Double bill featuring movies that focus on America's recent involvement in foreign countries. In 'The Kingdom' (2007), when a terrorist bomb detonates inside a Western housing compound in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, an international incident is ignited. While diplomats slowly debate equations of territorialism, FBI Special Agent Ronald Fleury (Jamie Foxx) quickly assembles an elite team and negotiates a secret five-day trip into Saudi Arabia to locate the madman behind the bombing. Upon landing in the desert kingdom, however, Fleury and his team discover Saudi authorities suspicious and unwelcoming of American interlopers into what they consider a local matter. Hamstrung by protocol, and with the clock ticking on their five days, the FBI agents find their expertise worthless without the trust of their Saudi counterparts who want to locate the terrorist in their homeland on their own terms. Fleury's crew finds a like-minded partner in Saudi Police Captain Al-Ghazi (Ashraf Barhom), who helps them navigate royal politics and unlock the secrets of the crime scene and the workings of an extremist, hell bent on further destruction. 'Jarhead' (2006) is an adaptation of former Marine Anthony Swofford's Gulf War memoir. Young recruit Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) joins up with the US Marines (nicknamed 'Jarheads' because of their distinctive haircuts) on the eve of the 1990 Gulf War. After a brutal spell in boot camp, during which Swofford and his fellow recruits are systematically geared up for the conflict, the Marines are dispatched to the deserts of the Persian Gulf to take part in a war that sees them required to do very little in the way of fighting. Bored and frustrated in the middle of nowhere, the young soldiers resort to a macabre sense of humour as they wait for the war to happen to them.

Corporate Finance (Paperback, 13th edition): Stephen Ross, Randolph Westerfield, Jeffrey Jaffe, Bradford Jordan Corporate Finance (Paperback, 13th edition)
Stephen Ross, Randolph Westerfield, Jeffrey Jaffe, Bradford Jordan
R1,907 Discovery Miles 19 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Corporate Finance, by Ross, Westerfield, Jaffe, and Jordan, was written for the corporate finance course at the MBA level and the intermediate course in many undergraduate programs. The text emphasizes the modern fundamentals of the theory of finance while providing contemporary examples to make the theory come to life. The authors aim to present corporate finance as the working of a small number of integrated and powerful intuitions rather than a collection of unrelated topics. They develop the central concepts of modern finance: arbitrage, net present value, efficient markets, agency theory, options, and the trade-off between risk and return, and use them to explain corporate finance with a balance of theory and application. The 13th edition also welcomes a special contributor, Professor Kelly Shue of Yale University.

ISE Essentials of Corporate Finance (Paperback, 11th edition): Stephen Ross, Randolph Westerfield, Bradford Jordan ISE Essentials of Corporate Finance (Paperback, 11th edition)
Stephen Ross, Randolph Westerfield, Bradford Jordan
R1,838 Discovery Miles 18 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Essentials of Corporate Finance focuses on what undergraduate students with widely varying backgrounds need to carry away from a core course in business or corporate finance. The goal is to convey the most important concepts at a level that is approachable for the widest possible audience. Essentials is written in a relaxed, conversational style that invites the students to join in the learning process rather than being a passive information absorber. Essentials has three basic themes as a central focus: An Emphasis on Intuition: We always try to separate and explain the principles at work on a commonsense, intuitive level before launching into any specifics. A Unified Valuation Approach: We treat net present value (NPV) as the basic concept underlying corporate finance. A Managerial Focus: Students shouldn't lose sight of the fact that financial management concerns management. We emphasize the role of the financial manager as decision-maker, and we stress the need for managerial input and judgment.

