Two accounts of the Australian Army at war
During the Great War all of Britain's colonies and dominions
rallied to the appeal of the motherland to fight the common enemy.
None responded more positively than Australia. Leonaur has gathered
together two accounts into this single volume for students and
enthusiasts of the period to enjoy. The Australian experience of
war is finely captured in them both. The first, written by a scout,
takes the reader through recruitment, training, embarkation and a
period in Egypt before gruelling combat on the Gallipoli peninsula
and the bloody trenches of the Western Front. The second account is
filled with vignettes of the Australian experience of war in
Europe. This is another 'two for the price of one' volume by
Leonaur available in softcover or hardback with dust jacket for
collectors.
Mast Cells: Methods and Protocols, Second Edition expands upon the
previous edition with current, detailed reviews that cover topics
of interest to mast cell neophytes and cognoscenti alike. With new
chapters on methods for the enumeration of tissue mast cells and
isolation of mature mast cells and mast cell progenitors from
mammalian tissues, Danio rerio (zebrafish) model in the study of
mast cell development and function, the functions of mast cells in
human health and disease and methods for the isolation, methods for
the investigation of the molecular mechanisms of mast cell
activation and their effector functions, assays for the detection
and analysis of mast cell secretory and cell surface phenotype and,
mast cell activation state, and experimental mouse models of
disease that have been deemed useful for the assessment of mast
cell functions in the regulation of innate and adaptive immune
response in cancer, tissue fibrosis, auto-inflammation and allergic
disease. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular
Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their
respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents,
step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips
on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and
cutting-edge, Mast Cells: Methods and Protocols, Second Edition
provides a sampler of useful methods and techniques in the further
study of mast cell biology.
Transcription factors are the molecules that the cell uses to
interpret the genome: they possess sequence-specific DNA-binding
activity, and either directly or indirectly influence the
transcription of genes. In aggregate, transcription factors control
gene expression and genome organization, and play a pivotal role in
many aspects of physiology and evolution.
This book provides a reference for major aspects of
transcription factor function, encompassing a general catalogue of
known transcription factor classes, origins and evolution of
specific transcription factor types, methods for studying
transcription factor binding sites in vitro, in vivo, and in
silico, and mechanisms of interaction with chromatin and RNA
polymerase."
Membrane science and technology is an expanding field and has
become a prominent part of many activities within the process
industries. It is relatively easy to identify the success stories
of membranes such as desali nation and microfiltration and to refer
to others as developing areas. This, however, does not do justice
to the wide field of separations in which membranes are used. No
other 'single' process offers the same potential and versatility as
that of membranes. The word separation classically conjures up a
model of removing one component or species from a second component,
for example a mass transfer process such as distillation. In the
field of synthetic membranes, the terminology 'separation' is used
in a wider context. A range of separations of the chemical/mass
transfer type have developed around the use of membranes including
distillation, extraction, absorption, adsorption and stripping, as
well as separations of the physical type such as filtration.
Synthetic membranes are an integral part of devices for analysis,
energy generation and reactors (cells) in the electrochemical
industry."

"JFK and Sam" is a tale of two murders. The first occurred in
Dallas in 1963 and the second in Illinois in 1975. The first was
ordered by Sam Giancana to avenge his betrayal by the Kennedys.
Giancana had assured JFK's win in Illinois with the understanding
that the new administration would go easy on the Chicago mob.
Instead, Bobby Kennedy stepped up prosecutions. The second
assassination was carried out by the CIA and the mob to prevent
Giancana from testifying before the Church Committee hearings
regarding his role in the CIA's plot to kill Fidel Castro. The
irony is that both men were assassinated because of their
relationship to each other and events that transpired from that
relationship. "JFK and Sam" is unique from other books on the
Kennedy assassination. Written by an insider with access to key
figures, it names the assassins and traces the assassination team's
movements in 1963. The first shot came from the Dal-Tex building
(adjacent to the book depository) and struck Kennedy in the back of
the neck. The second came from Giancana's driver who fired a CIA
prototype handgun with a telescope (called a "fireball") from the
grassy knoll, using a frangible bullet, which explains why there
was such a massive wound to Kennedy's head. Lee Harvey Oswald was
the fall guy and did not fire a weapon.
