Materials for Low-Temperature Fuel Cells (Hardcover): Bradley Ladewig, San Ping Jiang, Yushan Yan Materials for Low-Temperature Fuel Cells (Hardcover)
Bradley Ladewig, San Ping Jiang, Yushan Yan; Series edited by Max Lu
R3,271 Discovery Miles 32 710 Out of stock

There are a large number of books available on fuel cells; however, the majority are on specific types of fuel cells such as solid oxide fuel cells, proton exchange membrane fuel cells, or on specific technical aspects of fuel cells, e.g., the system or stack engineering. Thus, there is a need for a book focused on materials requirements in fuel cells. Key Materials in Low-Temperature Fuel Cells is a concise source of the most important and key materials and catalysts in low-temperature fuel cells. A related book will cover key materials in high-temperature fuel cells. The two books form part of the "Materials for Sustainable Energy & Development" series.
Key Materials in Low-Temperature Fuel Cells brings together world leaders and experts in this field and provides a lucid description of the materials assessment of fuel cell technologies. With an emphasis on the technical development and applications of key materials in low-temperature fuel cells, this text covers fundamental principles, advancement, challenges, and important current research themes. Topics covered include: proton exchange membrane fuel cells, direct methanol and ethanol fuel cells, microfluidic fuel cells, biofuel cells, alkaline membrane fuel cells, functionalized carbon nanotubes as catalyst supports, nanostructured Pt catalysts, non-PGM catalysts, membranes, and materials modeling.
This book is an essential reference source for researchers, engineers and technicians in academia, research institutes and industry working in the fields of fuel cells, energy materials, electrochemistry and materials science and engineering.

Human Capital, Trade and Public Policy in Rapidly Growing Economies - From Theory to Empirics (Hardcover): Michele Boldrin,... Human Capital, Trade and Public Policy in Rapidly Growing Economies - From Theory to Empirics (Hardcover)
Michele Boldrin, Been-Lon Chen, Ping Wang
R3,540 Discovery Miles 35 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Human Capital, Trade and Public Policy in Rapidly Growing Economies argues that only two centuries ago, no society had ever enjoyed sustained growth in living standards. The contributors to this book aim to discover why the world today exhibits a predilection for perpetual self-improvement.In particular, the book focuses on the forces underlying long-lasting growth in East Asia's Newly Industrialized Countries (NICs). Drawing from the experiences of Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan, it questions whether public policy can contribute to removing barriers towards accumulation of wealth, and if so, what development policy should be put in place to remedy the existing distortions or market failure problems. Theoretical and empirical analyses are also used to broach other important issues, such as: Why do some economies experience growth while others decline? What are the major determinants of long-term growth and development? Is human capital the main driving force? Does international trade play a crucial role? This book will appeal to those with an interest in development and public policy.

This up-to-date review closes an important gap in the existing literature by providing a comprehensive description of the applications of MAssbauer effect in lattice dynamics, along with a collection of applications in metals, alloys, amorphous solids, molecular crystals, thin films, and nanocrystals. It is the first book to systematically compare MAssbauer spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation to conventional MAssbauer spectroscopy, discussing in detail its advantages and capabilities, backed by the latest theoretical developments and experimental examples.
Intended as a self-contained volume that may be used as a complete reference or textbook, 'MAssbauer Effect in Lattice Dynamics' adopts new pedagogical approaches with several non-traditional and refreshing theoretical expositions, while all quantitative relations are derived with the necessary details so as to be easily followed by the reader. Two entire chapters are devoted to the study of the dynamics of impurity atoms in solids, while a thorough description of the Mannheim model as a theoretical method is presented and its predictions compared to experimental results. Finally, an in-depth analysis of absorption of MAssbauer radiation is presented, based on recent research by one of the authors, resulting in an exact expression of fractional absorption and a method to determine the optimal thickness of an absorber.
Supplemented by elaborate appendices containing constants and parameters.

Land of Big Numbers (Paperback): Te Ping Chen Land of Big Numbers (Paperback)
Te Ping Chen
R190 Discovery Miles 1 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'Te-Ping Chen's Land of Big Numbers contains 10 illuminating, sharp stories set in China, penned by a former investigative reporter who worked in Beijing for several years' The Independent 'In this magnificent collection of stories, the author and former Beijing-based correspondent vividly captures the desires and losses of a richly drawn cast while drawing on the realities of contemporary China' Cosmopolitan A dazzling debut collection which, deftly and urgently, tells the stories of those living in the biggest and most complicated country on earth. A brother competes for gaming glory while his twin sister exposes the dark side of the Communist government on her underground blog; a worker at a government call centre is alarmed one day to find herself speaking to a former lover; a delicious new fruit arrives at the neighbourhood market and the locals find it starts to affect their lives in ways they could never have imagined; and a young woman's dreams of making it big in Shanghai are stalled when she finds herself working as a florist. These are just some of the myriad lives to be evoked in The Land of Big Numbers, a collection of stories which - sometimes playfully, sometimes darkly - draws back the curtain on the realities of modern China and unveils a cast of characters as rich and complicated as any in world literature. With virtuosic brilliance, Te-ping Chen sheds light on a country much talked about but little understood and announces the birth of a bright new star in the literary firmament. "A spectacular work, comic, timely, profound. Te-Ping Chen has a superb eye for detail in a China where transformation occurs simultaneously too fast and too slow for lives in pursuit of meaning in a brave new world. Her characters are achingly alive. It's rare to read a collection so satisfying, where every story adds to a gripping and intricate world." Madeleine Thien, author of the Booker-shortlisted Do Not Say We Have Nothing "Te-Ping Chen shows us how much life, loss, and quiet pleasure exists in the world, just out of view." Alexandra Kleeman

