Anyone reading Shakespeare's sonnets will notice how often they speak of self-love. This is the central theme of Philip Martin's study, which uses detailed analysis of selected sonnets and groups of sonnets to bring out what they can tell us of 'Shakespeare's feeling for selfhood', good and bad kinds of self-love, different kinds of love for another, the relation of these different kinds of love to the world of natural growth and temporal succession, and finally the ways in which art can properly be defined as a form of love. The study begins by considering self-love in relation to the youth and the poet, and goes on to consider the sonnet as a form through a comparison of Shakespeare and Donne. He concludes that the poems enforce recognition of the fact that art, though of far-reaching importance, is not as important as the life that it serves and fosters.

Why do farm workers become more vulnerable as countries get richer? As countries get richer, the share of workers employed in agriculture falls. In richer countries, hired farm workers do ever more of the work on the fewer and larger farms that produce most farm commodities. These hired workers are among the most vulnerable. They include local workers who lack the skills and contacts needed to get nonfarm jobs that usually offer higher wages and more opportunities as well as legal and unauthorized migrants from poorer countries who may not know or exercise their labor-related rights. Government enforcement of labor laws depends on complaints, and vulnerable workers rarely complain. The Prosperity Paradox explains why farm worker problems often worsen as the agricultural sector shrinks, and lays out options to help vulnerable workers. Analysis of farm labor markets in the US, Mexico, and other countries shows that unions and fair trade efforts to protect farm workers cover a very small share of all workers and are unlikely to expand quickly. Most labor-intensive fruits and vegetables are eaten fresh. Unsafe food that sickened consumers led to voluntary industry and later government-mandated food safety programs to ensure that food is safe when it leaves the farm, with protocols enforced by both government inspectors and buyers who refused to buy from non-compliant farms. This food safety model offers the most promise to launch a new era in protective labor policies.
Another adventure for everyone's favourite Time Lord. The TARDIS is low on Zyton 7, and the only planet with the ore available is Varos. Upon landing, the Doctor (Colin Baker) and Peri discover a society addicted to real life TV violence, ruled by a corrupt regime. They have to help the rebel Jondar and thwart the Thoros Betan delegate, Sil, in his attempts to obtain the Zyton for his own conglomerate.
The longest 'Doctor Who' story ever. The Doctor (Colin Baker) is put on trial by his people the Time Lords for interference in the affairs of others; three segments of his past and future are presented as evidence. 'The Mysterious Planet' shows the Doctor and Peri (Nicola Bryant) in a battle with a megalomaniac machine on the planet Ravalox, but what are the mysterious 'secrets' it protects? 'Mindwarp' shows the Doctor apparently betraying Peri to the vile Sil (Nabil Shaban) and the Mentors - can the Matrix be falsifying the evidence against the Doctor? In his defence he presents 'Terror of the Vervoids', a future story where the Earth is threatened by evil plant life forms. In the final two episodes, 'The Ultimate Foe', the Doctor learns the truth about his prosecuting counsel, the Valeyard (Michael Jayston), and has to enter the Matrix to battle for his remaining lives. This was Colin Baker's last story as the Doctor.
In need of Zeiton-7 to repair the TARDIS, the Doctor and Peri travel to the planet Varos. A former prison for the criminally insane, Varos is now ruled by the descendents of the guards. The population is kept in check and entertained by broadcasts of torture and execution from the Punishment Dome - where the TARDIS lands. Soon the Doctor and Peri, together with rebel fugitives Jondar and Areta, find themselves trying to escape the Dome's traps and challenges - all on live television. Can the Doctor and Peri escape the Punishment Dome, and help the Governor ensure the people of Varos get a fair deal for their Zeiton-7? This novel is based on a Doctor Who story which was originally broadcast from 19-26 January 1975. Featuring the Sixth Doctor as played by Colin Baker with his companion Peri
American agriculture employs some 2.5 million workers during a typical year, most for fewer than six months. Three fourths of these farm workers are immigrants, half are unauthorized, and most will leave seasonal farm work within a decade. What do these statistics mean for farmers, for laborers, for rural America? This book addresses the question by reviewing what is happening on farms and in the towns and cities where immigrant farm workers settle with their families. Philip Martin finds that the business-labor model that has evolved in rural America is neither desirable nor sustainable. He proposes regularizing U.S. farm workers and rationalizing the farm labor market, an approach that will help American farmers stay globally competitive while also improving conditions for farm workers.
