As the first book to examine the origins and spread of agriculture and pastoralism in Europe and Asia as a whole, this major contribution should be essential reading for archaeologists, anthropologists, biologists and geographers. Adopting a novel approach to the subject, the authors examine it first in terms of seven different disciplinary perspectives: social, ecological, genetic, linguistic, biomolecular, epidemiological and geogrpahical. Then, 20 case studies are presented, which are based primarily on archaeological and biological evidence and which relate to three major regions: Southwest Asia, Europe and Central Asia to the Pacific. The book concludes with an overview of Eurasia as a whole.; The transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture had revolutionary consequences for human society. It led to the emergence of urban civilizations and ultimately to humanity's almost complete dependence on relatively few domesticated animals and plants. The subject has been much studied, but the results have tended to be interpreted largely in terms of local cultural sequences, with insufficient comparison made with evidence from other areas. In contrast, this book provides a continental- scale framework, with its scope extended to pastoralism because in Eurasia both the raising of livestock and the cultivation of crops were integral components of the agricultural "revolution" from its inception some 10,000 years ago.; Comprehensive and authoritative, "The Origins and Spread of Agriculture and Pastoralism in Eurasia" should appeal strongly to the wide readership of students and specialists concerned with the prehistoric antecedents of modern civilization.
Supervisors, project managers and CEOs should find this book useful as it deals with an emerging global reality - culturally diverse people of both genders in the workplace. The new workplace environment demands that employees be selected, evaluated and promoted on the basis of performance competency, regardless of sex, race, religion or place of origin. Focusing on workplace diversity instead of concepts of "majority" and "minority" allows managers to offer all personnel equal opportunities. Affirmative action is now aimed at developing human potential Diversity is becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Written from the North American viewpoint, this book examines the key concepts that drive American plants and offices today which are likely to be realities overseas tomorrow, and the concepts espoused in this book can be applied universally The book fills a gap in management education and development. It is a practical manual designed to teach and encourage managers to lead and strengthen the human resources of an organization.
This book is one of a series of more than 20 volumes resulting from the World Archaeological Congress, September 1986, attempting to bring together not only archaeologists and anthropologists from many parts of the world, as well as academics from contingent disciplines, but also non-academics from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. This volume develops a new approach to plant exploitation and early agriculture in a worldwide comparative context. It modifies the conceptual dichotomy between "hunter-gatherers" and "farmers," viewing human exploitation of plant resources as a global evolutionary process which incorporated the beginnings of cultivation and crop domestication. The studies throughout the book come from a worldwide range of geographical contexts, from the Andes to China and from Australia to the Upper Mid-West of North America. This work is of interest to anthropologists, archaeologists, botanists and geographers. Originally published 1989.
The sociology of fame and celebrity is at the cutting edge of current scholarship in a number of different areas of study. Stargazing highlights the interactional dynamics of celebrity and fame in contemporary society, including the thoughts and feelings of stars on the red carpet, the thrills and risks of encountering a famous person at a convention or on the streets, and the excitement generated even by the obvious fakery of celebrity impersonators. Using compelling, real-life examples involving popular celebrities, Ferris and Harris examine how the experience and meanings of celebrity are shaped by social norms, interactional negotiations, and interpretive storytelling.
Britain and France were the leading industrial nations in 18th-century Europe. This book examines the rivalry which existed between the two nations and the methods used by France to obtain the skilled manpower and technology which had given Britain the edge - particularly in the new coal-based technologies. Despite the British Act of 1719 which outlawed industrial espionage and technology transfer, France continued to bring key industrial workers from Britain and to acquire British machinery and production methods. Drawing on a mass of unpublished archival material, this book investigates the nature and application of British laws and the involvement of some major British industrialists in these issues, and discusses the extent to which French espionage had any real success. In the process it presents an in-depth understanding of 18th-century economies, and the cultures and bureaucracies which were so important in shaping economic life. Above all, the late John Harris saw the history of industrial espionage as "one means of restoring the thoughts and activities of human beings to the centre stage of industrial history". These are the stories of individuals - Holkers, Trudaines, Wilkinsons, or Milnes - and their impact on the world.

Guide to Fitness After Fifty presents basic and applied research data, authoritative advice and tested techniques for professional workers who want to learn more about physical exercise, fitness and health for aging people and for all who seek to become more physically and mentally fit. The editors and contributors believe that physical activity and exercise following the pri ciples and practices utlined in this inter disciplinary volume can improve the health and quality of life by increasing en durance and cardiovascular fitness, strengthening the musculoskeletal system, im proving mobility, posture and appearance, and relaxing emotional tensions. Evidence at hand and discussed in this book demonstrates that properly prescribed physical activity or exercise can raise the level of physical fitness and health, both physical and mental, at any age, delay the ravages of aging, and prevent or reduce disability from musculoskeletal and circulatory disorders. Section I, Perspectives on Exercise and Aging, surveys the fundamental problems and relationships of exercise to aging and health and provides historical insights and philosophic perspectives on the significance and importance of physical fitness and exercise through the centuries and in contemporary society. Section II, Evaluation and Physiology of Exercise, presents objective scientific and medical evidence that reasonable improvement in fitness and other bodily func tions may be achieved by people of all ages who follow well designed exercise and relaxation routines for at least 30 minutes three or more times weekly."

