This edited volume maps dialogues between science and technology
studies research on the arts and the emerging field of artistic
research. The main themes in the book are an advanced understanding
of discursivity and reasoning in arts-based research, the
methodological relevance of material practices and things, and
innovative ways of connecting, staging, and publishing research in
art and academia. This book touches on topics including studies of
artistic practices; reflexive practitioners at the boundaries
between the arts, science, and technology; non-propositional forms
of reasoning; unconventional (arts-based) research methods and
enhanced modes of presentation and publication.

Sequel to Tim Burton's hugely successful 'Batman' (1989). Oswald
Cobblepot was abandoned by his parents as a baby. Thirty three
years later, bent on revenge, he returns to Gotham City as the
Penguin (Danny DeVito). First he begins a warped campaign to become
Mayor, helped by millionaire businessman Max Shreck (Christopher
Walken); next, he undertakes a mission to murder every first born
son in Gotham - a plan which will avenge his own beginnings.
Meanwhile, he has two adversaries to contend with: Catwoman
(Michelle Pfeiffer), the embittered ex-secretary of Max Shreck,
and, of course, the old caped crusader himself - Batman (Michael
Keaton).
Envisioning Networked Urban Mobilities brings together scientific
reflections on the relations of art and urban mobilities and
artistic research on the topic. The editors open the book by
setting out the concept grounded in the exhibition curated by Aslak
Aamot Kjaerulff and refers to earlier work on mobilities and art
generated by the Cosmobilities Network. This third volume has two
sections, both consisting of short papers and illustrations. The
first section is based on artists who were part of the conferences'
art exhibition, and the second part is based on theoretical
reflections on art and artists.

This monograph presents the first comprehensive diachronic account
of copular and passive verb constructions in Old and Middle
English. The mysterious loss of the high-frequency verb weorthan
'become' is explained as a casualty of changing word order in
narrative during Middle English. The merger of is 'is' and bith
'shall be, is generally' into a single suppletive verb is related
to the development of a general analytic future shall be. The
co-occurrence of multiple changes led to become and wax crossing a
threshold of similarity with existing copulas, from which they
analogically adopted full productivity in one fell swoop. In
explaining each of these changes, the book goes beyond the level of
the verb and its complements, drawing attention to analogical
networks and the importance of a verb's embeddedness in clausal and
textual environments. Using a radically usage-based approach,
treating syntax as emerging from (changing) frequencies, Peter
Petre draws attention to general principles of constructional
change, including but not limited to grammaticalization and
lexicalization. He proposes novel parallelisms between linguistic
and ecological evolution. Going beyond the view of language change
as propagating only in social interaction, Petre explains how each
individual's mental grammar can be seen as a dynamic ecosystem with
hierarchical environments (clausal niches, textual habitats). In
this view, the interconnectedness of seemingly unrelated changes,
itself resulting from cognitive economy principles, is arguably
more decisive in lexical change than is functional competition.

The movement toward greater openness represents a change of
philosophy, ethos, and government and a set of interrelated and
complex changes that transform markets altering the modes of
production and consumption, ushering in a new era based on the
values of openness: an ethic of sharing and peer-to-peer
collaboration enabled through new architectures of participation.
These changes indicate a broader shift from the underlying
industrial mode of production-a "productionist" metaphysics-to a
postindustrial mode of consumption as use, reuse, and modification
where new logics of social media structure different patterns of
cultural consumption and symbolic analysis becomes a habitual and
daily creative activity. The economics of openness constructs a new
language of "presuming" and "produsage" in order to capture the
open participation, collective co-creativity, communal evaluation,
and commons-based production of social and public goods.
Information is the vital element in the "new" politics and economy
that links space, knowledge, and capital in networked practices and
freedom is the essential ingredient in this equation if these
network practices are to develop or transform themselves into
'knowledge cultures'. The Virtues of Openness investigates the
social processes and policies that foster openness as an overriding
educational value evidenced in the growth of open source, open
access, and open education and their convergences that characterize
global knowledge communities. The book argues that openness seems
also to suggest political transparency and the norms of open
inquiry, indeed, even democracy itself as both the basis of the
logic of inquiry and the dissemination of its results. The Virtues
of Openness examines the complex history of the concept of the open
society before beginning a systematic investigation of openness in
relation to the book, the "open text" and the written word. These
changes are discussed in relation to the development of new open
spaces of scholarship with their impact upon open journal systems,
open peer review, open science, and the open global digital
economy.

