This book gathers essays that introduce the ideological advances in
the philosophy of engineering and technology in contemporary China.
It particularly focuses on China's distinctive concepts and
methods, revealing different views and academic debates to offer
readers a comprehensive overview of this important field. The
contributors present unique perspectives based on practical
problems and traditional philosophy, examining such issues and
concepts as axiology and theories of process, the difference
between engineering activities and technology activities, and the
core of the relationship between "Dao" and "Technique." Other
essays cover the ethics of technology, practical wisdom (phronesis)
and practical reasoning, as well as creative concepts and methods
concerning the philosophical problems in high technology,
architectural technology, and technological innovation. The authors
also consider more general issues in the field. This book compiles
the relevant research achievements of Chinese scholars in various
time periods. Some authors have revised and translated into English
papers published in Chinese, while others present their research in
English specifically for this study. An annotated bibliography of
the major publications in the field completes this collection.
This book presents an innovative concept for designing a 400 kV
double circuit composite tower. The major challenges encountered by
the authors in the electrical design process of the composite tower
are addressed. They concern material selection for the full
composite cross-arm core, electrical insulation of the cross-arm,
electrical dimensioning of the full composite tower, lightning
shielding performance and failure of the full composite tower. The
electric field performance of the tower's insulation has been
investigated theoretically by using finite element method and
experimentally by testing different fiber reinforced polymers as
candidates. The book reports in detail those finite element
simulations and tests, together with the authors' recommendations
on the most suitable materials and manufacturing process as well as
conductor clamp designs for the cross-arm. Another important issue
of the full composite tower, which concerns the environmental
aspects of the full composite tower, has also been evaluated. This
book offers a timely reference guide on a highly innovative topic,
addressing researchers working on power transmission system both in
industry and academia.
This book explores the dynamics of the interaction between the
development of creative industries and urban land use in Nanjing, a
metropolis and a growth pole in the Yangtze River Delta. In the
last two decades, China's economy has been undergoing dramatic
growth. Yet, accompanying with China's economic success is
the disturbing environmental deterioration and energy concerns.
These issues together with the diminution of the advantage of
low-cost labour force present many Chinese cities, particularly big
cities specialising in manufacturing in the most developed regions,
the urgency to find new approaches to "creative China". As an
ancient city featured by abundance of cultural heritages and
legacies of heavy industries, Nanjing has been striving for a
decade to transform its economy towards a creative economy by
cultivating creative industries. In parallel with the flourishing
of creative industries are contest for land resources
among different interest parties and restructuring of urban
land use. Both are new challenges for urban planning. This complex
process is examined in this book by an interdisciplinary approach
which integrates GIS, ABM, questionnaire investigation and
interview.Â

Foreword by Phillip V. Tobias The introduction of rhesus macaques
to Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico in 1938, and the subsequent
development of the CPRC for biomedical research, continues its long
history of stimulating studies in physical anthropology. The CPRC
monkey colonies, and the precise demographic data on the derived
skeletal collection in the Center's Laboratory of Primate
Morphology and Genetics (LPMG), provide rare opportunities for
morphological, developmental, functional, genetic, and behavioral
studies across the life span of rhesus macaques as a species, and
as a primate model for humans. The book grows out of a symposium
Wang is organizing for the 78th annual meeting of the American
Association of Physical Anthropologists to be held in April 2009.
This symposium will highlight recent and ongoing research in, or
related to, physical anthropology, and reveal the numerous research
opportunities that still exist at this unusual rhesus facility.
Following an initial historical review of CPRC and its research
activities, this book will emphasize recent and current researches
on growth, function, genetics, pathology, aging, and behavior, and
the impact of these researches on our understanding of rhesus and
human morphology, development, genetics, and behavior. Fourteen
researchers will present recent and current studies on morphology,
genetics, and behavior, with relevance to primate and human growth,
health, and evolution. The book will include not only papers
presented in the symposium, but also papers from individuals who
could not present their work at the meeting due to limitations in
the maximum number (14) of permitted speakers.

Artificial photosynthesis is the process of converting solar energy
into useful fuels and represents a significant achievement in the
production of clean energy for the planet. In the process, energy
is generated from water and CO2 reduction using solar-powered
photocatalysis. This book provides a comprehensive overview of
recently developed, multifunctional materials as visible
light-driven catalysts, their mechanisms and applications in solar
energy utilisation and conversion. Chapters highlight the use of
different approaches such as molecular catalysis, nanomaterials
systems, as well as thin-films for solar-driven evolution of
renewable fuels, such as hydrogen. This is the first book to give
an overview of this area, with chapters specifically interesting
for those looking towards industrial applications. With in-depth
discussions ranging from understanding, to engineering of materials
and applied devices, it will be suitable for industry
professionals, researchers and students interested in understanding
of the current state of photocatalysis research and its possible
applications in the energy domain.
Credit Default Swaps: A Survey is the most comprehensive review of
all major research domains involving credit default swaps (CDS).
CDS have been growing in importance in the global financial
markets. However, their role has been hotly debated, in industry
and academia, particularly since the credit crisis of 2007-2009.
The authors review the extant literature on CDS that has
accumulated over the past two decades and divide the survey into
seven topics after providing a broad overview in the introduction.
The second section traces the historical development of CDS markets
and provides an introduction to CDS contract definitions and
conventions. The third section discusses the pricing of CDS, from
the perspective of no-arbitrage principles, structural, and
reduced-form credit risk models. It also summarizes the literature
on the determinants of CDS spreads, with a focus on the role of
fundamental credit risk factors, liquidity and counterparty risk.
The fourth section discusses how the development of the CDS market
has affected the characteristics of the bond and equity markets,
with an emphasis on market efficiency, Price discovery, information
flow, and liquidity. Attention is also paid to the CDS-bond basis,
the wedge between the pricing of the CDS and its reference bond,
and the mispricing between the CDS and the equity market. The fifth
section examines the effect of CDS trading on firms' credit and
bankruptcy risk, and how it affects corporate financial policy,
including bond issuance, capital structure, liquidity management,
and corporate governance. The sixth section analyzes how CDS impact
the economic incentives of financial intermediaries. The seventh
section reviews the growing literature on sovereign CDS and
highlights the major differences between the sovereign and
corporate CDS markets. The eighth section discusses CDS indices,
especially the role of synthetic CDS index Products backed by
residential mortgage-backed securities during the financial crisis.
The authors close with our suggestions for promising future
research directions on CDS contracts and markets.
