The Grand Canyon is an American icon, a scenic wonder like no
other. From the several Native American tribes who have called
Grand Canyon home to swashbuckling pioneers to an airliner
collision over the canyon that led to the formation of the FAA, It
Happened at Grand Canyon tells the history of this colossal,
magnificent place.
This book explores the ways in which Ayurveda, the oldest medical
tradition of the Indian subcontinent, was transformed from a
composite of 'ancient' medical knowledge into a 'modern' medical
system, suited to the demands posed by apparatuses of health
developed in colonial India. It examines the shift between an
entrenched colonial reticence to consider the Indigenous Medical
Systems as legitimate scientific medicine, to a growing acceptance
of Ayurvedic medicine following the First World War. Locating the
moment of transition within the implementation of a dyarchic system
of governance in 1919, the book argues that the revamping of the
'Medical Services' into an important new category of regional
governance ushered in an era of health planning that considered
curative and preventative medicine as key components of the
'health' of the population. As such, it illuminates the way in
which conceptions of power, authority and agency were newly
configured and consolidated as politics were revamped in the late
colonial India.
More than ever, today's rapidly changing global markets increase
the risks and rewards for innovations. But amidst rising
uncertainties and greater competition, can CEOs improve the chances
for successful innovation?
Innovating at the Top presents revealing interviews with CEOs at
nine highly innovative international corporations - Bosch,
Genentech, Infosys, Nokia, Research in Motion, SAP, 3M, Toyota, and
Unilever - to gain their views how to encourage and support
innovation.
When CEOs across three continents express many similar opinions
about stimulating innovation, it is clear there are fundamental
principles and methods all CEOs should explore to spin up the
flywheel of innovation.
Innovating at the Top distils 10 Key Innovation Drivers from
insightful CEO recommendations and advice. These innovation
management practices can help every CEO consider proven ways to
raise the probability a company can reach and sustain stronger
innovative performance.
Interpersonal communication has been studied in terms of both
communication functions and specialized contexts. This handbook
comprehensively covers the field including research on processes of
social influence, the role of communication in the development,
maintenance and decline of close personal relationships, nonverbal
communication, cognitive approaches, communication and conflict,
bargaining and negotiation, health communication, organizational
socialization and supervisor-subordinate communication, social
networks, and technologically-mediated interpersonal communication.
Two chapters are dedicated to research methods in the field. The
handbook includes chapters by widely recognized and respected
scholars in the field.
In an earlier era, the communication field was dominated by the
study of mediated and unmediated message effects during which
considerable research focused on the attitudinal and action
consequences of exposure to messages. A more catholic purview of
the communication process exists today. This more encompassing
perspective does not deny the importance of studying message
effects, but raises the additional question of how individuals
generate messages in the first place. While the earlier era of
communication research was dominated by studies that focused on
attitude and behavior change as primary dependent variables, such
variables as message comprehension have begun to emerge in this new
era. The focus on communication and cognition has led,
paradoxically, to a more intense focus on social interaction
processes. The theory and research presented in this volume seeks
to strike a balance between the internal workings of the individual
cognitive system on the one hand and the outer world of social
interaction on the other. Whether or not the theory and research
stands the test of time, it is clear that complete cognitive
accounts of social interaction cannot confine themselves to mere
descriptions of the cognitive structures and processes that are
responsible for message production and comprehension. Explicit
links must be made between these cognitive structures and processes
and the workings of social interaction. This work takes a modest
step in that direction.
Korean Communication, Media, and Culture is a bibliography of
English-language publications for non-Korean-speaking academics,
researchers, and professionals. In addition to the actual
annotations of all the major books, book chapters, journal
articles, and theses/dissertations, each chapter includes
contextual introductory commentary on its topic. The authors not
only historicize their findings but they also prescribe the
direction that English-language research on Korean communication
should take.

This book is a collection of eye-opening interviews with CEOs from
major international corporations - Nokia, Unilever, Toyota and
Bosch are just some of the many included. The CEOs discuss their
innovative approaches to new challenges and opportunities in their
business. A fascinating insight into the minds of global leaders.
Geology and Health is an integration of papers from geo-bio-chemical scientists on health issues of concern to humankind worldwide, demonstrating how the health and well-being of populations now and in the future can benefit through coordinated scientific efforts. International examples on dusts, coal, arsenic, fluorine, lead, mercury, and water borne chemicals, that lead to health effects are documented and explored. They were selected to illustrate how hazards and potential hazards may be from natural materials and processes and how anthropomorphic changes may have contributed to disease and debilitation instead of solutions. Introductory essays by the editors highlight some of the progress toward scientific integration that could be applied to other geographic sites and research efforts. A global purview and integration of earth and health sciences expertise could benefit the future of populations from many countries. Effective solutions to combat present and future hazards will arise when the full scope of human interactions with the total environment is appreciated by the wide range of people in positions to make important and probably expensive decisions. A case to illustrate the point of necessary crossover between Geology and Health was the drilling of shallow tube wells in Bangladesh to provide non-contaminated ground water. This "good" solution unfortunately mobilized arsenic from rocks into the aquifer and created an unforeseen or 'silent' hazard: arsenic. Geologists produce maps of earth materials and are concerned with natural processes in the environment with long time-frame horizons. The health effects encountered through changing the water source might have been avoided if the hydrological characteristics of the Bangladesh delta had been known and any chemical hazards had been investigated and documented. A recurrence of this type of oversight should be avoidable when responsible parties, often government officials, appreciate the necessity of such integrated efforts. The book extols the virtues of cooperation between the earth, life and health sciences, as the most practical approach to better public health worldwide.

The ELA skills prioritized by the Common Core State Standards
(CCSS) demand different cognitive capacities in students and
different instructional approaches by teachers. In a study
published in "Educational Researcher," Andrew Porter from the
University of Pennsylvania compared the CCSS to state standards
from a range of states; his team concluded that the CCSS were
dramatically different from current state standards, the most
powerful change being an increase in "higher order cognitive
demand" for students. The big challenge for schools implementing
the CCSS is not tweaking state standards at grade levels, but a
whole different set of teaching practices that build higher order
thinking and work in students. Drawing on its 20-year history of
building independence, responsibility and student-ownership of
learning, Expeditionary Learning has an important role to play in
helping teachers make the instructional shifts necessary to build
these skills in students. From its Outward Bound roots to its
recent focus on student-engaged assessment, the EL model has been
centered on imbuing students with responsibility for their growth,
active and engaging pedagogy, and relevant curriculum that
motivates students to do more than they think possible. This book
focuses on the instructional shifts required to help students meet
the rigorous new literacy standards of the Common Core. The authors
explore common misconceptions about the Common Core and provide
practical guidance to teachers and school leaders seeking to
implement the CCSS through relevant and engaging classroom
practices. Filled with case studies, resources, and high quality
videos of master teachers at work, the book will offer educators a
vision of the Common Core at its best.