A History of Journalism and Communication in China (Hardcover): Yunze Zhao, Ping Sun A History of Journalism and Communication in China (Hardcover)
Yunze Zhao, Ping Sun
R4,578 Discovery Miles 45 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From a modern perspective, journalism is highly relevant to modern society, along with the emergence of mass printing system and professionalisation. This book, however, expands the meaning of journalism and views it as a social process. It will not only explore the roots and development of Chinese journalism and communication, but also demonstrate how Chinese journalism and communication interact and struggle with social culture and politics. Arranged in chronological order mainly, this book examines the initial development of Chinese journalism in ancient times in chapter 1, which from then manifested strong political attributes. After the Opium War in 1840, missionaries and businessmen from the West started to set up newspapers and periodicals in China, which brought about the birth of China's modern journalism industry. Then China's private newspapers and political party's press are studied, which are closely linked with political revolutions and have a far-reaching impact on modern Chinese society. What happened to Chinese journalism and communication after the founding of People's Republic of China in 1949? This book reviews the newspaper reforms, and studies the great negative impacts brought by "Cultural Revolution". Noteworthy news phenomena after the reform and opening-up are also covered. This book will appeal to scholars and students in journalism, communication and Chinese studies. Readers interested in Chinese society and modern Chinese history will also be attracted by it.

Now streamlined from previous editions, a new author team brings in a fresh look to this classic textbook and at how graph theory courses have evolved. When the first edition of this precursor text was published, there were few undergraduate courses offered. The text assisted in the establishment of the undergraduate course, while also offering enough coverage for a graduate course. Graph theory is not a seminal course in all combinatorics programs taught in universities and colleges throughout the world. This text has remained among the top three best-sellers. The book is famous for the quality of the writing and presentation. We have two best-sellers for his course, including Gross, etal.'s Graph Theory and Its Applications. This one-two punch in this course means we can go against any and all texts and compete successfully.

China's New Imperialism - Nature, Causes, and Rationalization (Paperback): Yu-Ping Chang China's New Imperialism - Nature, Causes, and Rationalization (Paperback)
Yu-Ping Chang
R1,215 Discovery Miles 12 150 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book discusses the nature of China's current international reassertion of itself, and the thinking and attitudes which lie behind it. It argues that the Chinese leadership has a strongly held view of its own high moral authority, which emphasises inclusion, equality and mutual benefits, and that this sense of morality underpins the driving forces for China's foreign policies, the geo-strategic reasoning for outward expansion, China's strategic culture, the idealistic rationalization of China's overseas activities, the overall Chinese worldview, and China's vision of the Chinese world order. Based on original research into both writings for policy-making purposes, which indicate realistic assessments of world politics and of China's international capacity, and also narratives for public consumption, which have less emphasis on self-interest and realpolitik, the book approaches the subject empirically, and not through the lens of any international relations theory. It highlights how China's outward expansion has been characterized mainly by spreading influence through non-use of force, and strategies of "inclusiveness", "co-operation" and "winning without fighting". The book concludes however that Beijing's self-privileging high morality may have the unfortunate consequence of reinforcing its own behaviour which defies international order and which others disapprove of, thereby increasing the likelihood of non-armed and armed conflicts.

Nationalism and Decolonisation in Singapore - The Malayan Generation, 1953 – 1963: Thum Ping Tjin Nationalism and Decolonisation in Singapore - The Malayan Generation, 1953 – 1963
Thum Ping Tjin
R4,145 Discovery Miles 41 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nationalism and Decolonisation in Singapore analyses Singapore’s decolonisation movement between 1953-63 and provides a framework to understand the deepest and most important unresolved conflicts in Singaporean society. This book demonstrates how these conflicts stem from four unresolved schisms dating from the decolonisation period: race, class, language, and the meaning of self-determination. The author argues that these schisms drove the events of decolonisation, the creation of Malaysia, and Singapore’s separation, and continue to actively shape Singapore today. Using contemporary English- and Chinese-language sources from a wide array of perspectives, as well as numerous declassified official documents, this book provides a new approach to the most formative period of Singapore history. It explains in detail the different ideologies, institutions, and conflicts which shaped Singaporean politics and society during decolonisation. In particular, the book focuses on the leaders of the main groups which most heavily influenced Singapore's anti-colonial nationalism – the Chinese-speaking, the working class, and left-wing intellectuals. It looks at Singapore in the context of global movements of nationalism, socialism, and decolonisation, and provides a framework which can offer insight into similar attempts by post-colonial governments to construct new nation-states from plural societies. A novel study of Singapore’s independence struggle that incorporates and analyses multiple linguistic, socioeconomic, and political viewpoints, the book will be of interest to researchers of Southeast Asian History and Politics, and those interested in decolonisation, nationalism, identity, and the politics of race, class, and language.

