The Origins And Spread Of Agriculture And Pastoralism In Eurasia - Crops, Fields, Flocks And Herds (Paperback): David R. Harris... The Origins And Spread Of Agriculture And Pastoralism In Eurasia - Crops, Fields, Flocks And Herds (Paperback)
David R. Harris Director, Institute of Archaeology, University College London.
R2,536 Discovery Miles 25 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As the first book to examine the origins and spread of agriculture and pastoralism in Europe and Asia as a whole, this major contribution should be essential reading for archaeologists, anthropologists, biologists and geographers. Adopting a novel approach to the subject, the authors examine it first in terms of seven different disciplinary perspectives: social, ecological, genetic, linguistic, biomolecular, epidemiological and geogrpahical. Then, 20 case studies are presented, which are based primarily on archaeological and biological evidence and which relate to three major regions: Southwest Asia, Europe and Central Asia to the Pacific. The book concludes with an overview of Eurasia as a whole.; The transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture had revolutionary consequences for human society. It led to the emergence of urban civilizations and ultimately to humanity's almost complete dependence on relatively few domesticated animals and plants. The subject has been much studied, but the results have tended to be interpreted largely in terms of local cultural sequences, with insufficient comparison made with evidence from other areas. In contrast, this book provides a continental- scale framework, with its scope extended to pastoralism because in Eurasia both the raising of livestock and the cultivation of crops were integral components of the agricultural "revolution" from its inception some 10,000 years ago.; Comprehensive and authoritative, "The Origins and Spread of Agriculture and Pastoralism in Eurasia" should appeal strongly to the wide readership of students and specialists concerned with the prehistoric antecedents of modern civilization.

Transcultural Leadership - Empowering the Diverse Workforce (Hardcover): Carmen Vazquez, George F. Simons, Philip R. Harris Transcultural Leadership - Empowering the Diverse Workforce (Hardcover)
Carmen Vazquez, George F. Simons, Philip R. Harris
R2,208 Discovery Miles 22 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Supervisors, project managers and CEOs should find this book useful as it deals with an emerging global reality - culturally diverse people of both genders in the workplace. The new workplace environment demands that employees be selected, evaluated and promoted on the basis of performance competency, regardless of sex, race, religion or place of origin. Focusing on workplace diversity instead of concepts of "majority" and "minority" allows managers to offer all personnel equal opportunities. Affirmative action is now aimed at developing human potential Diversity is becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Written from the North American viewpoint, this book examines the key concepts that drive American plants and offices today which are likely to be realities overseas tomorrow, and the concepts espoused in this book can be applied universally The book fills a gap in management education and development. It is a practical manual designed to teach and encourage managers to lead and strengthen the human resources of an organization.

Vision and Action (Hardcover): Laurence R. Harris, Michael Jenkin Vision and Action (Hardcover)
Laurence R. Harris, Michael Jenkin
R3,565 Discovery Miles 35 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The visual processes involved in moving, reaching, grasping, and playing sports are complex interactions. For example, the action of moving the head provides useful cues to help interpret the visual information. Simultaneously, vision can provide important information about the actions and their control. This becomes a reiterative process. This process, and the interactions between vision and action, are the foci of this volume. This book contains contributions from scientists who are leaders in each of the several facets of the subject. The editors consider simple types of action, such as moving the eyes and head and body, as one would do while looking around or walking, as well as complex actions such as driving a car, catching a ball, or playing ping-pong.

Foraging and Farming - The Evolution of Plant Exploitation (Hardcover): David R. Harris, Gordon C. Hillman Foraging and Farming - The Evolution of Plant Exploitation (Hardcover)
David R. Harris, Gordon C. Hillman
R8,559 Discovery Miles 85 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is one of a series of more than 20 volumes resulting from the World Archaeological Congress, September 1986, attempting to bring together not only archaeologists and anthropologists from many parts of the world, as well as academics from contingent disciplines, but also non-academics from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. This volume develops a new approach to plant exploitation and early agriculture in a worldwide comparative context. It modifies the conceptual dichotomy between "hunter-gatherers" and "farmers," viewing human exploitation of plant resources as a global evolutionary process which incorporated the beginnings of cultivation and crop domestication. The studies throughout the book come from a worldwide range of geographical contexts, from the Andes to China and from Australia to the Upper Mid-West of North America. This work is of interest to anthropologists, archaeologists, botanists and geographers. Originally published 1989.

Stargazing - Celebrity, Fame, and Social Interaction (Hardcover): Kerry O. Ferris, Scott R Harris Stargazing - Celebrity, Fame, and Social Interaction (Hardcover)
Kerry O. Ferris, Scott R Harris
R4,585 Discovery Miles 45 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The sociology of fame and celebrity is at the cutting edge of current scholarship in a number of different areas of study. Stargazing highlights the interactional dynamics of celebrity and fame in contemporary society, including the thoughts and feelings of stars on the red carpet, the thrills and risks of encountering a famous person at a convention or on the streets, and the excitement generated even by the obvious fakery of celebrity impersonators. Using compelling, real-life examples involving popular celebrities, Ferris and Harris examine how the experience and meanings of celebrity are shaped by social norms, interactional negotiations, and interpretive storytelling.