This book offers mental health professionals insights and recommendations for supporting children of color in the child welfare system. Race plays a pivotal role in the experiences of children in the child welfare system. Children of color are more likely to enter the system, stay in the system longer, and receive fewer services while they are in it. As a result, they are more likely to face a decline in their immediate and long-term academic and educational progress, more likely to enter the juvenile justice system, and less likely to be satisfied with counseling and other support services they receive while in out-of-home placements. This book offers the crucial insights and key recommendations that mental health professionals need to support children of color in the child welfare system. By understanding the challenges that children of color face in the system, as well as best practices for supporting them, professionals in the child welfare system can improve outcomes. The book will be an essential resource for researchers, counselors and clinicians who work in the child welfare system, as well as those designing interventions to help children and their families.
The story of Samarkand is woven around the history of the manuscript of the Rubaiyaat of Omar Khayyam, from its creation by the poet and sage in eleventh-century Persia to its loss when the Titanic sank in 1912. Unwittingly involved in a brawl on the streets of Samarkand, Omar Khayyam is brought before a local judge who recognizes his genius as a poet and gives him a blank book in which to inscribe his verses. Thus the head of a great poet is saved and the Rubaiyaat of Omar Khayyam is born. The threads of his life become interwoven with the designs of the vizier, Nizam al Mulk, and of Hassan Sabbah, the founder of the Order of the Assassins who later hides the precious manuscript in his famous mountain fortress. At the end of the nineteenth century the poems fire the imagination of the West in Edward Fitzgerald's evocative translation. An American scholar learns of the manuscript's survival and recovers it with the help of a Persian princess. Together they take it on the fateful voyage of the Titanic.
The children and grandchildren of South Asian migrants to the UK are living out British identities which go largely unrecognized as dominant voices both inside and outside their communities, seeking to foreground and hold in place alternative positionings of them as primarily Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims or Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis or Panjabi, Gujarati, Hindi, and Urdu speakers. This ignores their everyday low-key Britishness, albeit a Britishness with new inflections. It is this sensibility which marks them as "Brasians."

Topics range from the use of screening mammography and approaches to breast cancer detection using MRI to improved visualization of the prostate gland from transrectal ultrasound and MRI, to MRI-guided resection of neoplasms.
In this study Friedrich Waismann gives a systematic presentation of insights into philosophical problems which can be achieved by clarifying the language in which the problems are posed. Much of the material and the method itself derive from Wittgenstein's work in the early 1930s. The book was originally envisaged as a well organized account of Wittgenstein's distinctive form of linguistic philosophy to enable the Vienna Circle to incorporate these valuable methods into their own programme of analysis. The project evolved over many years into a wide-ranging survey of the dissolution of many philosophical problems and the construction of a systematic philosophical grammar. Waismann shows how puzzlement can be removed by careful description of the uses of the terms employed in framing problems. At the same time, he sketches a general framework for analysis of language, including chapters on names, general terms, logical operators, propositions and questions. This book is a presentation of Wittgenstein's philosophy of language in a format easier to follow than his own intricate texts. Waismann exhibits the merits of this method of philosophizing. This book should serve as a useful tex
The last decade has seen an enormous change in the capability of information technology and also in the expectations of what that technology can provide. The personal computer revolution at the start of the 1980s brought computing power to the desktop in a way that, for the first time, non-technical users could understand and use in their everyday work. The invisible wall of mystique that had separated computers from their potential users for so long had been demolished, and the world of business would never be the same again. As we entered the 1990s, a decade later, we witnessed the beginnings of another revolution. This revolution is not so obvious, but its implications are even more far-reaching. It is not so obvious because it is happening behind the scenes, in the communications and computing infrastructure that support the machines that can be seen sitting on office desks and, increasingly, being carried with business people as standard equipment along with a briefcase and umbrella. It is potentially more far-reaching for the following reason. The per sonal computer of the 1980s brought computing power to the user in a box that could fit on a desk. The revolution of the 1990s brings to the user computing power that is distributed across the whole planet."
Assessment is arguably the most important stage of nursing. It forms the basis for any planned nursing intervention and a baseline against which subsequent events in the hospital stay can be compared. Assessment is an ongoing activity where the patient is continually reviewed and care reappraised to ensure that the patient's needs are being met. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Byron Physical Assessment Framework (BPAF). the study involved scrutinising the BPAF to describe its purpose, conceptual basis and how it was developed. The BAF was then refined using extensive literature review and expert opinion to improve its comprehensiveness and clarity for its intended purpose. This monograph should be useful to all those attempting to construct and validate clinical assessment and measuring tools. Ruth Harris has the expertise necessary to do this in a sophisticated yet realistic way for practice colleagues.
Applied Time Series Modelling and Forecasting provides a relatively non-technical introduction to applied time series econometrics and forecasting involving non-stationary data. The emphasis is very much on the why and how and, as much as possible, the authors confine technical material to boxes or point to the relevant sources for more detailed information. This book is based on an earlier title Using Cointegration Analysis in Econometric Modelling by Richard Harris. As well as updating material covered in the earlier book, there are two major additions involving panel tests for unit roots and cointegration and forecasting of financial time series. Harris and Sollis have also incorporated as many of the latest techniques in the area as possible including: testing for periodic integration and cointegration; GLS detrending when testing for unit roots; structural breaks and season unit root testing; testing for cointegration with a structural break; asymmetric tests for cointegration; testing for super-exogeniety; seasonal cointegration in multivariate models; and approaches to structural macroeconomic modelling. In addition, the discussion of certain topics, such as testing for unique vectors, has been simplified. Applied Time Series Modelling and Forecasting has been written for students taking courses in financial economics and forecasting, applied time series, and econometrics at advanced undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It will also be useful for practitioners who wish to understand the application of time series modelling e.g. financial brokers. Data sets and econometric code for implementing some of the more recent procedures covered in the book can be found on the following web site www.wiley.co.uk/harris |
