Here's a broad, integrated view of existing communications
technologies available world-wide -- including the Internet and
Web, digital mobile telephony, ISDN, SMDS, frame relay, and ATM --
from a practical business perspective. Covering both private and
public networks, the book offers a basic explanation of a wide
range of technologies and describes their underlying principles and
features, as well as the factors that differentiate them. The guide
also showcases typical applications, exposes inherent limitations,
explains pricing and methods of comparison, and discusses security
pitfalls and protection systems.
This is an open access book which explores phenomenology as both an
exceptionally diverse movement in philosophy as well as an active
research method that crosses disciplinary boundaries. The volume
brings together lively overviews of major areas and schools of
phenomenology, as well as the most recent applications across a
range of fields. The first part reviews the state-of-the-art
in various areas of contemporary phenomenology, including several
distinct schools of Husserl and Heidegger scholarship, as well as
approaches derived from Merleau-Ponty, de Beauvoir, Fanon, and
others. An innovative quantitative analysis of citation networks
provides rich visualizations of the field as a whole. The second
part showcases phenomenology as a living discipline that can
advance research in other areas. While some areas of interaction
between phenomenology and other disciplines are by now well
established (e.g. cognitive science), this volume sheds light on
newer areas of application. The goal is to move beyond discussions
of philosophical method and highlight scholars who are actually
doing phenomenology in a variety of areas, including:Â Â
Embodiment and questions of gender, race, and identity, The
arts (visual art, literature, architecture), and Archaeology
and anthropology.  This volume offers a concise
introduction to cutting edge phenomenological research and is
suitable for both students and specialists.Â
'The Anthem Companion to Hannah Arendt' offers the best
contemporary work on Hannah Arendt, written by the best scholars
currently working in this field. Original, authoritative and
wide-ranging, the critical assessments of this volume will make it
ideal for Arendt students and scholars alike.
'Anthem Companions to Sociology' offer authoritative and
comprehensive assessments of major figures in the development of
sociology from the last two centuries. Covering the major
advancements in sociological thought, these companions offer
critical evaluations of key figures in the American and European
sociological tradition, and will provide students and scholars with
both an in-depth assessment of the makers of sociology and chart
their relevance to modern society.
Corporate responsibility and sustainable development are two
concepts that may be able to reconcile many of the big challenges
facing the world; challenges such as tensions between respect for
the natural environment, social justice, and economic development;
the long view versus short-term imperatives and the competing
priorities between developed and developing economies. This book
explores the gaps and overlaps between corporate responsibility and
sustainable development. These concerns overlap because they
implicate corporate practices, state development policy challenges,
the concerns and priorities of non-governmental organisations, and
the potential for innovative forms of organisation to address these
challenges. This collection examines these questions in terms of
tensions and interdependencies, between competing claims to
resources, rights and responsibilities, strategy and governance,
between public and private interest, and the implications for
equity and the common good over the long term. This is a valuable
resource for researchers, lecturers, practitioners, postgraduate
and final year undergraduates in business strategy, international
business and international management, public sector policy and
management, international development, political economy. It is
also suitable for more specialist courses on sustainability,
corporate responsibility, governance and international development.
Hannah Arendt is today widely regarded today as a political
theorist, who sought to rescue politics from society, and political
theory from the social sciences. But this view has had the effect
of distracting attention from many of Arendt's most important
insights concerning the constitution of society, and the
significance of its 'science', sociology. Arendt Contra Sociology
re-assesses the relationship between Arendt's work and the
theoretical foundations of sociology, bringing her insights to bear
on some key themes within contemporary theoretical sociology.
Re-reading Arendt's distinctions between labour, fabrication and
action as a theory of the fundamental ontology of human societies,
this book assesses her criticism of the tendency of many
sociological paradigms to conflate the activity of fabrication with
that of action. It re-examines Arendt's understanding of central
areas of research within contemporary theoretical sociology -
including the meaning of power, the trajectory of modern science,
the rise of consumerism and the problem of reflexivity. This volume
offers a comprehensive reconstruction of Arendt's thought,
uncovering its refutation of, or latent contribution to, key
sociological approaches. It will be of interest to sociologists,
social and political theorists and philosophers of social science.
This 1911 publication, translated from the French, vividly
describes the varied hardships and satisfactions of Antarctic
exploration and scientific research in the early twentieth century.
Son of the famed neurologist, Jean-Baptiste Charcot (1867-1936)
commanded the Pourquoi-Pas? on its hazardous journey into the
ice-bound regions south of Cape Horn. Illustrated with numerous
photographs, his journal entries provide a rich account of daily
life aboard the ship and out on the ice, including encounters with
seals and penguins, and Christmases gathered around a cardboard
tree. Building on the advances made by previous expeditions,
including his own on the Francais (1903-5), Charcot and his men,
ranging in their expertise from astronomy to zoology, set out to
further push back the boundaries of the unknown 'for the honour of
French science'. The precise mapping of more than a thousand miles
of Antarctic coastline ranked as one of the expedition's foremost
achievements.
