Achieving Sustainable Cultivation of Ornamental Plants (Hardcover): Michael Reid Achieving Sustainable Cultivation of Ornamental Plants (Hardcover)
Michael Reid; Contributions by John Erwin, Yoo Gyeong Park, Young Hoon Park, Abinaya Manivannan, …
R4,764 Discovery Miles 47 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ornamental plants are plants grown for decorative purposes. They include cut flowers, bulbs, potted plants, shrubs and trees for gardening and landscape design. Like other crops, ornamentals face challenges such as biotic and abiotic stresses as well as the need to develop more sustainable, 'climate-smart' methods of cultivation. This collection reviews the rich range of research addressing these challenges. Part 1 discusses advances in understanding plant physiology, genetic diversity and breeding techniques. Chapters cover recent research on how plants respond to abiotic stress, ways of exploiting genetic diversity to improve target traits, advances in both conventional and marker-assisted breeding techniques, as well as their use to produce abiotic stress-resistant varieties. Part 2 surveys advances in cultivation techniques in such areas as nutrition, irrigation, protected cultivation and integrated disease management.

An introductory text on the analysis, control, and estimation of nonlinear systems, appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate students This self-contained and accessible introduction to the concepts and techniques used for nonlinear feedback systems offers a holistic treatment suitable for use in both advanced undergraduate and graduate courses; students need only some familiarity with differential equations and linear algebra to understand the material presented. The text begins with an overview of stability and Lyapunov methods for nonlinear systems, with Lyapunov’s second method revisited throughout the book as a connective thread. Other introductory chapters cover linear systems, frequency domain methods, and discrete-time systems. Building on this background material, the book provides a broad introduction to the basic ideas underpinning major themes of research in nonlinear control, including input-to-state stability, sliding mode control, adaptive control, feedback linearization, and robust output regulation. Chapters also cover observer design and estimation for nonlinear systems. The text is notable for its coverage of nonlinear model predictive control and its introduction to the use of linear matrix inequalities and semidefinite programming coupled with their use in modern antiwindup designs. • First text on nonlinear control appropriate for undergraduates • Suitable both for students preparing for rigorous graduate study and for those entering technical fields outside of academia • Unique in its coverage of recent research topics • Pedagogical features including extensive chapter summaries, examples, and appendixes with definitions, results, and MATLAB applications

Lyapunov methods have been and are still one of the main tools to analyze the stability properties of dynamical systems. In this monograph, Lyapunov results characterizing the stability and stability of the origin of differential inclusions are reviewed. To characterize instability and destabilizability, Lyapunov-like functions, called Chetaev and control Chetaev functions in the monograph, are introduced. Based on their definition and by mirroring existing results on stability, analogue results for instability are derived. Moreover, by looking at the dynamics of a differential inclusion in backward time, similarities and differences between stability of the origin in forward time and instability in backward time, and vice versa, are discussed. Similarly, the invariance of the stability and instability properties of the equilibria of differential equations with respect to scaling are summarized. As a final result, ideas combining control Lyapunov and control Chetaev functions to simultaneously guarantee stability, i.e., convergence, and instability, i.e., avoidance, are outlined. The work is addressed at researchers working in control as well as graduate students in control engineering and applied mathematics.