The Christmas Cowboy (and Two Other Stories) is a book of adventure, but there's more to it than action. It's about a professional saddle bronc rider making his final trip to the National Finals Rodeo. He goes to Las Vegas with a wounded heart and a bad knee, and his chances of winning are slim. But he agrees to do some public relations work, a trip to a burn center, and there he meets a remarkable boy. This is a turning point for him. It is also the story of a bucking horse, one that few men have been able to ride. Our cowboy draws him in the final round, which makes for a dramatic ending. Topock, a short story, is also about a bronc rider dealing with some life shattering difficulties. But he finds a badly injured dog and rescues it. The dog heals, but it takes some time for the man and dog to make friends. But the dog turns out to be an extraordinary animal, and the most loyal friend a man could ever have, and dealing with him changes the man's life. In Escape From Cloud Canyon, we deal with an elderly man who becomes rebellious. He too is suffering from some setbacks, and his irresponsible actions get him sentenced to a security retirement village. There he makes a promise to a dying friend, and this prompts him to plot an escape. It is a story of a man saved by people who care enough about him to work hard at bringing about a change of heart and mind. So in all, these three stories are about recovery through discovery. There is some sadness involved here, lots of action and adventure, but there's also some humor . . . and for sure there's a message in each story.
Charlie the Booger is a delightful and entertaining story by John Arbour, with illustrations by Philip Martin, presenting Charlie's humorous journey as he explores parts of the city further afield than his home uptown in the Nose. The story brings to life a series of unfamiliar places, accidental discoveries, and unforgettable new friends as it creates an appreciation of our differences and reaffirms the value of inclusiveness, understanding, and caring. Pre-teens and younger readers alike will fall for the loveable Charlie and, through his perspective, will see the importance of keeping an open mind and an accepting outlook when navigating the diversity of identities and cultures that make up the world today.
Fruit and vegetable production is a labor-intensive process, and over half of the hired workers employed by growers are believed to be unauthorized immigrants. Reforms to immigration laws, if they reduce the labor supply, may increase the cost of farm labor. The authors of this report assess how particular fruit and vegetable commodities might adjust if labor rates increased. Analysis of case studies suggests a range of possible adjustment scenarios, including increased mechanization for some crops, reduced U.S. output for a few crops, and increased use of labor aids to improve labor productivity for others.
The Most Dreadful Witness is a novel about two ill-matched guardian angels who've been given the task of looking after a hard drinking college professor. The setting is a small college town in western Kansas, and the professor in question is a psychology professor. Woody Pickens is married, has two children, and a good job. But he also has a drinking problem that is steadily dragging him down. Doug "Salty" Anderson, the senior guardian angel, has been on the job for fourteen years. He's a former professional rodeo cowboy from Texas, and a military officer who was killed in action in Vietnam. The job of guarding Woody has become more than he can handle, and he starts making repeated requests for a partner. The Central Office for Custodial Services finally relents and sends in Dewey Davvison, a former haridresser from Chicago. The two men, needless to say, don't see eye to eye when it comes to guarding Woody Pickens. And guarding this particular college professor is no easy chore. Woody is reckless and sometimes self-destructive, but his escapades are often humorous. This novel examines the causes behind his heavy drinking and rude behavior - his family history, rocky marriage, involvment in campus politics, and friendships and associations. Humor is intended, but the book is filled with serious discussions between the two guardian angels. Dewey is a sensitive, intelligent, thoughtful individual, while Salty is a more practical but somewhat crude man. They clash on occasions, but a fond friendship develops between them, due in part to a coming together of ideas and common concerns. This narrative is not a roller coaster ride through the life and times of a rowdy college professor. It is more a progression of events and circumstances leading toward a climactic ending. And more importantly, although it is strictly fiction, it is a story that could have happened.