Teachers the world over are discovering the importance and benefits
of incorporating popular culture into the music classroom. The
cultural prevalence and the students' familiarity with recorded
music, videos, games, and other increasingly accessible multimedia
materials help enliven course content and foster interactive
learning and participation. Pop-Culture Pedagogy in the Music
Classroom: Teaching Tools from American Idol to YouTube provides
ideas and techniques for teaching music classes using elements of
popular culture that resonate with students' everyday lives. From
popular songs and genres to covers, mixes, and mashups; from video
games such as Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero to television
shows like American Idol, this exciting collection offers
pedagogical models for incorporating pop culture and its associated
technologies into a wide variety of music courses. Biamonte has
collected well-rounded essays that consider a variety of
applications. After an introduction, the essays are organized in 3
sections. The first addresses general tools and technology that can
be incorporated into almost any music class: sound-mixing
techniques and the benefits of using iPods and YouTube. The middle
section uses popular songs, video games, or other aspects of pop
culture to demonstrate music-theory topics or to develop
ear-training and rhythmic skills. The final section examines the
musical, lyrical, or visual content in popular songs, genres, or
videos as a point of departure for addressing broader issues and
contexts. Each chapter contains notes and a bibliography, and two
comprehensive appendixes list popular song examples for teaching
harmony, melody, and rhythm. Two indexes cross-reference the
material by title and by general subject. While written with
college and secondary-school teachers in mind, the methods and
materials presented here can be adapted to any educational level.

Adult children are often overlooked and forgotten when their
parents divorce later in life, but in these pages they will find
comfort and understanding for the many feelings, frustrations, and
challenges they face. For more than two decades, a silent
revolution has been occurring and creating a seismic shift in the
American family and families in other countries. It has been
unfolding without much comment, and its effects are being felt
across three to four generations: more couples are divorcing later
in life. Called the "gray divorce revolution," the cultural
phenomenon describes couples who divorce after the age of 50.
Overlooked in the issues that affect couples divorcing later in in
life are the adult children of divorcing parents. Their voices open
this book, and they are the voices of men and women, 18 to 50 years
old. Some of them are single; some are married. Some have children
of their own. All of them are in different stages of shock, fear,
and sudden, dramatic change. In Home Will Never Be the Same: A
Guide for Adult Children of Gray Divorce, Carol Hughes and Bruce
Fredenburg share their deep understanding gained during the
innumerable hours they have spent with these women and men in their
clinical practices. The result is a valuable resource for these too
often forgotten adult children, many of whom find that, whenever
they express their feelings and experiences, the most important
people in their lives frequently ignore and dismiss them. As the
divorce rate for older adults soars, so too does the number of
adult children who are experiencing parental divorce. Yet, these
adult children frequently say that they are the only ones who are
aware of what they are going through, no one understands what they
are experiencing, and they feel painfully alone.
Presenting an analysis of the tension between nationalism and
globalization in China since the beginning of the 'reform and
opening' period in the late 1970s to the present day, this book
makes a unique contribution to the on-going debate on the nature of
Chinese nationalism. It shows how nationalism is used to link
together key areas of policy-making, including economic policy,
national unification and foreign policy. Hughes provides historical
context to the debate by examining how nationalism became
incorporated into the ideology of the Chinese Communist Party in
the 1980s and the ways in which this strengthened and combined with
globalization discourse through the domestic crisis of the
Tiananmen Massacre and the external shock of the Cold War's
conclusion. The different perspectives towards this resulting
orthodoxy are discussed, including those of the state and dissent
in mainland China and the alternative views from Taiwan and Hong
Kong. Based on Chinese sources throughout, this book offers a
systematic treatment of Chinese nationalism, providing conceptual
insights that allow the reader to grasp the complex weave of
Chinese nationalist sentiment today and its implications for the
future.
