The need to understand the migration between the United States and
Mexico is greater today than at any time in its century long
history. Its volume and complexity are greater than most observers
might have imagined even a decade ago; and it operates in a context
charged with serious human, political, and security challenges.
Yet, there is often confusion over the most fundamental questions
about the demography, economics, and political nature of the
movement and its policy responses. The editors of this book bring
together a team of top policy-oriented migration experts from
Mexico and the United States to provide an up-to-date analysis
leading to grounded policy recommendations for both governments.
Their conclusions derive from new analyses as well as from detailed
discussions with policy-makers. Contributors assess the main
characteristics, trends, and factors influencing Mexico-U.S.
migration and recommend actions that should improve migration
management, substantially reduce undocumented flows, and refocus
Mexican migration into legal channels. Also contained within this
book are recommendations of development strategies in Mexico that
should reduce mid- to long-term emigration pressures. The book
shows that collaboration between the U.S. and Mexico is not only
possible, but necessary, as unilateral reforms will continue to
fail until both governments act together to regulate the flow,
improve conditions for the migrants, and make sure that migration
has positive social and economic impacts on both countries.
This edition presents an up-to-date and diverse review of the best
in social policy scholarship over the past 12 months, from a group
of internationally renowned authors. This collection offers a
comprehensive discussion of some of the most challenging issues
facing social policy today, including an examination of Brexit, the
Trump presidency, 'post-truth', migration, the lived experiences of
food bank users, and the future of welfare benefits. Published in
association with the SPA, the volume will be valuable to academics
and students within social policy, social welfare and related
disciplines.

Anyone reading Shakespeare's sonnets will notice how often they
speak of self-love. This is the central theme of Philip Martin's
study, which uses detailed analysis of selected sonnets and groups
of sonnets to bring out what they can tell us of 'Shakespeare's
feeling for selfhood', good and bad kinds of self-love, different
kinds of love for another, the relation of these different kinds of
love to the world of natural growth and temporal succession, and
finally the ways in which art can properly be defined as a form of
love. The study begins by considering self-love in relation to the
youth and the poet, and goes on to consider the sonnet as a form
through a comparison of Shakespeare and Donne. He concludes that
the poems enforce recognition of the fact that art, though of
far-reaching importance, is not as important as the life that it
serves and fosters.
In need of Zeiton-7 to repair the TARDIS, the Doctor and Peri
travel to the planet Varos. A former prison for the criminally
insane, Varos is now ruled by the descendents of the guards. The
population is kept in check and entertained by broadcasts of
torture and execution from the Punishment Dome - where the TARDIS
lands. Soon the Doctor and Peri, together with rebel fugitives
Jondar and Areta, find themselves trying to escape the Dome's traps
and challenges - all on live television. Can the Doctor and Peri
escape the Punishment Dome, and help the Governor ensure the people
of Varos get a fair deal for their Zeiton-7? This novel is based on
a Doctor Who story which was originally broadcast from 19-26
January 1975. Featuring the Sixth Doctor as played by Colin Baker
with his companion Peri
This publication is an easy-to-read summary of Sun Tzu's The Art of
War, a masterpiece on strategy and often referenced by generals and
theorists throughout history. The book is not only popular among
military theorists, but it has also become increasingly popular
among political leaders and those in business management. Despite
its title, The Art of War addresses strategy in a broad fashion,
touching upon public administration and planning. The text outlines
theories of battle but also advocates diplomacy and cultivating
relationships with other nations as essential to the health of a
state. "In peace prepare for war, in war prepare for peace." This
publication includes a summary of Sun Tzu's life; chapter summaries
of The Art of War; quotations; military applications; applications
outside the military; and Sun Tzu's legacy.
Why do farm workers become more vulnerable as countries get richer?
As countries get richer, the share of workers employed in
agriculture falls. In richer countries, hired farm workers do ever
more of the work on the fewer and larger farms that produce most
farm commodities. These hired workers are among the most
vulnerable. They include local workers who lack the skills and
contacts needed to get nonfarm jobs that usually offer higher wages
and more opportunities as well as legal and unauthorized migrants
from poorer countries who may not know or exercise their
labor-related rights. Government enforcement of labor laws depends
on complaints, and vulnerable workers rarely complain. The
Prosperity Paradox explains why farm worker problems often worsen
as the agricultural sector shrinks, and lays out options to help
vulnerable workers. Analysis of farm labor markets in the US,
Mexico, and other countries shows that unions and fair trade
efforts to protect farm workers cover a very small share of all
workers and are unlikely to expand quickly. Most labor-intensive
fruits and vegetables are eaten fresh. Unsafe food that sickened
consumers led to voluntary industry and later government-mandated
food safety programs to ensure that food is safe when it leaves the
farm, with protocols enforced by both government inspectors and
buyers who refused to buy from non-compliant farms. This food
safety model offers the most promise to launch a new era in
protective labor policies.
Why have ninety million workers around the globe left their homes
for employment in other countries? What can be done to ensure that
international labor migration is a force for global betterment?
This groundbreaking book presents the most comprehensive analysis
of the causes and effects of labor migration available, and it
recommends sensible, sustainable migration policies that are fair
to migrants and to the countries that open their doors to them. The
authors survey recent trends in international migration for
employment and demonstrate that the flow of authorized and illegal
workers over borders presents a formidable challenge in countries
and regions throughout the world. They note that not all migration
is from undeveloped to developed countries and discuss the murky
relations between immigration policies and politics. The book
concludes with specific recommendations for justly managing the
world's growing migrant workforce.
The Most Dreadful Witness is a novel about two ill-matched guardian
angels who've been given the task of looking after a hard drinking
college professor. The setting is a small college town in western
Kansas, and the professor in question is a psychology professor.
Woody Pickens is married, has two children, and a good job. But he
also has a drinking problem that is steadily dragging him down.
Doug "Salty" Anderson, the senior guardian angel, has been on the
job for fourteen years. He's a former professional rodeo cowboy
from Texas, and a military officer who was killed in action in
Vietnam. The job of guarding Woody has become more than he can
handle, and he starts making repeated requests for a partner. The
Central Office for Custodial Services finally relents and sends in
Dewey Davvison, a former haridresser from Chicago. The two men,
needless to say, don't see eye to eye when it comes to guarding
Woody Pickens. And guarding this particular college professor is no
easy chore. Woody is reckless and sometimes self-destructive, but
his escapades are often humorous. This novel examines the causes
behind his heavy drinking and rude behavior - his family history,
rocky marriage, involvment in campus politics, and friendships and
associations. Humor is intended, but the book is filled with
serious discussions between the two guardian angels. Dewey is a
sensitive, intelligent, thoughtful individual, while Salty is a
more practical but somewhat crude man. They clash on occasions, but
a fond friendship develops between them, due in part to a coming
together of ideas and common concerns. This narrative is not a
roller coaster ride through the life and times of a rowdy college
professor. It is more a progression of events and circumstances
leading toward a climactic ending. And more importantly, although
it is strictly fiction, it is a story that could have happened.
American agriculture employs some 2.5 million workers during a
typical year, most for fewer than six months. Three fourths of
these farm workers are immigrants, half are unauthorized, and most
will leave seasonal farm work within a decade. What do these
statistics mean for farmers, for laborers, for rural America? This
book addresses the question by reviewing what is happening on farms
and in the towns and cities where immigrant farm workers settle
with their families. Philip Martin finds that the business-labor
model that has evolved in rural America is neither desirable nor
sustainable. He proposes regularizing U.S. farm workers and
rationalizing the farm labor market, an approach that will help
American farmers stay globally competitive while also improving
conditions for farm workers.
