These proceedings contain the papers presented at the Third International Conference and Exhibition on Engineering Software held at Imperial College, London during the period April 11th - 13th, 1983. I must thank again the authors who submitted the large numbers of papers which made selection a difficult task. The theme of the conference is the use and application of computers in engineering. Many abbreviations have been invented to describe the use of computers from CAD, CAM, CADMAT etc. but the term which best describes the scope of the conference is Computer Aided Engineering, CAE. The papers have been split into sections covering different application areas such as Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering. Other sections cover techniques such as Finite Elements, Boundary Elements and General Simu lation. An important session at the conference was the new field of engineering databases and as in past conferences the special sessions were devoted to microcomputers. R.A. The application of BEM in all fields of engineering and science has progressed at an accelerate rate since the first book on the method appeared in the late seventies. In particular the advantages of BEM for potential problems are essential to solve a whole range of electrical engineering problems. Previous volumes in this series have focussed on the state of the art in other fields while this volume discusses only problems related to electrical engineering. The book reviews a series of important applications such as the design of semiconductor devices and their thermal analysis. The following two chapters concentrate on the study of galvanic corrosion and cathodic protection. Chapter 4 deals with the design of capacitance transducers. The next three chapters concentrate on the applications of the method to simulate electrochemical problems with special reference to Plating Process. The field of Corrosion Modelling has evolved tremendously since the first work was published in the early 1980's. Its initial application in the offshore industry has expanded to the point where modelling is applied in practically all application areas and the software has been developed to fulfil these needs. This book presents contributions from the most influential researchers and developers of corrosion modelling tools and users who apply the technology in their industry. Providing an excellent introduction to the state-of-the-art in computer modelling of corrosion and related electrochemical processes, this book will be of value to corrosion engineers and physicists, model developers and researchers.
