The authors examine how the USA, Great Britain, France, Sweden and Germany have responded to the increasing challenge of international competition since the mid-1970s. Apart from in Sweden, the pursuit of competitiveness has undermined economic and social citizenship rights, and this has, in Britain and the USA, engendered an assault upon the idea of the welfare state. Solidarity and social discipline will be severely tested if the welfare state is to remain economically and politically viable in a highly competitive modern world.
This book examines the relevance of modern medicine and healthcare in shaping the lives of elderly persons and the practices and institutions of ageing societies. Combining individual and social dimensions, Planning Later Life discusses the ethical, social, and political consequences of increasing life expectancies and demographic change in the context of biomedicine and public health. By focusing on the field of biomedicine and healthcare, the authors engage readers in a dialogue on the ethical and social implications of recent trends in dementia research and care, advance healthcare planning, or the rise of anti-ageing medicine and prevention. Bringing together the largely separated debates of individualist bioethics on the one hand, and public health ethics on the other, the volume deliberately considers the entanglements of envisioning, evaluating, and controlling individual and societal futures. So far, the process of devising and exploring the various positive and negative visions and strategies related to later life has rarely been reflected systematically from a philosophical, sociological, and ethical point of view. As such, this book will be crucial to those working and studying in the life sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences, particularly in the areas of bioethics, social work, gerontology and aging studies, healthcare and social service, sociology, social policy, and geography and population studies.

Over the past few decades an exceedingly large number of experimental and clinical investigations have been performed in an attempt to analyze the way in which the kidney functions. The basis for all this work was established during the nineteenth and the early twentieth century by morphologists (Bowman 1842; Hyrtl1863, 1872; Heidenhain 1874; Peter 1909; von Mollendorf 1930). All these investigators clearly outlined the extremely heterogeneous assembly of renal tissue and also defined the nephron as the smallest morphological unit. It was further the merit of these anato- mists and histologists to preclude quite a number of nephron functions based merely on their careful observations. Contemporary histologists have been able to add little to these observations. Unfortunately with the introduction of physiologic in vivo et situ studies on kidneys the interest in heterogeneity waned. This lack of attention was aggravated by the introduction of the clearance techniques which cannot account for regional differences in the function of the smallest unit, the nephron. That ana- tomic heterogeneity has a functional correlate was strongly suggested by Trueta et al. (1947) and vigorously stimulated a number of studies. The development of physiologic microtechniques, like micropuncture and microperfusion of single nephrons, or the perfusion of isolated nephron portions and electrophysiologic studies, enormously expanded our knowledge concerning details regarding nephron and total renal func- tion.
From Hampton Court to the Thames Barrier, the landscape of London unfolds along the River Thames, from leafy towpaths to bustling thoroughfares, palaces to humble dwellings, industrial buildings, warehouses and power houses to pubs, theatres and churches. In London’s Riverside in Photographs: The Thames From Hampton Court to the Thames Barrier, photographer Franco Pfaller has recorded the huge variety of landscapes, buildings, and other structures along the banks of the River Thames in London, including every bridge. Look through these photographs and you will quickly see the unique appeal of this great river artery running through the metropolis.
Why do people record TV programmes instead of watching them? Why are some recovering alcoholics pleased to let other people drink in their place? Why can ritual machines pray in place of believers? Robert Pfaller advances a general theory of interpassivity as the wish for delegated consumption and enjoyment in both art and in everyday life, tackling a vast range of phenomena: culture, art, sports and religion.

CUA Press is proud to announce the CUA Studies in Canon Law. In conjunction with the School of Canon Law of the Catholic University of America, we are making available, both digitally and in print, more than 400 canon law dissertations from the 1920s to 1960s, many of which have long been unavailable. These volumes are rich in historical content, yet remain relevant to canon lawyers today. Topics covered include such issues as abortion, excommunication, and infertility. Several studies are devoted to marriage and the annulment process; the acquiring and disposal of church property, including the union of parishes; the role and function of priests, vicars general, bishops, and cardinals; and juridical procedures within the church. For those who seek to understand current ecclesial practices in light of established canon law, these books will be an invaluable resource. |
