This book contains an up-to-date review of the structure and
evolution of disk galaxies from both the observational and
theoretical point of view. The book is the proceedings of the
Island Universes conference held at the island of Terschelling, The
Netherlands in July 2005, which attracted about 130 experts and
students in the field. The conference was organized as a tribute to
Dr. Piet C. van der Kruit for receiving the honorary Jacobus C.
Kapteyn Professorship in Astronomy. The eight topical themes
discussed at the meeting are reflected in these proceedings: 1)
Properties of Stellar Disks, 2) Kinematics and Dynamics of Disk
Galaxies, 3) Bars, Spiral Structure, and Secular Evolution in Disk
Galaxies, 4) The Outskirts and Environment of Disk Galaxies, 5)
Interstellar Matter, 6) (Evolution of) Star Formation in Galactic
Disks, 7) Disk Galaxies through Cosmic Time, and 8) Formation
Models of Disk Galaxies.
George MacDonald (1824-1905) was writing at a time of Evangelical
unease. In a society ravaged by Asiatic cholera, numbed by levels
of infant mortality, and fearful of revolution and the toxicity of
industry (to name but a few of the many challenges), the 'gospel'
proclaiming eternal damnation for unbelievers was hardly good news;
rather, Christianity was increasingly viewed as the source of bad
news and a tool of state oppression. MacDonald agreed: in his view,
the church had become a vampire, sucking the blood of her children
instead of offering them Eucharistic life. In contrast, like
Christ, MacDonald offered a child. Although at first sight a
familiar Romantic incarnation, in MacDonald's theology 'the child'
becomes an unlikely icon challenging the vampire's kingdom and
confronting the foundations of much of Western theology. John R. de
Jong's meticulously researched study of MacDonald's work -
especially his 'realist' and fantasy novels - in its Victorian
context is of more than historical interest. In light of the growth
of fundamentalist expressions of Christianity, we are encouraged to
consider embrace MacDonald's radical solution to religious
vampirism: becoming children.
First published in 1998, this volume contains an edited selection
of papers presented at the Fifth International Research Seminar on
'Issues in Social Security', held on 14-17 June 1997 in Sweden by
the Foundation for International Studies on Social Security (FISS)
in memory of Brian Abel-Smith. The chapters cover a wide range of
subjects related to old age pension reform, family policy,
employment, privatization of social security and health care. The
authors form a body of well-established researchers and scholars of
world-wide reputation as well as younger scientists, stemming from
various continents, and representing a range of relevant
disciplines. This volume is the fourth in a series on international
studies of issues in social security. The series is initiated by
the Foundation for International Studies on Social Security (FISS).
One of its aims is to confront different academic approaches with
each other, and with public policy perspectives. Another is to give
analytic reports of cross-nationally different approaches to the
design and reform of welfare state programs.
