Frederick R. Bauer captures the essence of William James in
"Science, God's Hard Gift." We have all heard the word "pragmatic."
It entered our everyday vocabulary as a result of a series of
lectures delivered by William James, the greatest of all great
American thinkers. He gave those lectures in 1906, four years
before his death at age sixty-eight, in 1910. In the first of those
lectures, James described the type of person he wanted to reach, a
person not unlike a large number of persons today: "He wants facts;
he wants science," James said, "but he also wants a religion."
James did not live to see the incredible new scientific
discoveries of the 1900s. Those discoveries have led increasing
numbers of experts to claim that modern science has made religion
"obsolete." "Science, God's Hard Gift" celebrates this centenary of
James's death by updating and expanding his ideas on pragmatism for
those contemporaries who want facts and science, but also a
religion.
The media bombard us with claims that are often strange, unclear,
and even upsetting. Quantum physicists claim that "vacuum
nothingness" is not really nothing, because it teems with energy
and virtual particles. Psychological research suggests that most of
our neighbors suffer from some degree of mental disorder. Social
scientists assure us that science itself is simply a cultural myth.
Can anyone sort out fact from fiction in today's world? The answer,
thankfully, is "Yes " But first, you must make a radical shift in
your approach, because serious thinking about reality involves
serious thinking about fiction, not only in your everyday mind, but
also in the scholarly and technical realms. For anyone who has ever
wondered-and you should wonder-whether there really are such things
as government, society, the economy, or even marriage, the deeply
philosophical and utterly practical "Logical Fictions" shows you
how a solid grounding in logic and language can help you avoid
getting trapped by the ideological fictions prevalent in today's
sophisticated world. Consider yourself warned: humorous and filled
with entertaining examples, this book will stretch your brain and
provoke your thoughts. Your view of the world may never be the
same.
This book summarizes 20 years of work on the kinetics of
blood-brain transfer and metabolism mechanisms in mammalian brain.
The substances affiliated with these mechanisms include glucose,
amino acids, monocarboxylic acids, and oxygen. These substances are
important to energy metabolism and neurotransmission in the
mammalian brain at rest and during activation.
To understand the processes addressed by these mechanisms, the
book examines the kinetics of compartmentation and compartmental
analysis, particularly as they relate to transporter, enzyme, and
receptor function. Compartments are subsets of substances separated
by transporters and receptors in membranes, and enzymes in
cells.
This book is divided in six major chapters covering
compartmental analysis, kinetic analysis of transport and
metabolism, blood-brain transfer and metabolism of glucose, amino
acids, and oxygen, and amino acid metabolism and interaction of
amino acid metabolites with receptors.
Drawing on an unusually rich empirical base, this timely and
compelling book examines how environmental values are constructed
and legitimized within the policy process. It trains the spotlight
on four environmentally significant countries - China, Japan,
India, and the United States - representing a wide diversity of
cultural, social, economic, illegible] political characteristics.
Through a combination of case studies and comparative analysis, the
contributors illuminate cultural assumptions, standards, and
analytic techniques that shape environmental actions and policies
around the world. Forging Environmentalism provides valuable
direction regarding what can be done to secure public support for
and illegible] in environmental policies. Incorporating expert
legal, economic, philosophical, sociological, and political
perspective points the way toward the possibilities for a
convergence of environmental norms and values across diverse
cultures.

Based on an extensive interview study with lesbian, transgender and
queer BDSM practitioners, this book sheds new light on sexuality
and current theoretical debates in gender and queer studies. It
critically discusses practices of establishing consent, pushing
boundaries, playing with gender and creating new kinds of
intimacies and embodiments.
The "Asian values" argument within the international human rights debate holds that not all Asian states should be expected to protect human rights to the same degree. This position of "cultural relativism," often used by authoritarian governments in Asia to counter charges of human rights violations, has long been dismissed by Western and Asian human rights advocates as a weak excuse. This book moves beyond the politicized rhetoric that has dogged the international debate on human rights to identify the more persuasive contributions by East Asian intellectuals. The editors of this book argue that critical intellectuals in East Asia have begun to chart a middle ground between the extreme, uncompromising ends of this argument, making particular headway in the areas of group rights and economic, social, and cultural (ethnic minority) rights. The chapters form a collective intellectual inquiry into the following four areas: critical perspectives on the "Asian values" debate; theoretical proposals for an improved international human rights regime with greater input from East Asians; the resources within East Asian cultural traditions that can help promote human rights in the region; and key human rights issues facing East Asia as a result of rapid economic growth in the region.
Following up Robert Traina's classic "Methodical Bible Study," this
book introduces the practice of inductive Bible study to a new
generation of students, pastors, and church leaders. The authors,
two seasoned educators with over sixty combined years of experience
in the classroom, offer guidance on adopting an inductive posture
and provide step-by-step instructions on how to do inductive Bible
study. They engage in conversation with current hermeneutical
issues, setting forth well-grounded principles and processes for
biblical interpretation and appropriation. The process they present
incorporates various methods of biblical study to help readers hear
the message of the Bible on its own terms.
From beginning to end, the very structure of the Gospel of Matthew
emphasizes that Jesus is the Son of God. At climactic points Jesus
is so identified-by Peter, by a Roman centurion, by Jesus himself,
and by God the Father. With The Gospel of the Son of God, David
Bauer provides a comprehensive introduction to this Gospel that has
been so foundational to the Christian church. Arguing that the
nature of Matthew itself should provide us with the framework for
its study, he presents a holistic inductive approach with a
literary, theological, and canonical focus. In the first section on
orientation, Bauer explores issues of genre, interpretive methods,
authorship, audience, and literary structure. Then he moves to
interpretation, guiding readers through the meaning of sections of
the text. Finally, the reflection section synthesizes and develops
major theological themes emerging from the interpretation,
including Christology, salvation history, eschatology, and
discipleship. While providing a sound basis for the study of
Matthew, Bauer goes beyond typical introductory issues to draw out
the rich theological vision of the Gospel. His careful scholarship
and clear exposition will make this a valuable resource for college
and seminary students and pastors.

Entsprechend dem Leitmotiv der Ergiinzungsbiinde III-4, Struktur

A senior New Testament scholar and teacher helps students
understand the historical, literary, and theological issues of the
book of Acts and introduces key concepts in the field of narrative
criticism. This volume captures the message of the book of Acts by
taking seriously the book's essential character as a powerful story
through which Luke communicates profound theological truth. While
giving attention to historical background, its purpose is to lead
readers through a close reading that yields fresh insights into
passages throughout Acts.
The Determination of Sound Exposures (DOSES) software was developed
by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH) specifically for use by mine management and safety
personnel. DOSES simplifies the record-keeping and analysis
associated with time-motion studies and worker noise exposures,
making it easier to identify and solve noise problems.
