The Major Metaphors of Evolution - Darwinism Then and Now (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Salvatore J. Agosta, Daniel R. Brooks The Major Metaphors of Evolution - Darwinism Then and Now (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Salvatore J. Agosta, Daniel R. Brooks
R4,978 Discovery Miles 49 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a unified evolutionary framework based on three sets of metaphors that will help to consolidate discussions on evolutionary transitions. Evolution is the unifying principle of life, making identifying ways to apply evolutionary principles to tackle existence-threatening crises such as climate change crucial. A more cohesive evolutionary framework will further the discussions in this regard and also accelerate the process itself. This book lays out a framework based on three dualistic classes of metaphors - time, space, and conflict resolution. Evolutionary transitions theory shows how metaphors can help us understand selective diversification, as Darwin described with his "tree of life". Moreover, the recently proposed Stockholm paradigm demonstrates how metaphors can help shed light on the emergence of complex ecosystems that Darwin highlighted with his "tangled bank" metaphor. Taken together, these ideas offer proactive measures for coping with existential crises for humanity, such as climate change. The book will appeal to biologists, philosophers and historians alike.

Contemporary Debates in the Sociology of Education (Hardcover, New): R Brooks, M. McCormack, K. Bhopal Contemporary Debates in the Sociology of Education (Hardcover, New)
R Brooks, M. McCormack, K. Bhopal
R1,860 Discovery Miles 18 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The sociology of education is a vibrant discipline which has been responsible for a number of profound shifts in how we understand society. With innovations in the discipline sitting alongside more traditional lines of enquiry that continue to demand attention, this edited volume brings together some of the most prominent sociologists working in education today to address a wide range of empirical and theoretical issues. Adopting an international perspective, this book foregrounds cutting-edge research that highlights both the diversity and complexity of understanding education in society. Contemporary Debates in the Sociology of Education not only showcases the real strengths of the discipline but, by bringing together original, empirical work by leading scholars, it advances our sociological understanding, acting as a source of stimulation and debate for postgraduate students and academics, as well as a touchstone for undergraduates seeking to engage with the discipline.

Bringing the Sun Down to Earth - Designing Inexpensive Instruments for Monitoring the Atmosphere (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): David... Bringing the Sun Down to Earth - Designing Inexpensive Instruments for Monitoring the Atmosphere (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
David R. Brooks
R2,789 Discovery Miles 27 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1998, my colleague, Forrest Mims, and I began a project to develop inexpensive handheld atmosphere monitoring instruments for the GLOBE Program, an international environmental science and education program that began its operations on Earth Day, 1995. GLOBE's goal was to involve students, teachers, and scientists around the world in authentic partn- ships in which scientists would develop instrumentation and experimental protocols suitable for student use. In return, data collected by students and their teachers would be used by scientists in their research. This kind of collaboration represented a grand vision for science education which had never before been attempted on such a scale, and we embraced this vision with great enthusiasm. Between 1998 and 2006, Forrest Mims and I collaborated on the development of several instruments based on Mims' original concept of using light emitting diodes as spectrally selective detectors of sunlight, which was first published in the peer-reviewed literature in 1992. These instruments have evolved into a set of tools and procedures for monitoring the transmission of sunlight through the atmosphere, and they can be used to learn a great deal about the composition of the atmosphere and the dynamics of the Earth/atmosphere/sun system. If measurements with these instruments are made properly, they have significant scientific value, as well.

An Assessment of Natural Hazards and Disasters in Canada (Hardcover, New edition): David Etkin, C.E. Haque, Gregory R. Brooks An Assessment of Natural Hazards and Disasters in Canada (Hardcover, New edition)
David Etkin, C.E. Haque, Gregory R. Brooks
R4,451 Discovery Miles 44 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The problems and issues of natural hazards and disasters, both globally and in Canada, are becoming increasingly important since the costs of extreme natural events have been escalating, and significant vulnerabilities exist in Canadian society. Without thoughtful and effective mitigation, these costs and human suffering are likely to continue to increase. An assessment of knowledge, research, and practice in risk, hazards and disasters fields is a fundamental step towards the goal of prevention and mitigation.

This book on natural hazards and disasters in Canada is the first comprehensive interdisciplinary publication on this subject, and is the result of a national assessment on this topic. A variety of papers from the physical and social sciences explores both the risks associated with these hazards, and adaptive strategies that can be used to reduce those risks.

Audience: This excellent collection of papers is intended for academics, professionals and practitioners involved in hazard reduction activities who wish to obtain a better understanding of Canadian natural hazards.

Friendship and Educational Choice - Peer Influence and Planning for the Future (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): R Brooks Friendship and Educational Choice - Peer Influence and Planning for the Future (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
R Brooks
R2,780 Discovery Miles 27 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Friendship and Educational Choice provides a unique insight into how young people go about making decisions about their educational options and the subtle, yet crucial, influence of friends and peers on these processes. It argues that focusing on both the impact of friends on educational decisions and the reciprocal influences that such decisions may exert on young people's friendships helps us to understand the significance and impact of educational choice in the wider lives of young people.

Some two million Americans are in jail or in prison. Except for the occasional expose, what happens to them is hidden from the rest of us. Is it possible to develop and instill a professional ethic for prison personnel that, in partnership with formal regulatory constraints, will mediate relations among officers, staff, and inmates, or are the failures of imprisonment as an ethically-constrained institution so deeply etched into its structure that no professional ethic is possible? The contributors to this volume struggle with this central question and its broader and narrower ramifications. Some argue that despite the problems facing the practice of incarceration as punishment, a professional ethic for prison officers and staff can be constructed and implemented. Others, however, despair of imprisonment and even punishment, and reach instead for alternative ways of healing the personal and communal breaches constituted by crime. The result is a provocative contribution to practical and professional ethics.

Technical Challenges of Multipollutant Air Quality Management (Hardcover, 2011): George M. Hidy, Jeffrey R. Brook, Kenneth L.... Technical Challenges of Multipollutant Air Quality Management (Hardcover, 2011)
George M. Hidy, Jeffrey R. Brook, Kenneth L. Demerjian, Luisa T. Molina, William T. Pennell, …
R5,071 Discovery Miles 50 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Recent critiques of air quality management approaches currently employed in developed and many developing countries have suggested that efficiencies could be achieved if air quality management practices shifted from pollutant-by-pollutant approaches to a comprehensive multipollutant approach in which emission reduction decisions are based on relative risk and evaluated on their effectiveness in meeting environmental and health goals. This book assesses our technical readiness to undertake such an approach, and it outlines the technical developments that will be needed to achieve a risk-based approach air quality management that includes means for measuring the effectiveness of management decisions.
