Are you planning a career in the sciences, math, or technology? If youAEre a girl, you probably should be. It is estimated that by the year 2010 the need for qualified personnel in science and technology careers will increase dramatically. Yet right now only 16 percent of women are involved in science and engineering careers despite the fact that women make up 45 percent of the total labor force. All this means that opportunities abound for women in the sciences.
This upbeat, very useful resource guide will give young women everything they need to start exploring and planning a career in science, math, or technology. Part I introduces readers to the many exciting career opportunities available in the sciences and provides specific strategies for planning for a future career in these areas. Part II recounts true stories of girls and young women in the sciences, detailing how they got involved and what they have accomplished. Part III offers timelines of extraordinary women throughout history, inspiring quotations, a list of Web sites specifically geared toward women in the sciences, suggestions for science-oriented computer software, and many other recommended resources.
If you have an interest in science, this excellent guide, full of useful information, will start you on the path toward realizing your career dreams.

Donald R. Stephens
R4,243 Discovery Miles 42 430 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Phase-Locked Loops for Wireless Communications: Digitial, Analog and Optical Implementations, Second Edition presents a complete tutorial of phase-locked loops from analog implementations to digital and optical designs. The text establishes a thorough foundation of continuous-time analysis techniques and maintains a consistent notation as discrete-time and non-uniform sampling are presented. New to this edition is a complete treatment of charge pumps and the complementary sequential phase detector. Another important change is the increased use of MATLABA(R), implemented to provide more familiar graphics and reader-derived phase-locked loop simulation. Frequency synthesizers and digital divider analysis/techniques have been added to this second edition. Perhaps most distinctive is the chapter on optical phase-locked loops that begins with sections discussing components such as lasers and photodetectors and finishing with homodyne and heterodyne loops. Starting with a historical overview, presenting analog, digital, and optical PLLs, discussing phase noise analysis, and including circuits/algorithms for data synchronization, this volume contains new techniques being used in this field. Highlights of the Second Edition: Development of phase-locked loops from analog to digital and optical, with consistent notation throughout; Expanded coverage of the loop filters used to design second and third order PLLs; Design examples on delay-locked loops used to synchronize circuits on CPUs and ASICS; New material on digital dividers that dominate a frequency synthesizer's noise floor. Techniques to analytically estimate the phase noise of a divider; Presentation of optical phase-locked loops withprimers on the optical components and fundamentals of optical mixing; Section on automatic frequency control to provide frequency-locking of the lasers instead of phase-locking; Presentation of charge pumps, counters, and delay-locked loops. The Second Edition includes the essential topics needed by wireless, optics, and the traditional phase-locked loop specialists to design circuits and software algorithms. All of the material has been updated throughout the book.

Culture-Led Urban Regeneration (Paperback): Ronan Paddison, R. Steven Miles Culture-Led Urban Regeneration (Paperback)
Ronan Paddison, R. Steven Miles
R1,378 Discovery Miles 13 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The idea that culture can be employed as a driver for urban economic growth has become part of the new orthodoxy by which cities seek to enhance their competitive position. Such developments reflect not only the rise to prominence of the cultural sphere in the contemporary (urban) economy, but how the meaning of culture has been redefined to include new uses in order to meet social, economic and political objectives. This significant book focuses on the ability of cultural investment to meet the rhetoric of social inclusion and the extent to which it offers sustainable solutions to the problems of the city. To this end it focuses on the meanings and practice of culture-led policy within the city and its evaluation is proposed. Paddison and Miles have edited an innovative book which presents a series of diverse case studies to challenge the 'one size fits all' model of culture-led urban regeneration - a key concern being the extent to which culture-led regeneration can genuinely fulfil the expectations that policy-makers and urban commentators have of it. This book was previously published as a special issue of Urban Studies.

The consumer ethic is ubiquitous. Everything we do, see, hear and even feel appears to be connected in some way to our experience as consumers. The increasingly high profile of debates over consumption, consumer culture, consumer behaviour and consumer rights reflects a world undergoing rapid change. The Changing Consumer charts thenature of that change, as well as discussing why consumption has become so important and what role, if any, it plays in underpinning social, economic and political transformation. Featuring contributions from some of the leading theorists of consumption from across a range of disciplines, this collection includes chapters on:
* Men's consumption and men's magazines
* The changing profile of women as consumers
* the representation of consumption on popular TV shows
* Consuming retro chic
* The symbolic and emotional role of alcohol consumption.
Drawing on fascinating case studies throughout, this book will be essential reading for students and academics interested in the study of consumption.

Donald R. Stephens
R1,436 Discovery Miles 14 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is intended for the graduate or advanced undergraduate engineer. The primary motivation for writing the text was to present a complete tutorial of phase-locked loops with a consistent notation. As such, it can serve as a textbook in formal classroom instruction, or as a self-study guide for the practicing engineer. A former colleague, Kevin Kreitzer, had suggested that I write a text, with an emphasis on digital phase-locked loops. As modem designers, we were continually receiving requests from other engineers asking for a definitive reference on digital phase-locked loops. There are several good papers in the literature, but there was not a good textbook for either classroom or self-paced study. From my own experience in designing low phase noise synthesizers, I also knew that third-order analog loop design was omitted from most texts. With those requirements, the material in the text seemed to flow naturally. Chapter 1 is the early history of phase-locked loops. I believe that historical knowledge can provide insight to the development and progress of a field, and phase-locked loops are no exception. As discussed in Chapter 1, consumer electronics (color television) prompted a rapid growth in phase-locked loop theory and applications, much like the wireless communications growth today. xiv Preface Although all-analog phase-locked loops are becoming rare, the continuous time nature of analog loops allows a good introduction to phase-locked loop theory."

Islamic History - A Framework for Inquiry - Revised Edition (Paperback, Revised edition): R. Stephen Humphreys Islamic History - A Framework for Inquiry - Revised Edition (Paperback, Revised edition)
R. Stephen Humphreys
R1,813 Discovery Miles 18 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book will be immensely helpful to those who wish to orient themselves to what has become a very large body of literature on medieval Islamic history. Combining a bibliographic study with an inquiry into method, it opens with a survey of the principal reference tools available to historians of Islam and a systematic review of the sources they will confront. Problems of method are then examined in a series of chapters, each exploring a broad topic in the social and political history of the Middle East and North Africa between A.D. 600 and 1500. The topics selected represent a cross-section of Islamic historical studies, and range from the struggles for power within the early Islamic community to the life of the peasantry. Each chapter pursues four questions. What concrete research problems are likely to be most challenging and productive? What resources do we possess for dealing with these problems? What strategies can we devise to exploit our resources most effectively? What is the current state of the scholarly literature for the topic under study?
