the unique somatic-semantic plexus of his bewildering and vital body of poetry." —Dominic Hand

“Larkin’s writing maps out and conceptually creates a scarce, minimally legible layer, and does so as a form of adoration or communion – the presence of scarcity makes its opposite, creative plenitude, come as close as possible.” —Edmund Hardy “Larkin indicates how one can only pay tribute to the rarity and uniqueness of the scarce by not appropriating it in a fraudulent poetic equivalence of pseudo-poverty, but rather by asymptotically approaching it, with genuine humility, from ever new angles.” —John Milbank

Give Forest its Next Portent (Paperback): Peter Larkin Give Forest its Next Portent (Paperback)
Peter Larkin
R504 Discovery Miles 5 040 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Peter Larkin's sustained engagement with the poetics of scarcity registers the eco-philosophical ramifications of a resource economics now generating scenarios of absolute scarcity in the face of unlimited growth. Simultaneously, he explores something like a theological ontology of dedication, what it means to accept a mode of finite being with roots in the radicalism of Romantic ecologies, by which scarcity can be understood as prophetic." - Carol Watts "Larkin's is the most radically decentered poetry of ecological apprehension and conscience that we have in English, and if it is also among the most estrangingly beautiful, that is no accident. Larkin's verse rides its Modernist inheritances through and past what we now think of as postmodernism, fetching up on some farther, stranger shore." - G. C. Waldrep

"For Larkin, landscape is not so much a thing as a process, a kind of prosody marked by opening (which the prose poem enacts through clearings of verse) and by colonizing, to a rhythm not necessarily human. It is a process whose articulations colonize the poet-forester's abandoned grammars." - Jonathan Skinner

Leaves of Field (Paperback, New): Peter Larkin Leaves of Field (Paperback, New)
Peter Larkin
R416 Discovery Miles 4 160 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Peter Larkin might best be described as an eco-poet. His work stretches the fabric of form and language in an attempt to come to grips with the despoliation of our forests, woods and countryside. The language of forestry and of agriculture, of botany and arboriculture is plundered in order to give the poems the tools they need to express their defiance. This collection consists of three long sequences that mix prose with poetry: Leaves of Field, Open Woods and Moving Woods.

Terrain Seed Scarcity - Poems from a Decade (Paperback): Peter Larkin Terrain Seed Scarcity - Poems from a Decade (Paperback)
Peter Larkin
R371 Discovery Miles 3 710 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Terrain Seed Scarcity opens with a selection of poems in which the concern for scarcity as a speculative edge first surfaced, and is followed by six sequences arranged in short prose clusters or stanzas, sometimes with verse tail-pieces. Four of these focus directly on trees: under the aspect of addition as a branching diversion rather than a dispersal; the co-forms of forest evoked as edge, line and verticality; plantations as parallels to a re-covered, stretched centre; a lean, denuded outcrop of trees better served by what wheels around it than by what it fails to contain. Some of these sequences are accompanied by brief essays as sideshoots or offshoots. Other poems work through the sourcefulness of an environmental sink figured also as recess or protection, and there is a set of minimalist sententiae which rework 18th century landscape aesthetics. The collection ends with a cycle of syllabic poems, `Spirit of the Trees' derived from a once popular anthology. Some of the more recent material is published here for the first time.