French-born Jean Prouve (1901-1984) was the 20th century's leading
construction designer, a self-declared constructeur and member of
the jury who oversaw the design of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. As
a designer, he captured the midcentury spirit of innovation,
expansion, and growth, developing techniques that united simple,
striking aesthetics with practical, cost-effective materials and
assembly. From vast, temporary exhibition marquees to handheld
letter openers, modular building systems to interior lighting,
Prouve's designs efficiently fitted their function with minimal
fuss and understated elegance. Feted by designers, architects, and
engineers the world over, Prouve has left a rich and inspirational
legacy, which resonates perfectly with the approach of this compact
volume, neatly summarizing his life and works. About the series
Born back in 1985, the Basic Art Series has evolved into the
best-selling art book collection ever published. Each book in
TASCHEN's Basic Architecture series features: an introduction to
the life and work of the architect the major works in chronological
order information about the clients, architectural preconditions as
well as construction problems and resolutions a list of all the
selected works and a map indicating the locations of the best and
most famous buildings approximately 120 illustrations (photographs,
sketches, drafts, and plans)
Agroforestry is a land use system that allows for the concurrent
production of trees and agricultural crops and/or animals from the
same piece of land. It has a rich history of development and has
been practised in some parts of the world for more than 6,000
years. In 1997, CABI published the seminal book on this subject,
Temperate Agroforestry Systems, which was a break from the norm as
almost all agroforestry texts up to that date were only relevant to
tropical areas. The book explored the development of temperate
agroforestry and agroforestry systems, concentrating on those areas
within temperate zones where the greatest advances, adoptions and
modifications had taken place up to that time: North and South
America, China, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. This second
fully-updated and expanded edition includes additional chapters on
India and Chile and, as a result of ongoing advances in the field,
separate chapters on the US, Canada, the UK and continental Europe.
Today's challenges of climate change, population growth and food
security, in concert with the ongoing global requirement for the
energy and water needed for a resilient agricultural paradigm, can
be met through the wide-scale adoption of agroforestry practices,
in both tropical regions and temperate zones. The 2nd edition
ofTemperate Agroforestry Systems brings together many examples of
temperate agroforestry and will make valuable reading for all those
working in this area as researchers, practitioners and policy
makers. The book is also of importance to students and teachers of
agriculture, ecology, environmental studies and forestry in
temperate regions.
detaillierte Ausarbeitung charakterisiert.
Intensely practical and down to earth, this text covers the breadth
of health emergency preparedness, resilience and response topics in
the context of inter-disciplinary and whole society responses to a
range of threats. It includes public, private and third sector
roles in preparation for and in response to natural and man-made
events, such as: major incident planning; infectious disease
epidemics and pandemics; natural disasters; terrorist threats; and
business and service continuity management. The book builds upon
the basics of risk assessment and writing an emergency plan, and
then covers inter-agency working, command and control,
communication, personal impact and business continuity as well as
training, exercises and post-incident follow up. Detailing the full
emergency preparedness and civil protection planning cycle, the
book is illustrated throughout with real-life examples and case
studies from global experts in the field for countries with both
advanced and developing healthcare systems. This practical handbook
covering the essential aspects of major incident and disaster
management is ideal for undergraduate and master's students in
emergency management and public health, as well as for
practitioners in emergency preparedness and civil protection. It
will be valuable to all health practitioners from ambulance,
hospital, primary and community care, mental health and public
health backgrounds.

Geltung.
