Words, Objects and Events in Economics - The Making of Economic Theory (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Peter Rona, Laszlo Zsolnai,... Words, Objects and Events in Economics - The Making of Economic Theory (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Peter Rona, Laszlo Zsolnai, Agnieszka Wincewicz-Price
R1,541 Discovery Miles 15 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This open access book examines from a variety of perspectives the disappearance of moral content and ethical judgment from the models employed in the formulation of modern economic theory, and some of the papers contain important proposals about how moral judgment could be reintroduced in economic theory. The chapters collected in this volume result from the favorable reception of the first volume of the Virtues in Economics series and represent further contributions to the themes set out in that volume: (i) examining the philosophical and methodological fallacies of this turn in modern economic theory that the removal of the moral motivation of economic agents from modern economic theory has entailed; and (ii) proposing a return descriptive economics as the means with which the moral content of economic life could be restored in economic theory. This book is of interest to researchers and students of the methodology of economics, ethics, philosophers concerned with agency and economists who build economic models that rest in the intention of the agent.

Agency and Causal Explanation in Economics (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Peter Rona, Laszlo Zsolnai Agency and Causal Explanation in Economics (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Peter Rona, Laszlo Zsolnai
R1,523 Discovery Miles 15 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This open access book provides an exploration of the consequences of the ontological differences between natural and social objects (sometimes described as objects of nature and objects of thought) in the workings of causal and agency relationships. One of its important and possibly original conclusions is that causal and agency relationships do not encompass all of the dependent relationships encountered in social life. The idea that social reality is contingent has been known (and largely undisputed) at least since Wittgenstein's "On Certainty", but social science, and most notably economics has continued to operate on the basis of causal and agency theories borrowed or adapted from the natural sciences. This volume contains essays that retain and justify the partial or qualified use of this approach and essays that totally reject any use of causal and agency theory built on determined facts (closed systems). The rejection is based on the possibly original claim that, whereas causation in the objects of the natural sciences reside in their properties, human action is a matter of intentionality. It engages with critical realist theory and re-examines the role of free will in theories of human action in general and economic theory in particular.

Economics as a Moral Science (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017): Peter Rona, Laszlo Zsolnai Economics as a Moral Science (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Peter Rona, Laszlo Zsolnai
R4,073 Discovery Miles 40 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book is reclaiming economics as a moral science. It argues that ethics is a relevant and inseparable aspect of all levels of economic activity, from individual and organizational to societal and global. Taking ethical considerations into account is needed in explaining and predicting the behavior of economic agents as well as in evaluating and designing economic policies and mechanisms. The unique feature of the book is that it not only analyzes ethics and economics on an abstract level, but puts behavioral, institutional and systemic issues together for a robust and human view of economic functioning. It sees economic "facts" as interwoven with human intentionality and ethical content, a domain where utility calculations and moral considerations co-determine the behavior of economic agents and the outcomes of their activities. The book employs the personalist approach that sees human persons - endowed with free will and conscience - as the basic agents of economic life and defines human flourishing as the final end of economic activities. The book demonstrates that economics can gain a lot in meaning and also in analytical power by reuniting itself with ethics.

Luk Bouckaert, Knut J. Ims, Peter Rona
R2,610 Discovery Miles 26 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume celebrates the work of Laszlo Zsolnai, a leading researcher and scholar in the field of the ethical and spiritual aspects of economic life, who has made significant contributions to the connection between ethics, spirituality, aesthetics and economic theory. The book offers a selection of essays concerned with the ethical, spiritual and aesthetic context within which economics as a social studies discipline should be situated in order to avoid the sort of dehumanising consequences that theories based on utility maximisation and rational choice necessarily entail. It presents the economic activities of human beings not as some sort of preordained obedience to universal laws that operate independently of other human concerns, but, rather, as a part of the human desire for the Aristotelian good life. It looks at the various considerations -moral, spiritual and aesthetic - that take part in the formation of economic decisions in sharp contrast with theories that purport to explain economic phenomena solely on the basis of utility maximisation.

H. Niclassen be hilflich. R. Ammon. Allen diesen Herren sage ich meinen aufrichtigsten Dank. Berlin, April 1926. P. Rona. Inhaltsverzeichnis. Allgemeiner Teil."
