Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Security and Protection against CBRN Threats (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Plamen Petkov,... Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Security and Protection against CBRN Threats (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Plamen Petkov, Mohammed Essaid Achour, Cyril Popov
R4,321 Discovery Miles 43 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is based on the lectures and contributions of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Security and Protection Against CBRN Threats" held in Sozopol, Bulgaria, September 2019. It gives a broad overview on this topic as it combines articles addressing the preparation and characterization of different nanoscaled materials (metals, oxides, glasses, polymers, carbon-based, etc.) in the form of nanowires, nanoparticles, nanocomposites, nanodots, thin films, etc. and contributions on their applications in diverse security and safety related fields. In addition, it presents an interdisciplinary approach drawing on the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology know-how of authors from Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science and Biology. A further plus-point of the book, which represents the knowledge of experts from over 20 countries, is the combination of longer papers introducing the background on a certain topic, and brief contributions highlighting specific applications in different security areas.

Readers are provided with a broad overview on the topic as it combines articles addressing the preparation and characterization of different nano-scaled materials (metals, oxides, glasses, polymers, carbon-based, etc.). The contributions derive from the lectures and contributions of the NATO Advanced Study Institute meeting "Nanoscience Advances in CBRN Agents Detection, Information and Energy Security" held in Sozopol, Bulgaria, 29 May - 6 June, 2014. In addition, it presents an interdisciplinary approach, utilizing Nanoscience and Nanotechnology research from different disciplines including; physics, chemistry, engineering, materials science and biology. A major advantage of this book, which represents the knowledge of experts from 20 countries, is the combination of longer papers introducing the basic knowledge on a certain topic, and brief contributions highlighting specific applications in different security areas.

R8,382 Discovery Miles 83 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, based on the lectures and contributions of the NATO ASIon Functional Properties of Nanostructured Materials, gives a broadoverview on this topic, as it combines basic theoretical articles, papersdealing with experimental techniques, and contributions on advancedand up-to-date applications in fields such as microelectronics, optoelectronics, electrochemistry, sensorics, and biotechnology. Inaddition, it presents an interdisciplinary approach since the authorscame from such different fields as physics, chemistry, engineering, materials science and biology. Some emphasis is given to the field ofnanostructured/nanoscaled thin films, again stretching from basictheoretical over experimental (including both fabrication andcharacterization) to application oriented topic

Nanoscience and Nanotechnology are experiencing a rapid development in many aspects, like real-space atomic-scale imaging, atomic and molecular manipulation, nano-fabrication, etc. , which will have a profound impact not only in every field of research, but also on everyday life in the twenty-first century. The common efforts of researchers from different countries and fields of science can bring complementary expertise to solve the rising problems in order to take advantage of the nanoscale approaches in Materials Science. Nanostructured materials, i. e. materials made with atomic accuracy, show unique properties as a consequence of nanoscale size confinement, predominance of interfacial phenomena and quantum effects. Therefore, by reducing the dimensions of a structure to nanosize, many inconceivable properties will appear and may lead to different novel applications from na- electronics and nanophotonics to nanobiological systems and nanomedicine. All this requires the contribution of multidisciplinary teams of physicists, chemists, materials scientists, engineers and biologists to work together on the synthesis and processing of nanomaterials and nanostructures, und- standing the properties related to the nanoscale, the design of nano-devices as well as of new tools for the characterization of nano-structured materials. The first objective of the NATO ASI on Nanostructured Materials for Advanced Technological Applications was to assess the up-to-date achie- ments and future perspectives of application of novel nanostructured materials, focusing on the relationships material structure ? functional properties ? possible applications.