Planning and Housing in the Rapidly Urbanising World (Hardcover, annotated edition): Paul Jenkins, Harry Smith, Ya Ping Wang Planning and Housing in the Rapidly Urbanising World (Hardcover, annotated edition)
Paul Jenkins, Harry Smith, Ya Ping Wang
R5,513 Discovery Miles 55 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Throughout the world there is an increasing movement of populations into urban areas and cities. As a result the demographic, economic, social and cultural characteristics of urban areas are changing, particularly in countries undergoing rapid urbanization. This book explores the different approaches to this internationally within the fields of housing and urban planning with a particular focus on developing countries. Concepts such as "informal settlements,""shelter" and "housing deficit" are explained. The impact of rapid urbanization and associated globalization on land use and housing is described and analyzed with reference to the related issues of poverty, health and the environment.
The authors examine the evolving relationship between development strategies and urban planning using a series of international case studies of planning and housing in Latin America; Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Particular consideration is given to how the discourse of "sustainability" is used within thecontext of continuing urbanization, policy and practice. The theoretical issues underpinning "sustainability" as a concept are outlined, and their implications for urban development in terms of both the "green" and "brown" agendas are described.
"Planning and Housing in Developing Countries "provides an accessible introduction to the issues as well as enhancing current theoretical debates. It explores the theories in the fields of housing and planning and examines how this relates to the practical application with a focus on developing countries. The book includes an annotated bibliography as a useful study tool for students in this area.

Coupled Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics - From El Nino to Climate Change (Paperback): Shang-Ping Xie Coupled Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics - From El Nino to Climate Change (Paperback)
Shang-Ping Xie
R2,233 Discovery Miles 22 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Coupled Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics of Climate Variability and Climate Change presents the patterns, mechanisms, and predictability of climate variability and anthropogenic climate change. Based on a graduate course the author has taught over 25 years, this book provides the physical foundation for those who are interested in fundamental questions such as: why climate varies from one year to another; how predictable climate is; and how climate will change in the face of increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This is the first comprehensive and systematic treatment of this subject that simultaneously draws on the latest research and is accessible for graduate students. The book takes a step-by-step systematic approach to coupled ocean-atmosphere interactions. This allows a wide range of comparative views: climate modes among and across different tropical ocean basins, ocean feedback on the atmosphere (in and out of the tropics), and spontaneous internal oscillation versus externally forced climate change. Such comparative views offer unprecedented insight into the dynamics of climate variability and predictability. This book can be used as supplementary reading for advanced undergraduate students, as coursework in climate dynamics, modeling, variability, and change, and as a reference book and research monograph for researchers in ocean, atmospheric, climate, and earth system sciences.

China's New Imperialism - Nature, Causes, and Rationalization (Hardcover): Yu-Ping Chang China's New Imperialism - Nature, Causes, and Rationalization (Hardcover)
Yu-Ping Chang
R3,839 Discovery Miles 38 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ping-Chiu Yen
R956 Discovery Miles 9 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book, first published in 1990, is a thematic analysis of five tales of early vernacular Chinese literature. Interest in vernacular stories is increasing in the study of Chinese literature, as their importance is being recognised as a key part of the oral traditional narrative. From the analysis of the five Chinese tales in light of literary, historical, philological sources and folkloristic methodologies we may see to what extent tales of an intrinsically religious nature can offer meanings in the oral tradition.

This book offers a new insight into one of the most interesting and long-lived institutions known to historians of science, the Chinese imperial Astronomical Bureau, which for two millennia observed, recorded, interpreted and predicted the movements of the celestial bodies. Utilising archival material, such as the resumes written for imperial audiences and personnel administration records, the book traces the rise and fall of more than thirty hereditary families serving at the Astronomical Bureau from the late Ming period to the end of the Qing dynasty. The book also presents an in-depth view into the organisation and function of the Bureau and succinctly charts the impacts of historical developments during the Ming and Qing periods, including the Regency of Prince Dorgon, the influence of the Jesuits, the relationship between the Kangxi and Yongzheng emperors and the He family and the failure of the bureau to predict correctly the solar eclipse of 1730. Presenting a social history of the Qing Astronomical Bureau from the perspective of hereditary astronomer families, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of Chinese Imperial history, the history of science and Asian history.