Public Policy, Productive and Unproductive Entrepreneurship - The Impact of Public Policy on Entrepreneurial Outcomes... Public Policy, Productive and Unproductive Entrepreneurship - The Impact of Public Policy on Entrepreneurial Outcomes (Hardcover)
Gregory M Randolph, Michael T Tasto, Robert F Salvino Jr
R2,872 Discovery Miles 28 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This exciting book provides fresh insight into how institutions, governments, regulations, economic freedom and morality impact entrepreneurship and public policy. Each chapter contains a rigorous analysis of the consequences of public policy and the effects of institutional decisions on the productivity of entrepreneurs. Expert contributors highlight the importance of institutions for economic outcomes while focusing specifically on the impact of public policy. One standout feature is the presentation of concrete examples regarding the role of institutions as well a clear analysis of entrepreneurship research. The editors also examine and compare productive versus unproductive public policies. Some of the conclusions made within this book include: Successful recruitment spending by states creates an incentive for unproductive entrepreneurs to seek economic rents Regulatory measures impact firms in a continuous and evolving fashion Economic actions and morality may converge given certain conditions More economic freedom in a given country is associated with greater levels of entrepreneurship Public Policy, Productive and Unproductive Entrepreneurship will help policymakers direct their efforts at creating a positive economic environment for entrepreneurs to flourish and give scholars a better understanding of the role policy plays in entrepreneurial activity. Its practical application for academic research will be great for students, helping them to connect theoretical economic fundamentals to real and familiar economic outcomes. Contributors include: J. Away from Chaos - The Middle East and the Challenge to the West: Gilles Kepel Away from Chaos - The Middle East and the Challenge to the West
Gilles Kepel; Translated by Henry Randolph
R596 Discovery Miles 5 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Middle East is one of the world’s most volatile regions. In recent years, from the optimism and then crushing disappointment of the Arab uprisings through the rise and fall of the Islamic State, it has presented key international security challenges. With the resilient jihadi terror threat, large-scale migration due to warfare and climate change, and fierce competition for control over oil, it promises to continue to be a powder keg. What ignited this instability? Away from Chaos is a sweeping political history of four decades of Middle East conflict and its worldwide ramifications. Gilles Kepel, called “France’s most famous scholar of Islam” by the New York Times, offers a clear and persuasive narrative of the long-term causes of tension while seamlessly incorporating on-the-ground observations and personal experiences from the people who lived through them. From the Yom Kippur/Ramadan war of 1973 to the aftermath of the Arab Spring, Away from Chaos weaves together the various threads that run through Middle East politics and ties them to their implications on the global stage. With keen insight stemming from decades of experience in the region, Kepel puts these chaotic decades in perspective and illuminates their underlying dynamics. He also considers the prospects of emerging from this long-lasting turmoil and for the people of the Middle East and the world to achieve a more stable future.

"Magisterial and glorious" (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette), the first full authoritative biography of Dorothy Day--American icon, radical pacifist, Catholic convert, and advocate for the homeless--is "a vivid account of her political and religious development" (Karen Armstrong, The New York Times). After growing up in a conservative middle-class Republican household and working several years as a left-wing journalist, Dorothy Day converted to Catholicism and became an anomaly in American life for the next fifty years. As an orthodox Catholic, political radical, and a rebel who courted controversy, she attracted three generations of admirers. A believer in civil disobedience, Day went to jail several times protesting the nuclear arms race. She was critical of capitalism and US foreign policy, and as skeptical of modern liberalism as political conservatism. Her protests began in 1917, leading to her arrest during the suffrage demonstration outside President Wilson's White House. In 1940 she spoke in Congress against the draft and urged young men not to register. She told audiences in 1962 that the US was as much to blame for the Cuban missile crisis as Cuba and the USSR. She refused to hear any criticism of the pope, though she sparred with American bishops and priests who lived in well-appointed rectories while tolerating racial segregation in their parishes. Dorothy Day is the exceptional biography of a dedicated modern-day pacifist, an outspoken advocate for the poor, and a lifelong anarchist. This definitive and insightful account is "a monumental exploration of the life, legacy, and spirituality of the Catholic activist" (Spirituality & Practice).

Offshore Geotechnical Engineering - Mark Randolph and Susan Gourvenec (Hardcover): Mark Randolph, Susan Gourvenec Offshore Geotechnical Engineering - Mark Randolph and Susan Gourvenec (Hardcover)
Mark Randolph, Susan Gourvenec
R6,436 Discovery Miles 64 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Design practice in offshore geotechnical engineering has grown out of onshore practice, but the two application areas have tended to diverge over the last thirty years, driven partly by the scale of the foundation and anchoring elements used offshore, and partly by fundamental differences in construction and installation techniques. As a consequence offshore geotechnical engineering has grown as a speciality. The structure of Offshore Geotechnical Engineering follows a pattern that mimics the flow of a typical offshore project. In the early chapters it provides a brief overview of the marine environment, offshore site investigation techniques and interpretation of soil behaviour. It proceeds to cover geotechnical design of piled foundations, shallow foundations and anchoring systems. Three topics are then covered which require a more multi-disciplinary approach: the design of mobile drilling rigs, pipelines and geohazards. This book serves as a framework for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and will appeal to professional engineers specialising in the offshore industry.

