Eva has set her sights on studying English at Oxford University. Atmospheric old libraries; secret societies; eccentric professors – it’s the stuff of her dreams.

When she and her best friend (who she’s also secretly in love with), George, are invited to Interview Week, it seems like those dreams are coming true.

But only a day in, George is found dead on the steps of a university statue. And it is Eva who finds him.

All eyes are now on her as she races to clear her name, uncover the truth – and take back her future.

Can Journalism Be Saved? - Rediscovering America's Appetite for News (Hardcover, New): Rachel Davis Mersey Can Journalism Be Saved? - Rediscovering America's Appetite for News (Hardcover, New)
Rachel Davis Mersey
R2,047 Discovery Miles 20 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book challenges the once-dominant social responsibility model and argues that a new, "individual-first" paradigm is what will allow journalism to survive in today's crowded media marketplace. By some measures, it would seem that print journalism is dying. Journalism recently suffered one of its worst circulation declines in years: a drop of more than ten percent in the a six month period ending September 30, 2009. The Rocky Mountain News in Denver, CO, closed its doors in 2009-after it dominated the AP awards in 2008, and was lauded for an investigative expose on unfair treatment of former nuclear workers. Even the New York Times and the Washington Post are experiencing financial trouble. But print advertising revenue still trumps online advertising revenue ten-fold. Is there hope yet for traditional journalism? This book reviews the complicated challenge facing journalism, tracing its 19th-century community-oriented origins and documenting the vast expansion of the news business via blogs and other Internet-enabled outlets, user-generated content, and news-like alternatives. The author argues that a radical shift in mindset-striving to meet each individual's demands for what he wants to know-will be necessary to save journalism. Presents a chronological review of the top-down influence model, the timeline of the evolution of the definition of news, and the historical development of social responsibility of the press Contains helpful illustrations of the proposed new models of journalism Bibliography of academic and professional materials related to the state of the news media Index of important institutions including nameplate news organizations, influential companies (e.g., Apple and Google), theoretical frameworks, media owners, and media startups

Mobile Disruptions in the Middle East - Lessons from Qatar and the Arabian Gulf region in mobile media content innovation... Mobile Disruptions in the Middle East - Lessons from Qatar and the Arabian Gulf region in mobile media content innovation (Paperback)
John Pavlik, Everette Dennis, Rachel Davis Mersey, Justin Gengler
R717 Discovery Miles 7 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mobile Disruptions in the Middle East identifies trends in mobile media use in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates and, more broadly, explores their impact on the nature of digital journalism. Mobility has long been an important aspect of life in the Middle East; therefore a study of this region presents a unique opportunity to examine the role of mobile media and its future directions. Basing its analysis on original research, including multiyear surveys and case studies, the book reveals patterns of audience engagement with mobile media in the Gulf area, with particular emphasis on online journalism. The research also illustrates how and to what extent media organizations are developing and delivering content uniquely designed for mobile media and consumption. Drawing on these findings, the authors look at possible developments in mobile media content strategies, including those for news content, as wearable and other emerging media forms enter the marketplace. Mobile Disruptions in the Middle East provides an important insight into a region that is both globally active and mobile-first, yet whose use of digital media is historically under-researched. As a result, the book helps to advance understanding of consumer preference for content types on mobile media, especially in relation to the transformation of journalism.

Suffering and the Christian Life (Hardcover): Rachel Davies Suffering and the Christian Life (Hardcover)
Rachel Davies; Volume editing by Karen Kilby
R3,664 Discovery Miles 36 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume approaches questions concerning the status and meaning of suffering in Christian life and Christian theology through the lens of a variety of theological disciplines - biblical, historical, practical, political and systematic theology. Scholars from this range of fields concentrate on a number of questions: Is love intrinsically linked with suffering? Are suffering and loss on some level fundamentally good? How is - and how should - suffering and diminishment be viewed in the Christian tradition? Featuring leading voices that include Linn Tonstad, Bernard McGinn, Anna Rowlands, John Swinton and Paul Murray, this volume brings together essays touching on concrete issues such as cancer, mental health, and the experience of refugees, and discusses broad themes including vulnerability, kenosis and tragedy. In correlating these themes with the examination of texts ranging from Paul's letters to works of the Cappadocians, Thomas Aquinas, John of the Cross and Mother Teresa, Suffering and the Christian Life offers fresh and accessible academic approaches to a question of vital personal, existential significance.

Mind Like Mine is a stigma-busting collection of biographies of some of the great people from history who have lived with mental health conditions. Did you know Charles Darwin experienced anxiety and Florence Nightingale lived with PTSD? From Michelangelo to Deepika Padukone, Ada Lovelace to Freddie Flintoff, a great many successful people with brilliant minds and talents have lived or are living with mental health disorders. The biographies in this book show that you can't always tell what a person is going through, and that mental health conditions can and do impact people from all walks of life. The aim of this book is to help remove some of the stigma around mental health, discuss different mental health conditions, what they mean and how they are treated; and ultimately to show that mental health disorders do not have to hold anyone back from achieving their dreams. The figures featured are from a range of diverse backgrounds and disciplines across science, literature, art, music, sport, politics and popular culture. Additional feature pages will explain and explore key mental health conditions including depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety and eating disorders.

There was just one problem. Sophie was so good at Maths, people wanted to meet her. Would her cover be blown? Lime Plus/Band 11+ books provide challenging plots and vocabulary as well as opportunities to practise inference, prediction and reading stamina. Pages 46 and 47 allow children to re-visit the content of the book, supporting comprehension skills, vocabulary development and recall. Ideas for reading in the back of the book provide practical support and stimulating activities. Rachael Davis is a mixed-raced children’s author, represented by literary agent Alice Williams. She studied Mathematics at the University of Oxford, where she extensively researched the life and works of Sophie Germain. A few years later, she did a masters in English Literature at the University of Surrey and became a full-time writer. Sophie Germain is a true inspiration to Rachael and it is Rachael’s hope that the story of this tenacious undercover mathematician will continue to inspire generations to come.

More adventures with everyone's favourite time-traveller. In 'Full Circle', it soon becomes clear that all is not well when the Tardis scanner shows the Doctor (Tom Baker), Romana (Lalla Ward) and K9 an image of Gallifrey, only for them to discover an expanse of marshland when they venture outside the ship. The Doctor realizes that they have somehow travelled through a charged Vacuum Emboitment into E-Space where he meets the local Alzarians - themselves preparing to retreat to their damaged spacecraft, the Starliner, in an attempt to escape the lethal Mistfall. In 'State of Decay', when the Doctor, Romana and K9, still trapped in E-Space, land on a medieval planet, they do not realize that Adric has stowed away on the Tardis with them. They are soon in need of his help when they discover that the local society is ruled over by three vampire lords - Zargo (William Lindsay), Camilla (Rachel Davies), and Aukon (Emrys James). Finally, in 'Warrior's Gate', the Doctor may finally be on the verge of escaping E-Space when the Tardis is hijacked by Biroc (David Weston), a time-sensitive Tharil on the run from Captain Rorvik (Clifford Rose) and his crew of privateers. However, when K9 is damaged by the Time Winds, it becomes clear that he will not be able to make the return journey.
