This book is a preliminary attempt to find the correlation between the East Calcutta wetland (ECW) & non East Calcutta Wetland (NCW) site water parameters which however create any threat to aquatic organisms or not. For this the authors compared the distribution patterns of two enzymes, Lactate dehydrogenase LDH] and Malate dehydrogenase MDH] in aerobic tissues from three important major carps Labeo rohita, Catla catla and Cirrhinus mrigala collected from two different sites of West Bengal. Pollutants present in the water bodies and sediments of East Calcutta Wetland (ECW) have not produced significant variations of LDH and MDH isozymes of five important tissues of three major carps except Cirrhinus mrigala. It is found that the water parameters of ECW site poses threat to all major carps studied and the effect is more on Mrigal than on other two carps

Fisheries in Bangladesh play a vital role in the economy, employment generation and nutrition of the people. This sector contributes 3.74% to the GDP, 20.87% to the agricultural income, 58% to the animal protein intake and 4.04% of annual export earnings in Bangladesh. Generally, 10% population of the country including 10 million people is directly or indirectly dependent on fisheries for their livelihood and income. Access right to the fisheries resource by the poor fishers appeared to be ensured under 3 management systems such as: the open access system in the flowing river which is now replaced by licensing system to the genuine fishers, new fisheries management policy providing fishing right to the fishers directly through license by abolishing the middleman and community based fisheries management system by govt organization

The Indian Sundarbans at the apex of Bay of Bengal is basically a deltaic complex and a diversified coastal wetland, harbors a luxuriant biodiversity and acts as a potential refuge of living marine resources. Sundarban has been in the limelight ever since the global community became concerned about the need for Biodiversity conservation, global warming and climate change. This book is intended to covers a wide range of topics, from the environmental point of view, through the various pieces of the social and management systems, to an examination of a set of key themes that dominate climate change and human livelihood, fisheries diversity and fisherfolk, biodiversity conservation, community based co-management and at last future of sundarban as well as legal framework. Of late, there is a global concern regarding the threat posed to Sundarban due to global warming and projected sea level rise.