Piling Engineering (Hardcover, 3rd edition): Ken Fleming, Austin Weltman, Mark Randolph, Keith Elson Piling Engineering (Hardcover, 3rd edition)
Ken Fleming, Austin Weltman, Mark Randolph, Keith Elson
R5,364 Discovery Miles 53 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Piling is a fast moving field and recent years have seen major advances in theory, methods, testing procedures and equipment. Some of these changes have been driven by the need for economies and efficiency, reduced spoil production and new methods of pile bore support. Advances in theoretical analyses allow pile design to be refined so that piles and pile groups perform to better advantage.

This third edition of the well established book has been comprehensively updated. It provides an accessible and well-illustrated account of design techniques, methods of testing and analysis of piles, with a marked emphasis on practice but with design methods that incorporate the most recent advances in piling theory.

Piling Engineering is written for geotechnical engineers, consultants and foundation contractors. It is also a useful reference for academics and advanced students on courses in piling, practical site investigation and foundation design and construction.

Phytochemicals - Nutrient-Gene Interactions (Hardcover): Mark S. Meskin, Wayne R Bidlack, R. Keith Randolph Phytochemicals - Nutrient-Gene Interactions (Hardcover)
Mark S. Meskin, Wayne R Bidlack, R. Keith Randolph
R5,640 Discovery Miles 56 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Understanding phytochemical-gene interactions provides the basis for individualized therapies to promote health as well as prevent and treat disease. The authors of Phytochemicals: Nutrient-Gene Interactions examine the interactions between phytochemicals and the human genome and discuss the impact these interactions have on health, aging, and chronic conditions such as inflammation, heart disease, obesity, type II diabetes mellitus, and cancer.

Keeping pace with the most important trends in phytochemical research, the authors accentuate the latest understanding on the use of controlled clinical trials, new screening technologies, and the completed human genome project for researching the pharmacokinetics, safety, and efficacy of phytochemicals. The book covers a balanced range of topics beginning with experimental strategies and methodologies for identifying significant interactions between diet, genetic variants, and different markers of cardiovascular disease, inflammation, and obesity. Different authors explain the mechanisms of protective action that link diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids, unsaturated fats, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains with a decreased risk of chronic and degenerative diseases. They also review and summarize epidemiological research on plant-based foods and dietary patterns supporting the beneficial role of phytochemicals in health promotion and disease prevention.

Phytochemicals: Nutrient-Gene Interactions illustrates the growing role of nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics in disease prevention and in the responsible development of safe and effective phytochemical products within the food, pharmaceutical, and supplement industries.

Adult Crying - A Biopsychosocial Approach (Hardcover): Ad J.J.M. Vingerhoets, Randolph R. Cornelius Adult Crying - A Biopsychosocial Approach (Hardcover)
Ad J.J.M. Vingerhoets, Randolph R. Cornelius
R3,563 Discovery Miles 35 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Crying is a typical human expression of emotion. Surprisingly, until now little scientific attention has been devoted to this phenomenon. Many textbooks on emotion fail to pay attention to it, and in scientific journals there are hardly any contributions focusing on this behavior. In contrast, there is much interest from the lay public, allowing pseudo-scientists to formulate theories that have little or no scientific basis. Is there any evidence in support of statements that crying is healthy or that not crying may result in toxification? How do people react to the crying of others? Is crying important for the diagnosis of depression, and if so, how? This book aims to fill this gap in scientific literature. Crying is discussed from several perspectives and specific attention is given to methodological issues and assessment. Each chapter provides a review and a summary of the relevant scientific literature.

Proust's Recherche - A Psychoanalytic Interpretation: Randolph Splitter Proust's Recherche - A Psychoanalytic Interpretation
Randolph Splitter
R2,531 Discovery Miles 25 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1981 and now reissued with a new preface by Randolph Splitter, this volume examines Proust’s novel A la recherche du temps perdu from a psychoanalytic viewpoint, showing that Marcel, the central character, like the novel itself, is characterized by an unstable equilibrium of opposing forces, so that he wishes both to dissolve the boundaries between inner and outer worlds, and to maintain divisions and defenses. Instead of trying to force the text into a rigid theoretical structure this reading of Proust’s novel illuminates it by confronting and re-examining the problems that Freudian theory itself addresses. In considering these problems, the author also takes into account the findings of modern French psychoanalysis and literary criticism, referring particularly to the work of Jacques Lacan and Jacques Derrida.
