The Baltic Sea area is an old cultural landscape with a well
developed international framework for monitoring, assessing and
managing its marine ecosystems. It provides a good case study for
other regions where such management is being set up. The chapters
in this book are based on lectures given at a summer school on the
Baltic Sea island of Bornholm in the summer of 2009. They cover a
range of topics, spanning from detailed descriptions of political
agreements that protect the marine environment, to basic modelling
instructions, to an assessment of the possible impacts of climate
change on the marine ecosystem, to a reflection on the role of
climate scientists and their responsibility in society. This
interdisciplinary book is primarily directed at students and
lecturers of the environmental disciplines to provide an overview
of the possible impacts of climate change on the Baltic Sea. It is
also intended to serve as a background reference for scientists and
policy makers, both for the Baltic Sea area and more generally. The
book is a contribution to the BALTEX programme and to the BONUS+
projects ECOSUPPORT and Baltic-C.
Solitons were discovered by John Scott Russel in 1834, and have
interested scientists and mathematicians ever since. They have been
the subject of a large body of research in a wide variety of fields
of physics and mathematics, not to mention engineering and other
branches of science such as biology. This volume comprises the
written versions of the talks presented at a workshop held at
Queen's University in 1997, an interdisciplinary meeting wherein
top researchers from many fields could meet, interact, and exchange
ideas. Topics covered include mathematical and numerical aspects of
solitons, as well as applications of solitons to nuclear and
particle physics, cosmology, and condensed-matter physics. The book
should be of interest to researchers in any field in which solitons
are encountered.
Sexually transmitted infections (STI) continue to be a major cause
of morbidity and mortality, both in developed industrial countries
as well as in the developing world. Human immunodeficiency virus
infections and the ensuing opportunistic infections are a major
drain on the human and financial resources of many countries in the
developing world and even with the availability of effective
treatment the epidemic is not yet contained. Screening in
developing worlds is difficult and there is a need for simple
reliable cheap diagnostic methods that can be performed at the
point of care, on the same day and by staff with limited training.
Molecular biological methods are very attractive for the diagnosis
of STI since a well defined range of pathogens is responsible for
the infection. Diagnosis of Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Methods
and Protocols strives to cover the full range of molecular testing
for STI. Chapters cover a variety of topics such as aspects of DNA
extraction from small volume samples or difficult tissues, simple,
nested or multiplex PCR, use of duplex primers or other
modifications of primers and PCR conditions, sequence analysis for
genotyping, denaturing gel analysis, microarrays using liquid beads
or microspheres and silicon nanoparticle-enhanced microcantilever
detection of DNA. Written in the successful Methods in Molecular
Biology (TM) series format, chapters include introductions to their
respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents,
step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and notes on
troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and
easily accessible, Diagnosis of Sexually Transmitted Diseases:
Methods and Protocols will be a valuable reference for the
scientist looking to establish molecular methodologies for the
diagnosis of STI tests in their own lab.

The phrase Red Power, coined by Clyde Warrior (1939-1968) in the
1960s, introduced militant rhetoric into American Indian activism.
In this first-ever biography of Warrior, historian Paul R.
McKenzie-Jones presents the Ponca leader as the architect of the
Red Power movement, spotlighting him as one of the most significant
and influential figures in the fight for Indian rights. The Red
Power movement arose in reaction to centuries of oppressive federal
oversight of American Indian peoples. It comprised an assortment of
grassroots organizations that fought for treaty rights, tribal
sovereignty, self-determination, cultural preservation, and
cultural relevancy in education. A cofounder of the National Indian
Youth Council, Warrior was among the movement's most prominent
spokespeople. Throughout the 1960s, he blazed a trail of cultural
and political reawakening in Indian Country, using a combination of
ultranationalistic rhetoric and direct-action protest.
McKenzie-Jones uses interviews with some of Warrior's closest
associates to delineate the complexity of community, tradition,
culture, and tribal identity that shaped Warrior's activism. For
too many years, McKenzie-Jones maintains, Warrior's death at age
twenty-nine overshadowed his intellect and achievements. Red Power
has been categorized as an American Indian interpretation of Black
Power that emerged after his death. This groundbreaking book brings
to light, however, previously unchronicled connections between Red
Power and Black Power that show the movements emerging side by side
as militant, urgent calls for social change. Warrior borrowed only
the slogan as a metaphor for cultural and community integrity.
Descended from hereditary chiefs, Warrior was immersed in Ponca
history and language from birth. McKenzie-Jones shows how this
intimate experience, and the perspective gained from participating
in powwows, summer workshops, and college Indian organizations,
shaped Warrior's intertribal approach to Indian affairs. This
long-overdue biography explores how Clyde Warrior's commitment to
culture, community, and tradition formed the basis for his vision
of Red Power.

Altogether Done is an unabashed western novel that tracks a man
from his Texas orphan childhood through the hell of captivity in a
Yankee prison for Johnny Rebs and ultimately his galvanization into
a Union Blue uniform. Caleb Kane is at war with everyone, but
mostly himself. In a peculiar turn of fate, he finds himself
reunited with his estranged brother in Wyoming Territory. There, in
the pursuit of his duty as an army intelligence agent, Kane becomes
deeply mired in family, mystery and suspence on ground uneasily
shared by an Indian Nation and a Cavalry Troop. A particularly
nasty bad guy, a crooked cavalry captain and a drunkard Indian
Agent make for a potent stew of wrongdoers that clutter Kane's
trail with danger, murderous action and ultimately to the question
of his own redemption.