Industrial Espionage and Technology Transfer - Britain and France in the Eighteenth Century (Hardcover): John R Harris Industrial Espionage and Technology Transfer - Britain and France in the Eighteenth Century (Hardcover)
John R Harris
R5,555 Discovery Miles 55 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Britain and France were the leading industrial nations in 18th-century Europe. This book examines the rivalry which existed between the two nations and the methods used by France to obtain the skilled manpower and technology which had given Britain the edge - particularly in the new coal-based technologies. Despite the British Act of 1719 which outlawed industrial espionage and technology transfer, France continued to bring key industrial workers from Britain and to acquire British machinery and production methods. Drawing on a mass of unpublished archival material, this book investigates the nature and application of British laws and the involvement of some major British industrialists in these issues, and discusses the extent to which French espionage had any real success. In the process it presents an in-depth understanding of 18th-century economies, and the cultures and bureaucracies which were so important in shaping economic life. Above all, the late John Harris saw the history of industrial espionage as "one means of restoring the thoughts and activities of human beings to the centre stage of industrial history". These are the stories of individuals - Holkers, Trudaines, Wilkinsons, or Milnes - and their impact on the world.

Children of Color in the Child Welfare System - Psychological Research and Best Practices (Paperback): Yvette R. Harris, Gloria... Children of Color in the Child Welfare System - Psychological Research and Best Practices (Paperback)
Yvette R. Harris, Gloria Oliver Carpenter
R1,506 Discovery Miles 15 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers mental health professionals insights and recommendations for supporting children of color in the child welfare system. Race plays a pivotal role in the experiences of children in the child welfare system. Children of color are more likely to enter the system, stay in the system longer, and receive fewer services while they are in it. As a result, they are more likely to face a decline in their immediate and long-term academic and educational progress, more likely to enter the juvenile justice system, and less likely to be satisfied with counseling and other support services they receive while in out-of-home placements. This book offers the crucial insights and key recommendations that mental health professionals need to support children of color in the child welfare system. By understanding the challenges that children of color face in the system, as well as best practices for supporting them, professionals in the child welfare system can improve outcomes. The book will be an essential resource for researchers, counselors and clinicians who work in the child welfare system, as well as those designing interventions to help children and their families.

Origins of Agriculture in Western Central Asia - An Environmental-Archaeological Study (Hardcover): David R. Harris Origins of Agriculture in Western Central Asia - An Environmental-Archaeological Study (Hardcover)
David R. Harris
R1,918 Discovery Miles 19 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In "Origins of Agriculture in Western Central Asia," archaeologist David R. Harris addresses questions of when, how, and why agriculture and settled village life began east of the Caspian Sea. The book describes and assesses evidence from archaeological investigations in Turkmenistan and adjacent parts of Iran, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan in relation to present and past environmental conditions and genetic and archaeological data on the ancestry of the crops and domestic animals of the Neolithic period. It includes accounts of previous research on the prehistoric archaeology of the region and reports the results of a recent environmental-archaeological project undertaken by British, Russian, and Turkmen archaeologists in Turkmenistan, principally at the early Neolithic site of Jeitun (Djeitun) on the southern edge of the Karakum desert. This project has demonstrated unequivocally that agropastoralists who cultivated barley and wheat, raised goats and sheep, hunted wild animals, made stone tools and pottery, and lived in small mudbrick settlements were present in southern Turkmenistan by 7,000 years ago (c. 6,000 BCE calibrated), where they came into contact with hunter-gatherers of the "Keltiminar Culture." It is possible that barley and goats were domesticated locally, but the available archaeological and genetic evidence leads to the conclusion that all or most of the elements of the Neolithic "Jeitun Culture" spread to the region from farther west by a process of demic or cultural diffusion that broadly parallels the spread of Neolithic agropastoralism from southwest Asia into Europe.By synthesizing for the first time what is currently known about the origins of agriculture in a large part of Central Asia, between the more fully investigated regions of southwest Asia and China, this book makes a unique contribution to the worldwide literature on transitions from hunting and gathering to agriculture.

New Ethnicities and Language Use (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): R. Harris New Ethnicities and Language Use (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
R. Harris; Edited by Sue Wright, Helen Kelly-Holmes
R1,546 Discovery Miles 15 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The children and grandchildren of South Asian migrants to the UK are living out British identities which go largely unrecognized as dominant voices both inside and outside their communities, seeking to foreground and hold in place alternative positionings of them as primarily Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims or Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis or Panjabi, Gujarati, Hindi, and Urdu speakers. This ignores their everyday low-key Britishness, albeit a Britishness with new inflections. It is this sensibility which marks them as "Brasians."

The Principles of Linguistic Philosophy (Paperback, 2nd ed. 1997): R. Harri The Principles of Linguistic Philosophy (Paperback, 2nd ed. 1997)
R. Harri; F. Waismann
R3,491 Discovery Miles 34 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this study Friedrich Waismann gives a systematic presentation of insights into philosophical problems which can be achieved by clarifying the language in which the problems are posed. Much of the material and the method itself derive from Wittgenstein's work in the early 1930s. The book was originally envisaged as a well organized account of Wittgenstein's distinctive form of linguistic philosophy to enable the Vienna Circle to incorporate these valuable methods into their own programme of analysis. The project evolved over many years into a wide-ranging survey of the dissolution of many philosophical problems and the construction of a systematic philosophical grammar. Waismann shows how puzzlement can be removed by careful description of the uses of the terms employed in framing problems. At the same time, he sketches a general framework for analysis of language, including chapters on names, general terms, logical operators, propositions and questions. This book is a presentation of Wittgenstein's philosophy of language in a format easier to follow than his own intricate texts. Waismann exhibits the merits of this method of philosophizing. This book should serve as a useful tex
