The debate over the Affordable Care Act was one of the most
important and public examinations of the Constitution in our
history. At the forefront of that debate were the legal scholars
blogging at the Volokh Conspiracy, who engaged in a spirited,
erudite, and accessible discussion of the legal issues involved in
the cases - beginning before the law was even passed. Several of
the Volokh bloggers played key roles in developing the
constitutional arguments against the ACA. Their blog posts and
articles about the Act had a significant impact on both the public
debate and the legal arguments in the case. It was perhaps the
first time that a blog affected arguments submitted to the United
States Supreme Court on a major issue. In the process, the bloggers
helped legitimize a new type of legal discourse. This book compiles
the discussion that unfolded at the Volokh Conspiracy blog into a
readable narrative, enhanced with new context and analysis, as the
contributors reflect on the Obamacare litigation with the advantage
of hindsight. The different bloggers certainly did not always agree
with each other, but the back-and-forth debates provide momentum as
the reader follows the development of the arguments over time. A
Conspiracy Against Obamacare exemplifies an important new form of
legal discourse and public intellectualism.
Aging is an almost universal process within biological systems, one
which leads to a decline in functional capacity, disease onset, and
eventually death. There has been much interest in recent years to
elucidate the molecular mec- nisms that underlie the aging process.
Many theories have been proposed since the last century that aim to
explain the causes of aging. There is no one theory that completely
satisfies the phenotype of aging, but genetics and environm- tal
factors play an important role in the etiology of age-related
pathologies and the aging process. However, there is still much to
be learned about the aging process which has been termed one of the
last great frontiers in biology. De- graphic changes worldwide are
leading to increased average life expectancies within our
populations. These changes in population characteristics will
impact upon the economies of the supporting society, with
increasing healthcare and infrastructural costs arising from the
prevalence of age-related pathologies and other physical
disabilities associated with advancing years. Many researchers
worldwide are working in the attempt to identify key cellular
processes through which it might one day be possible to slow down
the aging process and thus increase the health span of humans.
Numerous research projects-from the cellular through to tissue,
organ, and whole organism studies-are currently underway to
investigate the mul- factorial aging process.

This book re-examines the doctrines of res judicata and abuse of process when applied to foreign judgments, and analyses how they are relied upon in English proceedings. The book clearly explains the four main pleas to which a foreign res judicata might give rise in subsequent proceedings in England: cause of action estoppel; issue estoppel; former recovery under section 34 of the Civil Jurisdiction and Judgments Act 1982; and the rule in Henderson v Henderson (1843) 3 Hare 100. It is an area of the law that has frequently been confused and mis-applied in the past, and yet it is an increasingly important area for those interested in international commercial litigation.
Smoking Geographies provides a research-led assessment of the
impact of geographical factors on smoking. The contributors uncover
how geography can show us not only why people smoke but also
broader issues of tobacco control, providing deeper clarity on how
smoking and tobacco is governed . * The text centres on one of the
most important public health issues worldwide, and a major
determinant of preventable mortality and morbidity in developed and
developing countries * Records the outcomes of a long-term research
collaboration that brings a geographical lens to smoking behaviour
* Uncovers how geography can play a part in understanding not only
why people smoke but also broader issues of tobacco control *
Provides a deeper understanding of how smoking and tobacco is
governed , regarding where people may smoke, but also more subtle
governance as a climate is produced in which smoking becomes
denormalised * Brings both quantitative and qualitative
perspectives to bear on this major source of mortality and
morbidity

There is a difference in knowing the Lord's Word and discerning His
voice. This may seem like splitting hairs, but many Christians have
been devastated because they listened to good Scriptures from the
wrong voice. Word Infusion offers selected Scriptures for
meditation as a way for Christians to boost their reverence for the
Word of God which directly impacts our ability to discern His
voice. Living by the Word of His voice creates the means by which
anyone can enjoy divine rest and peace. Use Word Infusion as a
personal devotional, to disciple a new believer or for a small
group study. At one time or another, everyone needs a Word Infusion

All services provide professional military education (PME) to both
resident and non-resident students. The Goldwater-Nichols Act
directs the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) to enhance
the education and training of officers in joint matters. The CJCS
established the Officer Professional Military Education Policy
(OPMEP) requirements to direct service schools to teach joint
doctrine and joint operations within the PME curricula. Service
schools are meeting the minimum OPMEP requirements in an
environment of continuous high paced operations (OPSTEMPO).
Currently, non-resident joint training and education is limited to
reading textbooks about jointness. What is required is an
opportunity for interactive joint training and education. The Air
Force's solution for the future is distance learning. Distance
learning is an excellent teaching method. However, it is deficient
in providing the opportunity for students, enrolled in the
non-resident correspondence and/or seminar program, to interact and
learn from the other services. The other services provide this
opportunity to their non-resident students to prepare them not only
for joint assignment, but also to fill ad hoc Joint Task Force
(JTF) staffs. This type of ad hoc staff is more prevalent in
today's Department of Defense. As the Air Force moves toward the
Air Expeditionary Force (AEF) concept its challenge is to provide
qualified officers trained and educated through the non-resident
program to work in joint staff positions and on ad hoc JTFs. The
Air Force can provide this interaction through a short course for
non-resident students. This course will expose the students to
joint lectures and direct interaction with the other services.
Students will have face-to-face interaction with students and
faculty from sister services in lecture and seminar formats. This
paper details the history of the service schools' current
non-resident requirements and curriculum plans. Highlights include
how the Air Force mee
Colonel Barnett compares the next 15 years to the 15 years between
World Wars I and II. He concludes that the changes between the two
world wars may be dwarfed by those occurring within the next decade
and one-half. He envisions possible wars with niche competitors and
peer competitors, giving theoretical scenarios of each. Colonel
Barnett views communications technology and stealth technology as
keys to victory in future war. Colonel Jeffery R. Barnett, United
States Air Force, is the Military Assistant to the Director, Net
Assessment, Office of the Secretary of Defense. Foreword by Admiral
William A. Owens, United States Navy, Vice Chairman, Joint Chiefs
of Staff.

From the battlefields of Vietnam to the coalmines of Utah, Melanie
explores both the tragedy of war and the dangers of longwall coal
mining. But beyond these two contrasts lies a passionate love
story. In Part I, Tom Ire returns to Oakville, Utah, after twelve
years in the Navy and two tours of duty in Vietnam. He is welcomed
home as a hero, but with both parents now dead, and the horror of
Vietnam still fresh in his memory, starting over is not that easy.
Heartache and tragedy seem to follow him.In Part II Melanie, Tom's
daughter, is caught up in the world of a small coal-mining town.
She finds herself at odds with members of the community church, who
are jealous of both her beauty and intellect. Branded as a whore,
Melanie fights back.Amid her problems with the citizens of
Coaldale, Utah, Melanie meets Richard Garcia, a young mine safety
engineer. Richard becomes involved with Melanie's struggle against
the community church, and finds himself embarrassed by her
behavior. Turmoil deep in the earth's surface along the Wasatch
Fault, lying silent for ten thousand years, is about to explode
